No One Lives (2012): Hunter or Hunted? While it’s true that this movie isn’t set during Halloween, it’s also true that all the elements and circumstances in it make it the perfect recommendation to wrap up the holiday season by enjoying it. I say this because the slasher genre is presented in a different way here—we won’t see clueless students running around while being attacked by a slow-moving killer. Here, things take a different turn and are driven by brutal events, where, moreover, we don’t know who the hunter is or who the hunted is; anyone can become that murderous monster that tears human flesh apart—whether out of revenge, for fun, or out of necessity.
On the other hand, the gore isn’t left out, because the deaths are quite creative and carried out in a thousand different ways. Without a doubt, Nobody Sees (2012) is an incredible film directed by Ryuhei Kitamura and starring Luke Evans—a duo that has come together to deliver quality in every scene. It’s a film with a dizzying, frenetic pace that leaves no room for boredom, and you’re sure to love it because of the blood, dark humor, creativity, horror, and violence these guys can deliver without needing to be Michael Myers or any of his ilk.
As I said before, director Ryuhei Kitamura was the one who brought us this incredible cult classic—a movie that few have seen, so I think they’ve missed out on something truly splendid. The direction really stands out in its delivery of pure adrenaline, with that fascinating video game vibe and a touch of manga, all combined with the raw slasher style characteristic of Halloween season. In short, if you want to wrap up this season by watching something different from what you’re used to, No One Lives is the perfect choice for you. I’ve watched it several times myself—that’s how good it is—because here, rescue and survival take on a whole new meaning.

The film centers on several characters, who together give it a steady pace and whose actions can shift the story at any moment; however, in this brutal, terrifying, and bloody tale, some stand out and are the ones who drive the key events that give this festival of fear its full meaning. On one hand, we have Luke Evans, who is simply the driver—a calm, calculating man who apparently just wants a new life with his girlfriend Betty (Laura Ramsey), a girl who is incredibly submissive; we don’t know why, but we’ll soon see the actions she must take—not much else can be said.
Emma (Adelaide Clemens) is shrewd and very intelligent, and she just wants to escape the clutches of her captor; she suffers from severe trauma caused precisely by this evil character. As always, there must be antagonists, and in this case, there are several; however, only one of them is the impulsive one who seemingly ruins everything: Flynn (Derek Magyar), a violent and arrogant man who torments the leader, Hoag (Lee Tergesen). Overall, the performances are very good and believable, and they truly bring the story to life. There’s a lot of anguish, terror, anxiety, chaos, and brutal killings, all portrayed in a way that feels—if you will—realistic. We’ve seen Luke act in Fast & Furious 6 and Dracula—spectacular films where his focus is unmatched.
Now, the story begins in the most natural way and unfolds along three different threads, seemingly at different times. On one hand, we see a bloodied and tormented girl running desperately through the woods. On the other hand, we have a couple—the driver and his girlfriend Batty—who seem to be moving in search of new horizons. Later, on the grounds of a mansion, we see a truck with a crew trying to move the house, but to their surprise, the owners arrive, and in that instant—without saying a word—the impulsive Flynn pulls out his gun and kills them in cold blood. All of this enrages the leader, Hoag, so they decide to abort the operation.
This robbery—and a huge chunk of the loot—has been thwarted; however, fate is cruel, and encounters are inevitable. Because later on, after resting at a roadside diner, the couple in love decides to grab a bite to eat and heads to a small restaurant. While they’re there, the gang shows up, and Flynn decides to make a pass at the girl. The driver is a little tense, but Hoag steps in and things don’t escalate—or so you’d think. Well, the couple leaves, but as always, Flynn attacks them on the road, kidnaps them, and steals their car, believing they’re millionaires and that he can clean out all their bank accounts. This incident once again drives the leader up the wall; however, what comes next is unprecedented and beyond comparison, because in the blink of an eye, the greatest massacre ever seen could unfold; who will survive?
Truly, the revelations invite you to enjoy unexpected events, where the rules of the game change completely. Nothing is left to the imagination, because honestly, you won’t be able to imagine or predict the things that are about to happen. This is due to the fast pace of the action and the protagonists’ mental breakdowns, which lead to very macabre, bloody, and ruthless events. The most striking thing about all this is that if you look for a way to escape, that desire hits a wall that has only one thought: death, destruction, blood, and chaos. Don’t try to figure out who it is, because you won’t have time for that; hiding isn’t an option, because the threat will knock on your door with a bag full of human remains.
Deserted highways, remote homes, isolated towns, motels—an extremely open landscape that, paradoxically, becomes a place from which there is no escape. Day blends into night, because there’s no specific time to kill, try to flee, or die. The truth is that this low-light setting, combined with the cold cinematography and truly terrifying sound design, comes together to deliver high-quality shots, suspense, and horror. Simply put, all of this is designed to make the characters feel isolated from any possible help at all times; so, from my point of view, it’s a plot simmering in a pot on the verge of exploding, where anxiety and tension never subside—not even at the very end.
There’s a well-established saying: “Leave those who are quiet alone,” because we never know what a person is feeling inside, what problems they’re going through, or simply—we can never know just how troubled their mind is. Appearances can deceive anyone, but beneath that underestimated personality may lurk the greatest of murderers; the same can be true of a daring person who might reveal an even darker side than we expect. What is certain is that both worlds can lead to your dark downfall; be careful of those you cross paths with. No one knows how a person might act when they feel cornered; their basest instincts can surface without reason. Will you be the one to survive? Best regards, and see you soon.

Nadie Vive (2012): ¿Cazador o Cazado?.
