MOVIE REVIEW: AWAKE [ENG/ESP]

Awake is a 2021 American science fiction thriller film, directed by Mark Raso, that explores the concept of sleep deprivation as a pandemic.

If you do not know how 2020 went down and how the world changed afterward, we may need to ask what Mars, or wherever you were, was like during your time away. But I'm sure you do know how the coronavirus started and its aggravation into a world pandemic.

Imagine if the pandemic was brought about by some virus causing insomnia (a sleep disorder in which you have trouble falling and/or staying asleep) and all electronics were wiped out. The global hysteria that would ensue simply from lack of sleep for days, no internet devices available, vehicles unable to start, and all.

This movie puts this concept into play, and you'd be amazed at the lengths humans would go simply to have some sleep.

I saw this series using the streaming service, Netflix, and from the sinister music playing at the beginning of the movie, I knew I was in for something thrilling. Without further ado, let's talk about this movie.

The movie starts with Jill, the main character, working as a security guard at a university where she steals drugs from their research labs to sell to a drug dealer to make extra cash.

Jill is a former U.S. Army medic, and a mother of two, Noah and Matilda. The father of Noah and Matilda was never revealed. Because Jill is a recovering addict, the government put her kids under the care of their paternal grandmother, Doris.

Apparently, Jill's relationship with her son, Noah, is dysfunctional. Noah calls her by name, not mom, and sometimes calls her a psycho (where I'm from, I would have had the sweetest beating of a lifetime if I even tried to call my parents by name, let alone psycho; abi you wan collect??😂😂).

Suddenly, as if an EMP had been detonated, all electronics were fried. Cars stopped working, even in motion, and phones were turned off, radio signals seized. Every form of electronic communication was seized and vehicles that ran on electronic control were rendered useless, thereby making travelling a hassle.

Accidents of different kinds began to happen on the roads, and even planes crashed. Chaos slowly began to grow and hospitals became filled. It turned out that, even at the time the incident happened, patients in comas were awoken.

While Jill was driving with Noah and Matilda, the car lost power and they got hit by another vehicle. Finding themselves in a lake, they managed to escape. But Matilda drowned and was later revived by a police officer.

Then night came, and then people just could not fall asleep, but it was not so much of a big deal to them at that time.

As humans would do, they gathered scientists to understand the situation and tackle the problem. A psychiatrist, Dr. Murphy, led the group of scientists.

Dr. Murphy explains that people may never be able to sleep and will soon begin to suffer symptoms of sleep deprivation;

• Behaving irrationally in emotional events.
• Deficiency in attention and working memory.
• Negatively impacted mood.

Jill regularly assesses her mental state by looking at random numbers and then trying to repeat those numbers without looking.

At this point, they began to refer to people that could sleep as "sleepers." An old woman and Matilda, for unknown reasons, were the only ones that could sleep.

Dr. Murphy had the old woman at a place called the hub, running a series of tests to determine how she was able to sleep. Matilda, on the other hand was unknown to Dr. Murphy.

In the desperate search of the scientists to bring Matilda to the hub, Jill takes her children with her as far away as possible. But eventually, she realizes that they may all may die soon and Matilda would live without anybody by her side. Then she decides to take her to the hub to help find answers and solutions.

They encounter life-threatening circumstances on their way to the hub but they make it eventually (just as you have made it till this point 😁, thank you).

By the time they got to the hub, people had already had their minds snapped. The soldiers began to hallucinate war-like circumstances and started shooting at each other.

Jill, Noah and Matilda were lucky to have made it till the next morning. They eventually found the solution and how Matilda could sleep.

I personally saw the movie because I am always interested in thriller movies and the trailer gave me more reason to see it.

The movie did well to portray the effects of sleep deprivation. Bringing to light the most likely ways humans would behave in extreme cases of sleep deprivation.

Though, there may have been some scenes of bloody deaths, they were still moderate. There were no portrayal of sexualism or racism, and that was good.

But, I really wasn't thrilled as I expected to be. And the storyline was somewhat basic to me.

I could recommend this movie to anyone. It did okay.

La película comienza con Jill, el personaje principal, que trabaja como guardia de seguridad en una universidad donde roba drogas de sus laboratorios de investigación para vendérselas a un traficante de drogas para ganar dinero extra.

De repente, como si un EMP hubiera sido detonado, todos los componentes electrónicos estaban fritos. Los autos dejaron de funcionar, incluso en movimiento, y los teléfonos fueron apagados, las señales de radio se incautaron. Se incautaron todas las formas de comunicación electrónica y los vehículos que funcionaban con control electrónico quedaron inutilizados, lo que hizo que viajar fuera una molestia.

Empezaron a ocurrir accidentes de diferente índole en las carreteras, e incluso se estrellaron aviones. El caos comenzó a crecer lentamente y los hospitales se llenaron. Resultó que, incluso en el momento en que ocurrió el incidente, se despertó a los pacientes en coma.

Mientras Jill conducía con Noah y Matilda, el automóvil perdió potencia y otro vehículo los atropelló. Al encontrarse en un lago, lograron escapar. Pero Matilda se ahogó y luego fue revivida por un oficial de policía.

Luego llegó la noche, y luego la gente simplemente no podía conciliar el sueño, pero no era gran cosa para ellos en ese momento.

Como harían los humanos, reunieron a científicos para comprender la situación y abordar el problema. Un psiquiatra, el Dr. Murphy, dirigió el grupo de científicos.

El Dr. Murphy explica que es posible que las personas nunca puedan dormir y pronto comiencen a sufrir síntomas de falta de sueño;

• Comportarse irracionalmente en eventos emocionales.
• Deficiencia en la atención y memoria de trabajo.
• Estado de ánimo negativamente impactado.

Jill evalúa regularmente su estado mental mirando números aleatorios y luego tratando de repetir esos números sin mirar.

En este punto, comenzaron a referirse a las personas que podían dormir como "durmientes". Una anciana y Matilda, por razones desconocidas, fueron las únicas que pudieron dormir.

El Dr. Murphy llevó a la anciana a un lugar llamado el centro, realizando una serie de pruebas para determinar cómo podía dormir. Matilda, por otro lado, era desconocida para el Dr. Murphy.

En la búsqueda desesperada de los científicos por llevar a Matilda al centro, Jill se lleva a sus hijos lo más lejos posible. Pero finalmente, se da cuenta de que es posible que todos mueran pronto y Matilda viviría sin nadie a su lado. Entonces decide llevarla al centro para ayudarla a encontrar respuestas y soluciones.

Se encuentran con circunstancias que amenazan la vida en su camino hacia el centro, pero finalmente lo logran (tal como lo ha hecho hasta este punto 😁, gracias).

Para cuando llegaron al centro, la gente ya había perdido la cabeza. Los soldados comenzaron a alucinar circunstancias de guerra y empezaron a dispararse unos a otros.

Jill, Noah y Matilda tuvieron suerte de haber llegado hasta la mañana siguiente. Eventualmente encontraron la solución y cómo Matilda podía dormir.

Personalmente vi la película porque siempre me interesan las películas de suspenso y el tráiler me dio más razones para verla.

La película hizo bien en retratar los efectos de la privación del sueño. Sacar a la luz las formas más probables en que los humanos se comportarían en casos extremos de privación del sueño.

Aunque, puede haber habido algunas escenas de muertes sangrientas, todavía eran moderadas. No hubo representación de sexualismo o racismo, y eso fue bueno.

Pero, realmente no estaba tan emocionado como esperaba. Y la historia era algo básica para mí.

Podría recomendar esta película a cualquiera. Lo hizo bien.
