Reality Z on Netflix - just another typical zombie series

Review by @netflixr ⭐ 🏆#186 🎵9 🎬300 📺171 · 2308d · of Reality Z

Just in case you haven't yet gotten tired of this really overused concept for a show or movie, Netflix just dropped a new zombie-apocalypse series that takes place in Brazil.

If you have read any of my reviews of zombie oriented stuff in the past you already know that I am not a fan of this genre because of one simple thing: It has been done waaaaaaaaaay too much. If someone were to have an even somewhat original take on the concept, such as they did in 28 Days Later I might be willing to watch it and perhaps enjoy it (I did actually enjoy both "28" films,) but that is not what is happening in Reality Z.

The show is basically a near exact copy of The Walking Dead only with obviously less production money and it is in Portuguese.

I'm speculating here but I think the show is called Reality Z because of the fact that before the zombies come into play, and the come into play very very early on, the series appears to be about the production of a bizarre reality TV show based on the gods of Mount Olympus where a person is voted out of the house each week similar in style to that awful show Big Brother but with ancient Greek costumes.

This is actually one of the only interesting parts of the show because as the zombie's take over Rio, the contestants on the show are briefly completely unaware that it is happening even as everyone in the production studio they are surrounded by are killed off.

Once we meet the zombies they are exactly like every other zombie that we have seen time and time again in films and television, but maybe just a bit faster. They are compelled to attack any non-zombie but yet never cause any harm to one another, they are incapable of climbing anything or opening doors or latches on fences, and can only be killed by striking them in the head.

Of course their heads have the tensile strength of a half-cooked egg because anyone with a pair of scissors penetrates the skull with relative ease.

The societal aspect of the film where rather than teaming together to fight a common enemy the few capable humans instead battle one another for power would probably be interesting if it hadn't already been done to death by AMC's The Walking Dead, but because this is basically just a copy of what we have already seen there, this is also boring.

have fun with that, it's in Portuguese

I will admit that I did not watch all the episodes; I only watches 3 of them and 1 of those I was doing something else while it was going on. I can't stay focused on something this unoriginal for very long.

The main thing I found entertaining and funny wasn't even intentional and took place inside of the subtitles when they would explain what was going on for the hearing impaired audience. The words “wet squelching” appear on the screen quite frequently and at one point we see the words “passes gas wetly”, unironically, on the subtitles track.

Should I watch it?

Other than to verify that everything I have said above is true and perhaps get a giggle at the funny subtitles I would say definitely not. The episodes are only 30 minutes long and I suppose that is a plus but honestly - we need to give the zombie genre a bit of a rest.

I don't mean to be lazy, but whenever I see that a series or movie has subtitles, i am very unlikely to watch it. I tried watching one that was overdubbed and that was even worse. I may check this out for a bit just to see the funny subtitles though.
