These is the very first Indian action movie I started watching while growing up and at first we use to know it as dantawayia not until I recently found out while scrobbing that the name is rebel.
Can't blame me. All we care about in a movie as of then was action and nothing else.
What happens when a person who has spent his entire life trying to stay away from violence is suddenly forced to become the very thing he never wanted to be? These is one of the questions that came to my mind while watching Rebel (2012), is directed by Raghava Lawrence and starring Prabhas as Rishi.
I didn't see Rishi begin this movie as the angry man I eventually meet. He starts out as a happy-go-lucky young man, the son of Bhupathi, a powerful man who has his own reputation and influence. But Bhupathi doesn't want his son to inherit his violent way of life. Instead, he sends Rishi away to study and learn music. So there is almost a contradiction built into Rishi from the beginning: he is the son of a powerful man, but he is being raised to become something different.
Then we have the villains. Rishi is searching for Stephen and Robert, and the mystery surrounding their identities and their connection to his family's tragedy gives the revenge plot something to chase. Mukesh Rishi plays Jayaram/Robert, while Pradeep Rawat plays Simhadri. It gradually reveals how deeply connected these people are to the destruction of Rishi's family.
Tears almost ran out of my eyes when rishi found out his parents were dead. It's was so emotional.
I think the movie's treatment of the father-son relationship deserves attention. Bhupathi doesn't want Rishi to follow his path, which makes his death even more important to Rishi's transformation. His father was already a powerful figure, but he wanted his son to live differently. In a strange way, Rishi ends up becoming exactly the kind of person his father didn't want him to become not because he wanted that life, but because circumstances pushed him there. But I don't like it that way.
The father tries to protect the son's innocence. The enemies destroy that innocence.
And I observed a clear difference between the two halves of the film. The first half spends more time establishing Rishi's personality, his relationship with Deepali, his family and his carefree nature. Then the story takes a much darker direction after the major tragedy, turning the second half into a search for the people responsible.
