Friends: Still one of the best comedies to watch

Review by @netflixr · 2089d · of Friends

I haven't been terribly happy with most series have been released in the past couple of decades. Even Big Bang Theory kind of fell apart for me after the first 3 seasons or so. In my opinion, a great deal many of the shows that Netflix has introduced us to over the years, especially their originals, lack in any sort of meaningful entertainment value for the most part and this is before we start to focus on the fact that whoever is in charge over at Netflix seems to feel it is their duty to throw some sort of political or social message into every series rather than just trying to entertain.

There are a few shows out there that I think are timeless, especially as far as sitcoms are concerned and for me, Friends is still at the top of that list.

There were rumors last year and in the beginning of 2020 that the beloved Warner Brothers comedy was going to leave Netflix in order to stream exclusively on a WB service of their own but this idea was squashed when a ton of money was offered to keep in on Netflix.

I don't know the details of how much longer Friends will remain on Netflix but for now, it is still there in its entirety.

I have seen every single episode of this show multiple times but I can always return to it and it remains funny. The writing and characters are just absolutely perfect as are the actors that are involved in the show.

Last night I chose an episode at random and it was the "Holiday Armadillo" one and that is just loaded with great laughs and I loved it... but then something happened that doesn't happen to me very often with Netflix or things on a screen in general: I watched 2.5 hours more of the show and the next thing I knew it was 3 in the morning. I didn't want to stop watching but I was also not interested in staying up all night so I went to bed.

This simply doesn't happen to me with literally anything else I watch except for maybe Family Guy and if I had to choose between those two shows I would choose Friends, hands down.

The funny thing about the way I feel about this show is that when it first was released back in the early 90's I didn't care about it at all. I actually didn't watch any of the episodes until it had already been released for over a year. Since that time I have purchased a box set of DVD's twice (first set was destroyed by a child) and any time I was flipping channels somewhere prior to streaming services existing, if Friends was on, there was a very good chance I was going to watch it.

I don't believe that there are many other shows, comedy or otherwise, that are as perfectly made as Friends is and when you start to hear stories of Netflix paying $100 million in order to continue having the show you have to imagine that there are probably not very many other shows, especially a show that hasn't had a new episode in 16 years, that is worth anywhere near that much cash. I suppose Game of Thrones probably would be but I can't think of many others.

I have yet to meet a single person who doesn't like this show and if you are one of the very rare people that thinks that it isn't a fantastic show I would imagine that we probably wouldn't see eye-to-eye on a great many things. IMDB has it ranked as the number 2 sitcom of all time but I don't understand how they came to that conclusion since it has many more votes, and a higher star rating than the only show ranked above it.

So do you love Friends as much as I do? I feel as though this show will never get old to me and even though the costumes and overall looks are a bit dated it also has the added benefit of being a bit of a time-capsule and a reminder that everyone used way too much hair gel in the 90s. I know i did.

This is still a regular thing played on my Netflix rotation. I almost certain that there are zero episodes that i have not seen but yet I still enjoy them.
