Ryan's Daughter a little known film

Ryan's Daughter may be a little-seen film, perhaps supported by an unfavourable social and cultural situation, but I find it a dense and far more complex work than its immediate appearance might suggest.

Like all of Lean's films, this one has impeccable formal beauty and a workmanship of many carats.

The plot anecdotes are concise and the events that take place in the film, though numerous, are not overwhelming, but David Lean chooses to take his time, with the deliberate aim of allowing each feeling to reach its deepest dimension,

Thus increasing the density of the film, not just a collection of facts, but rather seeking meaning in the intentional charge with which the director tries to imbue every act he shows, adding a rare dose of meaningful symbolism.

This symbolic power of the film has a lot to do with Lean's well-known ability to use the landscape to capture his love story and make it a real driving force of the narrative.

The sea, the rain, the wind, the cliffs, the sand and all the components of Ireland's beautiful landscape are fully integrated into the story from the end credits onwards.

It is clear that these are inherent characteristics of the filmmaker, but not the only ones: "Ryan's Daughter" again presents a love triangle, the essential part of which is the woman; it induces an imbalance brought about by passion.

Rosy Rayn (played by Sarah Miles) is a romantic girl who is obsessed with dreams, such as her father calling her "princess".

Her first "prince" she finds, or thinks she has found, in the mature Charles Shaughnessy (the excellent Robert Mitchum), a widowed professor in the seaside town where the story takes place.

But their wedding will ultimately end in failure and the dull reality of living together will ruin their ideal hopes.

Unwilling to give up her spirited and romantic dreams, Rosie finds her ideal replacement in the young British officer Randolph Dorian (a deadpan Christopher Jones). An unstable man, physically and mentally damaged by the brutal war.

"Ryan's Daughter was nominated for 4 Academy Awards in 1971, including Best Leading Actress for Sarah Miles, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Costume Design.

Sarah Miles received the Best Actress award at the 1971 Golden Globe Awards for her performance in the film.

John Mills won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Ryan's Daughter".

The film also won recognition at other awards and festivals, such as the BAFTA Awards, where it received several nominations, including Best Film and Best Director.

"Ryan's Daughter" is a cinematic gem that, while it may not have been widely acknowledged at its time, exudes a narrative and visual mastery that is characteristic of David Lean. The director's ability to meld the landscape with the narrative is undoubtedly one of the film's strong points. Nature not only serves as a backdrop but becomes a character in itself, reflecting and amplifying the emotions of the protagonists.

The story, while centered on a love triangle, goes beyond a mere romantic drama, delving into themes of passion, disillusionment, and the constant search for meaning. The performances are impeccable, with Sarah Miles and Robert Mitchum delivering memorable portrayals.

It's a film that deserves to be rediscovered and appreciated by new generations, not just for its visual beauty but also for its deep emotional resonance.
