If you think feminism destroys societal values, the women in BRIMSTONE will definitely stone you for that belief. Martin Koolhoven, a Dutch director has revealed the state of women without feminism in the old West. He has made me appreciate the beauty in feminism and I'm happy to be born in this Century. This film is a Dutch western version of the domestic horror women were subjected to in the 19th century, not because they are helpless but because they are regarded as second class citizens. They do not dare speak up, if they do, they are subjected to all types of inhuman treatments such as tongue cutting, whips etc enforced by their men. Koolhoven tells the story backwards and in 4 parts (Revelation, Exodus, Genesis and Retribution), with each part revealing the mystery of the former. 
The movie starts with a frontier woman, Liz (Dakota Fanning) who lives in a farm with her husband, daughter and stepson, she is mute and communicates through sign language. All seems to go well until the a new Reverend(Guy Pearce) arrives with his Amish beard, dutch accent, a cut on his neck and a scar on his face, Liz is terrified as she hears his voice. He gives a horrorful sermon about hell, of course it looked like he dined with the devil and claims he is there to punish Liz when he finally meets her and he did just that as she fights to protect her family.

As we began to wonder the relationship between the reverend and the mute lady, Koolhoven unravels the answers, revealing each character in detail in each part. It is ironical that the Reverend whose first words are "beware of false prophets, they come to you in sheep's clothing but in within they are raven wolves" it's a false prophet himself, in fact a preacher from hell whom loves to whip the women around him to keep them under his control. He seem to have biblical verses to back up his wickedness as he is seen to use the story of Lot and his daughters as a yardstick to commit incest.
He gets anything he wants and destroys anything that threatens to stop him. He is indeed a wolf, only this time he is not in sheep's clothing.
Liz on the other hand is a strong and industrious woman,she is a protagonist, she is stronger than what she has been through and she hasn't always been mute. But the past always catch up with her and every one who cared for her seems to die.

Brimstone's classy cast makes it entertaining to watch. Canning's performance as Liz doesn't look like as easy task but she pulled it of. She reveals her thought and emotions through her face and eyes but Pearce steals the show with his performance as Reverend. He looked like a real villain, his stiffness and horrifying looks, filling each scene with chills.
This is a mystery movie and it lived up to it's name. While the classy cast which entails a luxurious production, epic settings, cool plot and mystery will keep you glued to the screen for over 2hrs, the unsettling scenes will scare you away and you need to have a tough stomach to watch. For example the scene where a 5 year old girl was whipped on her bare back didn't settle well with me. I kept wincing with each stroke. Though it's long, running over 2 hours, its never boring, Koolhoven has a way of keeping the audience engaged but it's violence and inhuman messages makes it tough to watch. next time you wonder why feminism is the order of the day, go and watch Brimstone.
