Hoy voy a escribir sobre la ópera prima (como director cinematográfico) del novelista, guionista, productor y director británico Alex Garland, la cual le valió entre otras la nominación en la categoría de mejor guion original, tanto en los premios BAFTA como en los Óscars, estoy hablando de la película Ex-Máquina. Desde mi punto de vista, se trata de una verdadera joya de la ciencia ficción más reflexiva y sobria, posee una considerable dosis de suspenso y algunos toques de drama, que le confieren una identidad particular, lo cual en lo personal me hace colocarla entre mis favoritas en lo que respecta a producciones de bajo presupuesto, que por supuesto, no pretenden alcanzar el estatus de Blockbuster. No se me mal interprete por favor, no estoy diciendo que sea una obra maestra del cine en general, solo que en su nicho es bastante destacable; sé que no es para todos los gustos, algunos la consideran pretenciosa, simple y predecible, además a quienes están acostumbrados a los finales idílicos de Hollywood, puede no agradarles su conclusión, pero es precisamente su premisa concreta y desenlace inusual lo que la hacen especial.
Este largometraje recibió críticas en su gran mayoría favorables por parte de la prensa especializada, mientras que el público que se animó a verla también le concedió una buena calificación, ejemplo de ello es que en el sitio web Rotten Tomatoes, tiene un 92% de reseñas positivas y 86% en cuanto a la puntuación de la audiencia. La taquilla por su parte, fue buena si tomamos en cuenta que en su desarrollo se empleó un presupuesto de 15 millones de dólares estadounidenses y consiguió una recaudación que superó ampliamente los 36 millones, fue entonces un modesto éxito comercial. Anuqué anteriormente solo mencioné la nominación de su guion a los premios BAFTA y Óscar, su mayor galardón lo obtuvieron sus efectos visuales al conseguir el Óscar en el año 2016. Aunque no se trata de una cinta espectacular con extravagantes efectos especiales, sí que se realizó un muy buen trabajo visual para dotar de realismo al ginoide (androide femenino) en torno al cual gira la historia.
El nombre de la película hace referencia a la expresión “Deus Ex Machina” que proviene del latín y que se traduce como “El Dios de la maquina”. En este caso, la frase a la que se le ha extraído la palabra “Deus”, hace alusión a un hombre que crea una maquina y de cierto modo juega a ser Dios al dotarla de conciencia sobre su propia existencia. Por otro lado, el titulo da a entender que esta inteligencia artificial ya no es únicamente una máquina, pues al poseer un razonamiento elevado y conciencia de sí misma, aunque no sea un ser humano, podría estar ajustándose al concepto filosófico de persona.

Entorno a esos tres protagonistas, existen escasos personajes secundarios, los cuales tienen intervenciones muy breves y una relevancia casi nula en la trama, la que posee más tiempo en pantalla e importancia en la historia es la japonesa nacionalizada británica Sonoya Mizuno, que representa a una robot quizá menos avanzada que AVA llamada Kyoko.
Argumento
Todo inicia cuando Caleb Smith, un programador que trabaja en el desarrollo de Bluebook, el motor de búsquedas de internet más utilizado del mundo (equivalente a Google), resulta ganador de un concurso interno de la empresa, en el que el premio es conocer personalmente al presidente ejecutivo de la compañía, Nathan Bateman, y compartir con él durante una semana entera en el centro de investigaciones privado de su propiedad, que a la vez es su domicilio. Las instalaciones a las que es llevado Caleb luego de un largo viaje en helicóptero, se encuentran en un lugar apartado de la civilización y de difícil acceso en las montañas de Alaska, además para poder ingresar a la edificación se requiere ser autorizado por un sistema autónomo que controla la entrada, el cual en caso de aprobar el ingreso al complejo, emite una tarjeta que le permite a su portador abrir las puertas de los espacios a los que le haya sido permitido el ingreso.
Dentro del recinto consigue a Bateman, que se encuentra realizando ejercicios físicos y al conocerlo le pide que se relaje y no lo trate como a su jefe, sino como a un igual. Primeramente, mencionare el apartado visual, creo que la fotografía es correcta, no diría que extraordinaria, pero si está bien su estética minimalista, quizá la intención fue mostrar un ambiente que genere cierta tensión y para eso era necesario esa atmosfera fría, pero creo que pudo tener mejores juegos de luces, eso si la disposición de las escenas me parece excelente. Que decir de los efectos especiales, imagino que será suficiente con comentar que una de las competidoras a las que les gano el premio Óscar en este renglón fue Star Wars: Episodio VII - El despertar de la Fuerza, ya eso debe ser bastante para hacerse una idea de su calidad, lo que si debo acotar es que no se trata de efectos extravagantes, son solo los necesarios para lo que pretende transmitir la narración.
La música creo que en términos generales es correcta y acorde con el efecto que busca causar en quien la escucha. Algunos temas me parecen geniales, mientras que otros los encuentro algo estridentes, aunque estoy consciente de que su propósito es precisamente ese, ser incomodos de escuchar. Esta banda sonora está a cargo de los artistas británicos Ben Salisbury y Geoff Barrow.
En cuanto a las actuaciones de los protagonistas, son todas de primer nivel, quizá el grado de exigencia no sea el más alto, pero sí que cada uno de ellos interpreta perfectamente su rol, dándole a su respectivo personaje la tridimensionalidad requerida, lo cual en una obra que se centra tan concretamente centrada en sus personajes, resulta ser indispensable para poder atrapar a la audiencia. En espacial el papel de la actriz Alicia Vikander, que tiene la tarea de dotar a la androide AVA con la empatía que trasmitiría cualquier ser humano que se encuentre privado de su libertad contra su voluntad y con el añadido de ser tratado como un ser inferior, que no posee ningún tipo de derechos.
El tema de la inteligencia artificial ha sido tratado recurrentemente en diferentes propuestas cinematográficas con mayor y menor profundidad, sin embargo, creo que la grandeza de este largometraje radica en la forma realista y minimalista que emplea para abordar argumentos filosóficos interesantes y complejos como lo son los alcances de la inteligencia artificial, el concepto de persona, las consecuencias de la arrogancia humana y el egoísmo intrínseco a la autopercepción y el razonamiento. La cinta se enfoca en contar una historia lineal y básica, con muy pocos ingredientes que hagan enrevesada la argumentación y difuminen los dilemas morales que se derivan de tal planteamiento, para lo cual hace uso de un lenguaje narrativo que juega con las sensaciones de la audiencia, generando intriga, desconfianza y a la vez sugestionando las expectativas del público para confundirlo.

Por lo tanto, tengo la sensación de que el director de esta película logro hacer un gran trabajo con pocos recursos y no me refiero únicamente a los recursos económicos, sino también a la historia en sí misma, ya que, siendo tan austera en número de personajes, locaciones, acontecimientos y revelaciones, resulta un verdadero reto que no se sienta demasiado aburrida. De hecho, para una buena parte del público esa será la persecución que produzca, ya que la argumentación se sustenta en los diálogos, que desde mi punto de vista son muy buenos, pero que puede volver tediosa y pesada su visualización, además tiene un ritmo lento, que quizá pudo haberse acelerado un poco con el corte de algunas escenas que hacen uso de vacíos narrativos.
Sin duda esta propuesta tiene sus problemas, como lo que acabo de mencionar sobre su ritmo, también hay algunas situaciones que presentan cierta inconsistencia lógica, pero se trata de elementos menores que para nada menoscaban su nivel general, al menos desde mi perspectiva, que es precisamente la de un fanático de la ciencia ficción más apegada a los avances tecnológicos del mundo real.
