This is the 3rd time that I have tried to watch this film since it was added to the Netflix library a while ago. While I can understand the appeal that a re-re-launch of the franchise might have for some people, the overly teenage aspects of Spider-Man doesn't really appeal to me. That being said, the CGI is done pretty well even though the story is a little thin when you consider certain aspects of what is going on here.
This takes place after Endgame and a big part of what is going on is a continuation of the relationship that Tony Stark and Peter Parker had developed in primarily the last 2 Avengers films.
The villain is introduced as "Mysterio" played pretty nicely by Jake Gyllenhaal. He is a super-hero with no superpowers and relies on technology to dupe the public into believing that he actually is a superhero by fighting CGI enemies that aren't actually there.
This is something that once it was revealed to me I had a hard time getting on board with. The environment that these fake enemies interact with actually does get destroyed and we are supposed to believe that Mysterio and his team were somehow able to rig up elaborate explosives and what not in order to dupe the entire public into believing that the battle actually did happen. This becomes more problematic when Spider-Man is involved in the scenes as well because the enemies aren't actually there yet he strikes at them and uses web stuff on them.... if they aren't really there then how does he interact with them? It doesn't make sense when you think about it.
Also Nick Fury, a character I have never cared for, seems to always know everything that is going on at all times yet he doesn't figure any of this out either.
Once Mysterio manages to get the actual technology to make his simulations interactive via Tony Starks technology the story makes considerably more sense but it is the lead in to that becoming possible that I have a big problem with.
If you can get past all this or simply accept it the film is still reasonably entertaining because the battles and CGI are really top notch. Most of the characters are great as well but Peter's fat confidant kind of gets on my nerves throughout the 90 minutes or so. I guess he is meant to be comic relief, but I simply don't find him funny at all.
Designed to rope in the vary valuable teenage demographic, this PG-13 film accomplished precisely that when it pulled in over a billion dollars on a budget of under $200 million.
I suppose I can recommend this for some people, certainly for kids because it is rather tame and has no swearing or things that will make children have nightmares aside from maybe the fire elemental - which gets vanquished anyway. I wouldn't watch it again and have kind of a low opinion of it but I am not the target audience for this film.
I'm not going to rate the film because for me it seems to fall in line with a vast majority of the predictable Marvel films - and this is something I am tired of. For people who don't mind that sort of thing I say, jump on in.
