Hola, querido hiver.

Como primera reseña cinematográfica para este año he elegido Agora, haciéndole un guiño al pasado. Se trata de un film español del año 2009 dirigido por Alejandro Amenábar. Conocía algunos de sus trabajos anteriores y me gustaban. Unido a que Rachel Weisz, la actriz protagonista, es una de mis favoritas desde que hizo La Momia, era de esas apuestas prácticamente seguras.

La acción se desarrolla en los últimos tiempos del Imperio Romano, en la ciudad egipcia de Alejandría. El cristianismo está cobrando fuerza y se radicaliza, y ante él encontraremos a la filósofa y matemática Hipatia (Rachel Weisz) tratando de mantener a salvo la sabiduría del mundo antiguo que se custodia en la legendaria y ahora desaparecida biblioteca de Alejandría.

La trama se complica porque Davos (Max Minghella), que es uno de los esclavos de Hipatia y también su amante, aspira a la libertad y para ello se refugia en el reciente movimiento revolucionario cristiano. Se debatirá entre proteger a su amada o seguir su instinto de ser dueño de su vida.

El peso de la película recae sobre Hipatia, una figura histórica maravillosa, cuya vida se retrata con gran rigor aunque haya alguna licencia que otra. Amenábar se caracteriza por ser meticuloso y no escatimar en su proceso de documentación y es capaz de recrear la época en la que transcurre Agora con una aproximación asombrosa.

Las escenas en las que la protagonista habla sobre astronomía y filosofía son deliciosas. Si esos temas te interesan la vas a disfrutar, sin duda. Aprenderás algo nuevo y sentirás que eres uno más de sus alumnos sentado en esas gradas escuchándola.

Puede que haya ciertos momentos algo lentos aunque no llegan a exasperar. Eso sí, en cuanto se desata la acción final apenas deja tiempo para contener el aliento hasta su desenlace. Este no es fiel a la historia real, algo que no me importó que se modificase para redondear el guion y suavizar lo que de verdad ocurrió con esta mujer que fue una adelantada a su tiempo.

En resumen, te recomiendo que la veas si tienes la oportunidad. Estamos ante una película que puede compararse sin rubor a clásicos del género como Cleopatra, Ben-Hur o Gladiator.

As my first film review for this year I have chosen Agora, with a nod to the past. It is a 2009 Spanish film directed by Alejandro Amenábar. I knew some of his previous works and liked them. And with Rachel Weisz, the leading actress, being one of my favourites since she did The Mummy, it was one of those almost sure bets.

The action takes place in the late Roman Empire, in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. Christianity is gaining strength and becoming radicalised, and before it we find philosopher and mathematician Hypatia (Rachel Weisz) trying to keep safe the wisdom of the ancient world held in the legendary and now defunct library of Alexandria.

The plot thickens as Davos (Max Minghella), who is one of Hypatia's slaves and also her lover, aspires to freedom and takes refuge in the recent Christian revolutionary movement. He will be torn between protecting his beloved or following his instinct to be master of his life.

The weight of the film rests on Hypatia, a wonderful historical figure, whose life is portrayed with great rigour, even if there is the occasional licence. Amenábar is characteristically meticulous and sparing in his documentation process and is able to recreate the period in which Agora takes place with astonishing accuracy.

The scenes in which the protagonist talks about astronomy and philosophy are delightful. If these subjects interest you, you will definitely enjoy it. You'll learn something new and you'll feel like you're one of her students sitting on those bleachers listening to her.

There may be some slow moments, but they don't become exasperating. However, once the final action is unleashed, there is hardly any time to hold your breath until the end. It is not faithful to the true story, something I didn't mind being changed to round out the script and soften what really happened to this woman who was ahead of her time.

In short, I recommend you see it if you have the chance. This is a film that can be unashamedly compared to classics of the genre such as Cleopatra, Ben-Hur or Gladiator.

I was always amazed by Rachel's angelic attractiveness 😍, I was pleasantly surprised to see her and just my mind goes back to the mummy haha but also to Constantine which was a film that I liked a lot 😎

WoW but what a wonderful recommendation for all the Lore I'm reading, it goes through philosophical and religious conflicts in which Christianity happens to command more the touch of that famous Universal Library of Alexandria, it is said that there was knowledge of the Babylonian Hanging Gardens and a Titan that my memory is not enough to remember the name haha 😅, I saw that library in a video game called Tomb Raider, I was a teenager and since then I have seen videos about his great mystery etc.

I will definitely add it to my list of films with mythology to see, I don't know if you have seen Pascu and Rodri but all this kind of ancient theme in my case attracts a lot 😃

WoW pero que maravillosa recomendación por todo el Lore que estoy leyendo, se pasea por conflictos filosoficos y religiosos en el que el cristianismo pasa a comandar mas el toque de esa famosa Biblioteca Universal de Alejandria, allí se dice se encontraban conocimientos de los Jardines Colgantes Babilonicos y un Titan que ya mi memoria no da para recordar el nombre jaja 😅, esa biblioteca la vi en un videojuego llamado Tomb Raider, estaba adolescente y desde allí he visto videos sobre su gran misterio etc

Definitivamente la agregare a mi lista de films con mitologia para ver, no se si haz visto Pascu y Rodri pero todo este tipo de temática antigua en mi caso atrae mucho 😃

I really fascinated with all the roman setting, because it took my imagination, and really want to go back in times to learn and to see how the society back then. With all the greatest wonders that they left, I wonder who they do it in the past, that can stand the test of time so that we can see now in the modern world.
