A point you missed is that William Marshall insisted that his character not be a stereotype and be a man of honor and dignity, which the producers agreed with. Marshall is not only a fine actor, he was also one heck of a nice guy. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times at various functions, and at one of those events he performed a soliloquy from King Lear.
