Supergirl Episode 3: ‘Far from the Tree’ Review

Could Supergirl ever produce a clumsier episode than this? Honestly, everything seemed forced –from the action to the fun references to the extremely unhappy Sanvers bridal shower. I just could not feel the emotions they were portraying at all. Plus, continuity issues, people? J’onn can’t teleport to Mars, but M’gann did during last season’s finale? Poor CGI, but I can forgive them for that –it is a TV show, after all. Worst of all was the woefully undecided character that was Maggie’s father.

Really, guys? First he’s a loving father full of remorse, the next second he’s an uncaring a**hole, and then he’s once again a timid Mexican in America. I mean, why come for a gay bridal shower fully pre-informed, show your love for your daughter by revealing you follow all her cases and still carry a picture of her in your wallet, only to quite literally in the blink of an eye, turn angrily disapproving and then storm out? Just doesn’t add up.

Following the same theme of disapproving fathers, J’onn meets his on Mars, long in captivity. Unfortunately, after many centuries held by white martians and of believing his entire race had been killed, he doesn’t believe him, claiming his son would never flee to Earth and abandon Mars. The one scene I did feel was J’onn’s first argument with the white martians –the emotional tension was so palpable! Unfortunately, its back to drab playacting and inconsistent characters after that. Even Supergirl goes out of character in cold-bloodedly vaporising the attacking White Martians, and smiling about it. Like, what?? At some point, I even began to wonder if that was M’gann, or some other White Martian in disguise. Did you enjoy this week’s episode? Were you touched by scenes? Let’s know in the comments!

Supergirl returns next week Monday 30th October with ‘The faithful’ on The CW.
