Colony (2026): Zombies in the Hive. For some time now, the Asian film market has been making positive inroads into this genre; films of various genres have been produced, and they have gradually gained a following among movie lovers. For example, I really liked the Thai horror film The Photographer when I first saw it. However, it’s clear that Korean filmmakers have been dominating the market more frequently, and I’ve particularly enjoyed a film that combines horror, drama, action, suspense, and science fiction all in one package. A film by the same director as Train to Busan, Yeon Sang-ho; while it is true that it’s a zombie movie, from my perspective, it strays from what we’ve traditionally seen.
The film is a kind of critique of how we use technology in today’s world and how it negatively influences the evolution of humanity. Now, we get to experience all of this in the movie Colony, which is set to be released in 2026. It’s truly something very different from the famous viral infections that turn people into zombies; however, you have to see it for yourself to realize firsthand how the infected will behave in relation to their environment and other humans. I guarantee that this is even more unsettling and addictive; the director has done everything possible to make us, as viewers, feel like we’re part of the action and to draw out all the anxiety that each scene generates.

Well, we know that talking about the characters will be a little complicated because of their names, hehehehe, but basically I’m going to focus on two characters whose actions are different, but who are definitely the ones that create the most tension for me. First, we have Jun Ji-hyun, playing Professor Kwon Se-jeong—a strong woman who doesn’t let anyone walk all over her. Although there will be moments of weakness, those moments serve as the driving force that moves the story forward. She has an incredible personality, and Jun Ji-hyun portrays her exceptionally well.
The antagonist, Koo Kyo-hwan, playing Seo Young-cheol—a bitter scientist whose performance is overly complex and unpredictable—is the driving force behind the tragedy; but it doesn’t stop there—his mind goes even further, and you’ll find out why. There are other characters; while it’s true they’re secondary, they’re truly essential elements for giving continuity to each plot point. A cohesive team that knows what it’s doing; in short, they all make humanity matter.
The events will take place at a major convention center in Seoul; a technology conference focusing on the human mind and how relationships are affected by ineffective communication. But this has upset Seo Young-cheol, who makes a call to warn that a terrorist attack is about to take place—one that could change the fate of humanity—and that he will be the only “vaccine,” since he has injected himself with the pathogens. This man is resentful because his creation was stolen and someone else has used it for their own benefit.
While the company director is giving his speech, he notices Seo Young-cheol. The police have already been notified, but I don’t think there’s anything that can be done, because the encounter between the director and Seo Young-cheol takes place inside one of the restrooms; they argue over the theft of the project, they fight, but in a moment of inattention, Seo Young-cheol injects the director with something. Perhaps it’s the virus that’s been released, and the CEO immediately mutates; the chain reaction begins inside the building, and little by little, people start turning into a strange breed of zombies. Naturally, the building is quarantined, and those trapped inside fight for survival.
What’s exciting about this type of zombie is that they start out running on all fours like animals; they attack when there’s light, and the trapped people can sense this. But that’s not all—since the infected aren’t independent, they have a kind of collective communication that gradually leads them to evolve to another level. At first, they attacked anything; now they’re no longer on all fours—they’ve evolved and run just like humans—so the survivors are in big trouble. Here, we’re showing that this isn’t your typical infection.
If they are bitten, the mutation is immediate; everyone must take care of themselves, and while Professor Kwon Se-jeong struggles to find a solution, we are all filled with endless anxiety over how they will manage to save themselves. Because it’s not just about watching out for the infected; as they evolve, they acquire new traits that make them even more lethal. You’ll realize that they act in a coordinated, swarm-like manner, and what’s coming will be even worse. I guarantee you’ll be glued to the screen. Is there really any hope? Could the mad scientist actually be the key to a vaccine? Are we facing a true wave of technological and biological terror? Come and enjoy it.
The setting and cinematography are unique aspects of this film; at the beginning, we see scenes where everything is beautiful, colorful, and brightly lit. But as the action unfolds, we realize that all that beauty is fading away, creating an atmosphere of incredible terror and suspense. Every hallway, every hiding place, generates a great deal of anxiety and a terrifying chill that runs through your veins. Now, although this is a film where everything is fiction, it invites us to reflect on scientific and technological advances and how they can be fatal to humanity.
We know that many advances can save lives; however, uncontrolled experimentation can lead to scenarios like this. On the other hand, as human beings, we are largely incapable of establishing effective face-to-face communication throughout much of our lives. Instead, we’ve grown accustomed to letting technology do that for us. Here, we’re shown that social media, apps, and technological interconnectivity can be our enemies. Desde hace un tiempo, el mercado cinematográfico asiático ha incursionado de manera positiva en este mundo; y es que se han creado películas de diferentes géneros, que poco a poco han calado en el público cinéfilo. Por ejemplo; en un inicio me gustó mucho la producción tailandesa el fotógrafo, la cual está dentro del género de terror. Sin embargo; se ha visto que los coreanos han llenado el mercado con mayor frecuencia y justamente he disfrutado de un filme que engloba el terror, el drama, la acción, el suspenso y la ciencia ficción en un solo paquete. Una película del mismo director de Estación Zombie o Tren a Busan, Yeon Sang-ho; que si bien es cierto, presenta una película de zombies; desde mi punto de vista se aleja de lo que hemos visto de manera tradicional.
El filme es una especie de denuncia sobre como usamos la tecnología en la realidad actual y como ésta influye negativamente en la evolución de la humanidad. Ahora; todo esto lo disfrutamos en la película Colony, la cual está saliendo del horno 2026. De verdad que es algo muy diferente a las famosas infecciones virales y como esta convierte a las personas en zombies; sin embargo, debes verla para que te des cuenta de primera mano, como será el funcionamiento de los infectados ante la presencia del ambiente y del ser humano. Te garantizo que esto es más perturbador y adictivo; pues el director ha hecho todo, para que nosotros como espectadores formenos parte de la acción y salga de nuestro ser toda la ansiedad que genera cada escena.

Bueno; sabemos que hablar de los personajes será un poco complicado debido a sus nombres jejejeje, pero básicamente me voy a basar en dos personajes cuyas acciones son diferentes, pero definitivamente son los que para mí generan la mayor tensión. En primer lugar tenemos a Jun Ji-hyun, interpretando a la profesora Kwon Se-jeong; una mujer fuerte, no es moneda de oro para nadie y aunque habrá momentos de debilidad; esa acción evoluciona como el motor para avanzar en esta historia; una personalidad increíble y lo hace excelentemente bien.
El antagonista Koo Kyo-hwan encarnando a Seo Young-cheol; un científico resentido, con una actuación demasiado compleja y cambiante, es el motor que genera la tragedia; pero no solo se queda allí, sino que su mente va más allá y tú sabrás el por qué. Existen otros personajes; que si bien es cierto son secundarios, de verdad que son elementos imprescindibles para dar continuidad a cada acción. Un equipo cohesionado y que sabe lo que hace; en pocas palabras, todos ellos hacen que la humanidad sea importante.
Los eventos se darán en un importante centro de convenciones de Seúl; una conferencia de tecnología que trata sobre la mente humana y como las relaciones se ven afectada por una comunicación ineficaz. Pero eso le ha molestado a Seo Young-cheol, quien hace una llamada para advertir que se va a generar un ataque terrorista, donde el destino de la humanidad puede cambiar y él será la única vacuna, ya que se ha inyectado los patógenos. Este tipo está resentido, ya que su creación fue robada y alguien más la usado para beneficio propio.
Mientras que el director de la compañía da su discurso, se percata de la presencia de Seo Young-cheol. Ya la policía ha sido avisada, pero creo que no hay nada que hacer, porque dentro de uno de los baños ocurre el encuentro entre el director y Seo Young-cheol; discuten por el robo del proyecto, pelean, pero en un descuido, Seo Young-cheol inyecta algo al director. A lo mejor es el virus que se ha liberado y de forma inmediata el director ha mutado; se inicia la cadena de conversión dentro del edificio y poco a poco, las personas se van convirtiendo en una rara raza de zombies. Lógicamente, el edificio entra en cuarentena y los que quedan encerrados luchan por la supervivencia.
Lo emocionante de esta clase de zombies es que inician corriendo en cuatro patas como animales; atacan cuando hay luz y eso es detectado por las personas atrapadas. Pero no solo eso; ya que los infectados no son independientes, tienen una especie de comunicación colectiva, que poco a poco los lleva a evolucionar a otro nivel. Al principio atacaban cualquier cosa; ahora ya no están en cuatro patas, evolucionaron y corren como cualquier humano; ahora los sobrevivientes están en muchos problemas. Por acá vamos detallando, que la infección no es la común en estos casos.
Si son mordidos, la mutación es inmediata; todos deben cuidarse y mientras la profesora Kwon Se-jeong lucha por buscar una solución; todos nos llenamos de ansiedad infinita por saber como harán para salvarse. Porque no solo es cuidarse de los infectados; sino que, a medida que evolucionan, adquieren nuevas características que los hacen más letales; te darás cuenta, que ellos actúan de manera coordinada, en colmena y lo que viene será peor; te garantizo que te quedarás pegado a la pantalla ¿Será cierto que hay esperanza?; ¿Será que el científico loco verdaderamente es la vacuna?; ¿Será que estamos en presencia de una verdadera ola de terror tecnológico y biológico?; vente y disfruta.
La ambientación y la fotografía son aspectos únicos que se presentan en este filme; al inicio observarmos escenas donde todo es hermoso, colorido e iluminado. Pero a medida que avanza la acción; nos damos cuenta que toda esa hermosura se va acabando, creando un ambiente de terror y suspenso increíble. Cada pasillo, cada escondite, genera mucha ansiedad y un frío aterrador que cala en las venas. Ahora, aunque esta es una película donde todo es ficción; la misma nos invita a reflexionar sobre los avances científicos y tecnológicos y como esos pueden ser fatales para la humanidad.
Sabemos que muchos avances pueden salvar vidas; sin embargo, la experimentación descontrolada puede generar escenarios de este tipo. Por otra parte; nosotros como seres humanos, en gran parte de nuestras vidas somos incapaces de establecer comunicaciones efectivas cara a cara. Al contrario; ya nos acostumbramos a que la tecnología haga eso por nosotros. Aquí nos enseñan que las redes, las aplicaciones y la interconexión tecnológica pueden ser nuestros enemigos. En pocas palabras; la trama nos lleva a pensar, que debemos ser más humanos y menos tecnologicos; saludos y nos vemos pronto, no dejen de ver Colony, es buena y diferente.
