When the pandemic hit, many films relating to stories similar to what had happened in reality were on the rise, although they really were not new types of films and they surely had been in the film industry prior to the one in 2020. You'll find some pertaining to aliens, others to zombies, and others to global hysteria, all of which would always revolve around some fundamental cause like a virus or phenomenal anomaly. Yet another is the Korean film "#Alive."
Despite how popular Korean films are around here, I still never find myself drawn to them, and this is solely for the reason that films that are not in native English usually do not pique my interest. And for this reason too, I never give in to the hype around them, especially for films like Alchemy of Souls. But I am being intentional about exploring them, but I just could not jump into a series, so I went with suggestions from friends and started with #Alive - since thriller is one of my favourite genres.
𝔸𝔹𝕆𝕌𝕋 𝕋ℍ𝔼 𝕄𝕆𝕍𝕀𝔼
Joon-woo, a video game streamer, is all alone in his family's apartment in a complex with his mother and sister out for grocies when he gets the news that there is an outbreak of a virus that turns people into zombies. The virus engulfs the city, leaving Joon-woo trapped in his apartment with no means of escape.
As the situation becomes worse by the minute, Joon-woo must learn to survive on his own, using his wits and limited resources to stay alive while he waits for rescue. He meets a neighbor, another survor, who is also trapped in her own apartment and they form a connection. Together, they try to find a way out of the city.
As the virus spreads and the number of zombies continues to grow, Joon-woo and his neighbor face increasing danger and uncertainty. And with each passing moment, their chances of survival become slimmer, and they must fight for their lives as they confront the horrors of the zombie apocalypse.
𝕄𝕐 𝕋ℍ𝕆𝕌𝔾ℍ𝕋𝕊 & 𝕆ℙ𝕀ℕ𝕀𝕆ℕ
Considering that this film was a story about zombies, and that there are a plethora of zombie films all having similar storylines, I expected this film to be yet another one with the cliche zombie story. But when the story started, it wasn't exactly how I had pictured it.
For a long time after the film had started, I felt zero enthusiasm as the film started so fast-paced, and not long after, the whole energy seemed to die down as it was there were not many elements that seemed intruiging. And this was the vibe I got for a long time in the film until the introduction of the other protragonist, the neighbor.
#Alive is one of those zombie films that we'd see a lot of gory scenes for virtually every part of the film. And for some reason, I found some parts of it to be comical as that seemed to be deliberate with the personality of the main character...
sᴛᴏʀʏʟɪɴᴇ
Thriller films are themed with suspense and excitement—thrills, basically—and therefore require efficient development of the story as the thrills to be delivered heavily depend on them. However, for this film, I felt as though the whole point of the film was rushed too early, and the development felt vague.
In just a minute or two, the cause of the outbreak was given—and even done so ineffectively—which gave the film a very shallow depth, making me feel unenthusiastic about what would follow. This also goes to the backgrounds of the characters, the main character in particular.
I believe one of the things that makes stories in thriller films "speak volume" is the background story of the main character(s). I could barely deduce the personality of the main character for a long while, which made the film seem lacking for a long time until, well, the introduction of the second protagonist.
It wasn't until about halfway through the film that I began to feel drawn to the story of the film. That's when I became curious about what was going to happen next and how the entire story would play out. And indeed, I did begin to really like the film from there. There were funny dialogues between the two main characters. Prior to that, I only tagged along because I hoped for the film.
ᴄɪɴᴇᴍᴀᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜʏ
I had hope for the film primarily because its presentation was one that I found really appealing. I couldn't help but adore the attention to the way the environment were set and the way they appeared. Although there weren't so many places in the film, they made do with the few environments and I liked that. The angles with the camera, the lighting for certain scenes, and the brilliant solor schemes were majorly things I admired about the film.
If it had not been for this part that I really like about the film, I might have very well skipped the film as a lot of part didn't interest me that much.
ᴀᴄᴛɪɴɢ
There weren't many "sane" characters in this film, and so therefore, the ones on which I could focus needed to be excellent as they were the ones to actually drive the film.
The main character is one that requires a lot of expressiveness, especially to deliver the comic relief for the film. I found the actor for this role to have done really well in this regard. As a matter of fact, if it had not been for the storyline in the beginning, he could have endeared himself to me earlier on.
On the other hand, the other protagonist, the neighbor, was a character that I instantly liked. The actress sold her character right from the first time I met her, maybe because of her character, and her introduction was what started to bring drive to the film for me.
𝕄𝕐 𝔽𝕀ℕ𝔸𝕃 𝕋ℍ𝕆𝕌𝔾ℍ𝕋𝕊...
Alive might not have been the best Korean film for me to have started it, yet it managed to keep me entertained for the most of it. It may have done a little better for me if it didn't kind of "stall" for most of the beginning and if the story had more depth. However, it still did alright for me.
It may be owing to the fact that I'm usually not drawn to films that aren't in native English, but nonetheless, I feel more interested in seeing more Korean films. I might as well explore different genres now, and I'll see where that goes. This one may not fall into my recommendations, though.

Cuando se produjo la pandemia, surgieron muchas películas relacionadas con historias similares a lo que había ocurrido en la realidad, aunque realmente no eran tipos de películas nuevas y seguramente ya existían en la industria cinematográfica con anterioridad a la de 2020. Encontrarás algunas relacionadas con extraterrestres, otras con zombis y otras con la histeria global, todas ellas girando siempre en torno a alguna causa fundamental como un virus o una anomalía fenomenal. Otra es la película coreana "#Alive".
A pesar de lo populares que son las películas coreanas por aquí, nunca me siento atraído por ellas, y esto es únicamente por la razón de que las películas que no son en inglés nativo no suelen despertar mi interés. Por eso tampoco me dejo llevar por el bombo y platillo que se les da, especialmente a películas como Alchemy of Souls. Sin embargo, me he propuesto explorarlas, pero no podía lanzarme a una serie, así que seguí las sugerencias de mis amigos y empecé con #Alive, ya que el thriller es uno de mis géneros favoritos.

Teniendo en cuenta que se trata de una historia de zombis, y que hay una plétora de películas de zombis con argumentos similares, esperaba que esta película fuera otra más con la historia cliché de los zombis. Pero cuando empezó la historia, no era exactamente como me la había imaginado.
Durante un buen rato después de que empezara la película, no sentí nada de entusiasmo, ya que la película empezó muy rápido y, poco después, toda la energía pareció decaer, ya que no había muchos elementos que me parecieran intrigantes. Y esta fue la sensación que tuve durante mucho tiempo en la película hasta la introducción del otro protragonista, el vecino.
#Alive es una de esas películas de zombis en las que vemos un montón de escenas sangrientas durante prácticamente toda la película. Y por alguna razón, algunas partes me parecieron cómicas ya que eso parecía deliberado con la personalidad del personaje principal....
ʜɪsᴛᴏʀɪᴀ
Las películas de suspense se basan en el suspense y la emoción, básicamente, y, por lo tanto, requieren un desarrollo eficaz de la historia, ya que la emoción depende en gran medida de ello. Sin embargo, en esta película, me dio la impresión de que todo el argumento se precipitaba demasiado pronto, y el desarrollo resultaba vago.
En apenas uno o dos minutos se da la causa del brote, y se hace de forma ineficaz, lo que da a la película una profundidad muy superficial y me hace sentir poco entusiasmado con lo que sigue. Esto también se aplica al trasfondo de los personajes, en particular del protagonista.
Creo que una de las cosas que hace que las historias de las películas de suspense "hablen por sí solas" es la historia de fondo del personaje o personajes principales. Apenas pude deducir la personalidad del protagonista durante un buen rato, lo que hizo que la película me pareciera carente durante mucho tiempo hasta, bueno, la introducción del segundo protagonista.
No fue hasta más o menos la mitad de la película cuando empecé a sentirme atraído por la historia de la película. Fue entonces cuando empecé a sentir curiosidad por lo que iba a ocurrir a continuación y por cómo se desarrollaría toda la historia. Y, efectivamente, la película empezó a gustarme de verdad a partir de ahí. Había diálogos divertidos entre los dos personajes principales. Antes de eso, sólo seguía la película porque tenía esperanzas en ella.
ᴄɪɴᴇᴍᴀᴛᴏɢʀᴀғɪ́ᴀ
Tenía esperanzas en la película sobre todo porque su presentación me pareció realmente atractiva. No pude evitar adorar la atención que se prestó a la ambientación y a la forma en que aparecían los entornos. Aunque no había tantos lugares en la película, se las arreglaron con los pocos entornos y eso me gustó. Los ángulos de la cámara, la iluminación de ciertas escenas y los brillantes esquemas de color fueron los aspectos que más admiré de la película.
Si no hubiera sido por esta parte que realmente me gusta de la película, bien podría haberme saltado la película ya que muchas partes no me interesaban tanto.
ᴀᴄᴛᴜᴀᴄɪᴏ́ɴ
No había muchos personajes "cuerdos" en esta película y, por lo tanto, aquellos en los que podía centrarme tenían que ser excelentes, ya que eran los que realmente impulsaban la película.
El personaje principal requiere mucha expresividad, sobre todo para dar el toque cómico a la película. Creo que el actor que interpreta este papel lo hace muy bien. De hecho, si no hubiera sido por el argumento del principio, podría haberme caído simpático antes.
Por otro lado, la otra protagonista, la vecina, fue un personaje que me gustó al instante. La actriz vendió su personaje desde el primer momento, quizá por su carácter, y su introducción fue lo que empezó a darle empuje a la película para mí.
𝕄𝕀𝕊 ℙ𝔼ℕ𝕊𝔸𝕄𝕀𝔼ℕ𝕋𝕆𝕊 𝔽𝕀ℕ𝔸𝕃𝔼𝕊...
Puede que Alive no haya sido la mejor película coreana con la que he empezado, sin embargo ha conseguido mantenerme entretenido durante la mayor parte de ella. Puede que me hubiera ido un poco mejor si no se hubiera "estancado" durante la mayor parte del principio y si la historia hubiera tenido más profundidad. Sin embargo, no me ha parecido mal.
Puede que se deba al hecho de que normalmente no me atraen las películas que no están en inglés nativo, pero no obstante, me siento más interesado en ver más películas coreanas. Puede que ahora explore diferentes géneros, y ya veré a dónde me lleva. Aunque puede que esta no entre en mis recomendaciones.
