Stay Close (series): It looks promising but takes a really long time to get moving

Review by @netflixr · 1609d · of Stay Close

I'm not a big fan of most of the series on Neflix. Aside from a few gems here and there I think that a vast majority of them are garbage and this is especially true with most of the comedies that aren't funny. When I saw the trailer for Stay Close I thought it looked promising and that is especially because of the fact that it was a "limited series."

I could be wrong about this but when I see the worlds "limited series" it says to me that the story that is being told is a one off and is not meant to be something that just carries on forever. It also means that it wasn't designed for network television and therefore they aren't held to some sort of format with forced commercial breaks nor are they obligated to make a certain number of episodes even if they don't have a real story. This is a real problem with a lot of other series that are forced by certain networks to have 12 or 20 or some other amount of episodes in order to fill up a season determined by the network. Netflix isn't as bad about this as other streaming services but they are still pretty bad because a lot of the series that they get a hold of are actually throwaways from networks.

The show is a drama / thriller/ crime sort of hybrid and it mostly focuses on three people especially a woman who has a past that she is hiding from her apparently perfect family. I'm 3 episodes in and it appears as though it is some sort of serial killer drama thus far, although this is where I start to have problems with the series.

It is entertaining, but there is so much going on and it takes so long for the to get to the point that it is easy to get lost in the maze of characters.

Mostly it focuses on Megan Pierce, who definitely has something to hide that even her family is not aware of including her husband and children but after 3 episodes that hasn't fully unraveled. I honestly, after 3 episodes don't really have much of an idea as to what is going on, just that someone got killed 17 years ago, presumably by Megan or someone she knows, and now that person is back somehow.

I feel as though this show could be good for someone that has the patience to wait it out and maybe once the pieces come together it will be amazing, for me though, this process is taking too long and I don't think I will even make it through the whole thing to find out what that is. I would definitely put this show into the "slow burn" category because entire episodes will pass with very little happening other than dialogue and flashbacks that they use over and over and this is a little frustrating to me.

Should I watch it?

At this point I can only suggest this to people that don't have a low attention span like I do. I have very little patience when it comes to these sorts of things even when it appears as though it is heading towards a big reveal later on that will probably be pretty shocking and awesome. I think it is a bit much to ask of people to wait 5-7 hours to have the pieces of the puzzle come together but for others, maybe they enjoy this sort of mystery and intrigue.

It looks like it could be good for the right person, I just don't know if that person is me or not.
