I finally watched the movie Weapons, which I wanted to review yesterday, but it wasn’t showing here then. Now, it’s finally out, and I’ve completed watching it. The movie boasts a massive star cast with some big-name actors. You’ll easily recognize one actor, Josh, aka our Thanos, along with Wong and Silver Surfer, whom we recently saw in Fantastic 4. So, you get to see three MCU stars in this one.
Before diving into the basic story, let me tell you something important: this movie has an 8.0 rating on IMDb. Everywhere you hear about it, people say it’s an amazing, unique, and totally different movie. It might even feel like this could be the best movie of the year. But how much truth is there to that? Let’s talk about it.
Basic Storyline
The movie is set in a small American town where, one day at 2:17, 17 kids from the same classroom suddenly vanish. The story revolves around what happened to those 17 kids and is shown from the perspectives of four people: a teacher, a principal, a police officer, and so on. Each perspective gives us a different angle on what the teacher thinks, what the police think, and what the principal thinks.
After watching it, I felt they could’ve added one more chapter about the villain to explain a few things, as some details about the villain remain unclear, which is a bit disappointing. But don’t judge the movie without reading the full review.
If they had added a chapter on the villain, the movie could’ve been even better. That said, you’ll need to “survive” the movie for about 40-45 minutes. If you’re into high-octane, masala-packed, intense movies or expect horror movies to be scary right from the start, you’ll need to be patient here. The first 40-45 minutes build up the mystery, which might feel slow to some.
My opinion
It’s not slow—it’s a slow burn. There’s a difference. Slow means dragging for no reason, but here, those initial minutes are setting the stage for surprises later, making them worth it. You just need to stick with it. After that, the movie becomes much easier to watch.
Then, one by one, new twists and turns keep coming, and the climax will genuinely blow you away. You might wonder if this movie is family-friendly. Yes, you can watch it with family—there are no nude or sex scenes—but there are plenty of brutal scenes, like skulls lying around and gory moments. If you’re okay with that, you can show it to kids, but I think younger ones might find it a bit disturbing. Keep that in mind when deciding who to watch it with.
Does the movie succeed in scaring you? Absolutely, it does. The jump scares work well. If I compare it directly to Together, that was a psychological horror, but this is a straight-up horror movie, as a horror movie should be. It doesn’t rely on vague psychological tricks to scare you. The jump scares, the creepy atmosphere, and the overall vibe all succeed in scaring you. Some scenes will leave you shocked, and the climax delivers an edge-of-your-seat experience where you’ll be glued to the screen, wondering what happens next.
Yes, some might draw parallels to another movie—an Indian one I won’t name. When I heard about it, I thought it might involve a scientific experiment or something else (I won’t spoil it). If you’ve seen that Indian movie, you might guess the ending, but it doesn’t ruin the experience. The ending could’ve been slightly better, but it doesn’t detract much from the movie.
Final Verdict
Weapons is a must-watch. You should definitely see it, even with your family. Is it the best horror movie of the year or one of the top movies overall? I wouldn’t say that yet, as I believe bigger movies are coming. But if no better movies come along, this could easily be one of the year’s best. I’d rate it 7.5 out of 10 and strongly recommend you go watch it. Where I saw it, it was only in English, so check if it’s released in Hindi near you. If not, it’ll likely hit OTT platforms in Hindi within 2-3 months. For now, it’s a must-watch. A few flaws don’t make it a bad movie—it’s definitely great and worth your time.
