The Oswalt family consists of four people, and, as you might expect, they’ll be at the center of the story’s negativity; however, the plot revolves around Ethan Hawke, who plays the decadent and obsessed writer Ellison Oswalt—a man whose ambition outweighs family values, putting everyone’s well-being at risk. Here, we won’t see someone who saves the day; rather, from my perspective, he’s an utterly pathetic figure who is professionally washed up and frustrated. In short, he’s a writer who creates books based on real-life crimes, and in this case, his desire to overcome financial problems and regain fame leads him to a remote town where a mass murder took place.
In fact, the film opens with scenes of an unconventional and very mysterious murder. Now, Oswalt and his family have moved in order to investigate these events; however, as is typical of the writer, they’re always close to the action, but in this case, the character’s deranged mind came up with the idea of moving into the very house where that mass murder took place; Oswalt’s mind is truly completely deranged, and he’s done all this without his family knowing. This is something the local police chief also disagrees with, since the crime was an event that caused a great deal of harm to the community.
The truth is that the story unfolds like a typical move and with the start of an investigation into a new case. But when Oswalt goes up to the attic, he finds a box containing a VCR and Super 8 tapes with titles that seem harmless at first glance—apparently family memories. What happened in the house has sparked tremendous curiosity in Oswalt, since the mass murder involved four people and one of the victims is missing. Is it a killer and kidnapper, or some kind of demonic possession or satanic ritual? These are things that are gradually revealed as the unsettling story unfolds, and we are right there in the thick of it—another achievement by the director, who succeeds in instilling in us the same paranoia that Oswalt feels.

There doesn’t seem to be a pattern to the murders; so far, there’s no connection—except that one member of each murdered family goes missing, and no one knows why. Can a murderer commit such atrocities over such a long period of time? Could it be some kind of demon that hasn’t yet come to light? Oswalt’s actions are certainly unprecedented; all that matters to him is fame and money, even though he knows his family is in danger. The plot of this film is utterly disturbing and terrifying, with a completely unexpected twist and ending; for my part, just knowing that an inexplicable murder took place in that house would make me look the other way.
The atmosphere, cinematography, and sound all come together in this film to form an absolutely essential trilogy. I say this because everything combines to create an incredible sense of claustrophobia, anxiety, and paranoia. There isn’t much lighting, so in my opinion, the house—rather than a place of family refuge—seems like the center of a demonic possession. Every room in the house generates anxiety; it leaves no room for deep rest or for enjoying time with family. It is definitely a cold place, designed entirely to convey exactly what it intends to: a deep fear. All that darkness surrounding the characters forces us to look very closely, to see if we can discover something hidden in the corners of the house.
The film conveys a message that remains relevant over time: we cannot set aside the well-being of our family simply because an uncontrolled ambition arises within us to become the person we once were. It’s okay to have ambition, but it should be an ambition rooted in maturity that doesn’t endanger others. Sinister; es una de esas películas que permite crear un ambiente tenebroso, asfixiante e inquietante que pocos pudieran soportar. Ahora; toda esta tragedia se basa exclusivamente en el afán de una persona por sobresalir, por tener minutos de fama y buena posición económica, sin importar lo que verdaderamente le puede ocurrir a su familia. Total angustia y desesperación es lo que ha logrado el director Scott Derrickson, dando origen desde el primer minuto, a ese sentido de fatalidad terrorífica que se adentra en el interior de una simple casa familiar y la pregunta es; ¿Tú familia vale el sacrificio a pagar?

En fin; es un escritor que se encarga de crear libros a partir de crímenes que sucedieron en la vida real y en este caso; su sentido de superar los problemas financieros y volver a la fama, lo llevan a una localidad foránea donde se cometió un crimen colectivo.
De hecho; la cinta inicia con imágenes de un asesinato poco convencional y muy misterioso. Ahora, Oswalt y su familia se han mudado con el fin de investigar tales hechos; sin embargo, como es costumbre del escritor, siempre están cerca de los sucesos, pero en este caso, la mente enferma del personaje tuvo la idea de mudarse justamente en la casa donde ocurrió ese asesinato colectivo; de verdad que la mente de Oswalt está totalmente perturbada y todo esto lo ha hecho sin que su familia se entere. Cosa con la que tampoco está de acuerdo el jefe de policía de la localidad, ya que el crimen fue un suceso que causó mucho daño a la comunidad.

Pero cuando Oswalt sube al ático, encuentra una caja que contiene un reproductor y cintas súper 8 con títulos que parecen inofensivos a primera vista, al parecer son memorias familiares. Lo ocurrido en la casa ha despertado en Oswalt una curiosidad tremenda, ya que el asesinato colectivo fue de cuatro personas y uno de sus miembros está desaparecido. ¿Se tratará de un asesino y secuestrador; o será algún tipo de posesión demoníaca o sexta satánica?; son cosas que se van descubriendo al transcurrir de la inquietante historia y nosotros somos partícipes de ello; otro logro del director, al crear en nosotros la misma paranoia de Oswalt.
Los sucesos que acontecen acrecientan el terror mental y la paranoia de Oswalt y para completar, no se queda con solo haber encontrado las cintas; sino que este hecho ha despertado nuevas ideas, ya que las mismas, tienen una data de tiempo muy alejada una con respecto a la otra; la curiosidad lo mata y como sus títulos parecen inofensivos, empieza a verlas y lo que allí sucede es más perturbador aún. Trata de llamar a la policía, pero se da cuenta que tiene una oportunidad única para crear un libro sin precedentes; los asesinatos que aparecen en esas películas van subiendo de nivel por lo atroz que son, agudizando aun mas la paranoia del protagonista, al parecer su familia no importa.
En los asesinatos no parece hacer un patrón, de momento no hay conexión; solo que un miembro de los asesinados desaparece y no se sabe el por qué de las cosas. ¿Puede un asesino hacer esas atrocidades en una línea de tiempo tan larga?; ¿Será alguno tipo de demonio que aun no ha salido a la luz?. Ciertamente las acciones de Oswalt no tienen precedente, solo importa la fama y el dinero a sabiendas que la familia corre peligro. La trama de este filme es absolutamente perturbador y aterrador, con un giro y final totalmente inesperado; por mi parte, el solo hecho de saber que en esa casa ocurrió un asesinato inexplicable, mi mirada se dirigiría hacia otro lado.
Tanto el ambiente, como la fotografía y el sonido; forman en esta película una trilogía absolutamente necesaria. Digo esto; porque todo se combina para crear una sensación de claustrofobia, ansiedad y paranoia increíble. No hay mucha iluminación, por lo que a mi pensar, la casa más que un lugar de resguardo familiar, parece el centro de una posesión demoníaca. Cada espacio de la casa genera ansiedad, no da lugar para el descanso profundo, ni para pasarla bien en familia; definitivamente, es un lugar frío y hecho totalmente para mostrar realmente lo que se quiere transmitir; un temor profundo, toda esa oscuridad que se encuentra alrededor de los personajes, nos obliga a mirar con total detenimiento, para ver si descubrimos algo oculto entre los rincones del lugar.
La película deja un mensaje que siempre está latente en el tiempo y es que, no se puede dejar de lado el bienestar familiar, solo por el hecho de que en nuestro ser, surja una ambición descontrolada para volver a ser la persona que eramos antes. Se puede tener ambición, pero una ambición con cierta madurez que no ponga en peligro a las demás personas. En pocas palabras; esta película es un llamado de atención a la sensatez y a la madurez emocional, no hay peor terror en la vida, que ver sufrir a tus seres queridos; saludos y nos vemos pronto.
