Dances with Wolves is an American film directed by Kevin Costner and released in 1990.

The story is set during the American Civil War and follows Lieutenant John Dunbar, played by Costner, in the aftermath of the Civil War (1861-1865) and in the midst of settling the West (1785-1890), who makes his way to a distant frontier outpost that has been abandoned by the soldiers.

As he adjusts to his new life in the solitude of the prairie, Dunbar befriends the Native Americans, particularly the Sioux tribe, learning their culture and way of life, Dunbar is accepted by them and is given the name "Dances with Wolves".

This is how he meets "Stand with your fist in the air", a white woman who was adopted by the tribe as a child.

The film explores the themes of cross-cultural communication, mutual respect and man's relationship with nature.
