This was recently added to Netflix but it isn't a new film. Made in 2013 it sees the unlikely coupling of Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg in an action comedy that works pretty well. I had my doubts that the two of them would have on-screen chemistry but overall I would say that they really do.
MILD SPOILERS AHEAD
At the start we are introduced to our main characters Bobby (Denzel) and Michael (Wahlberg) as they enter a diner across the street from a bank near the border to Mexico. The opening sequence is quick and the action gets started immediately as they intentionally burn down the restaurant. I was curious as to why they did that but it becomes evident later that they needed to eliminate the witnesses that might exist for when they later rob the bank.
Later on they end up double crossing one another after the heist, which we kind of expect based on what kind of movie this is, but the double-cross doesn't happen the way that I expected. In that way the film kind of steps away from being completely predictable like so many of the other films like it.
In a similar fashion to other action films like this, the methods and tactics that our heroes use are for the most part impossible, but not only do they always succeed but they have incredible confidence that they WILL succeed and therefore approach most of their tactics with a suave arrogance.
Examples of this include successfully staking out locations in a classic muscle car that would definitely get noticed, raiding a Navy base by charging the front gate, and hitting the pilot of a passing military helicopter using a handgun. Since it is meant to be an exaggerated action flick anyway, this should be expected of course.
The film's story isn't really anything special but seeing these two acting legends together in the same film and as far as I know it is the only time this has ever happened. It isn't a full on comedy, it isn't a full on action film, to be honest I don't think it is too much of either one of those things. It's just fun.
[src](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK6EbfdnTHg)The film made a decent profit at the box office and was considered a success. While the professional critics were split on whether or not this film could be considered good or not, the overall public opinion is that the movie was slightly above average as it currently has a 64% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
I agree with this. It isn't great, but it is worth watching. Just don't expect any sort of Oscar-winning performances.
