Supergirl Season 3 Episode 6: 'Midvale' Review

Review by @petermarie · 3191d · of Supergirl

A Blast From The Past

In what has been a very emotional season so far, 'Midvale' throws us back in the past, to the lives of the teenage Danvers sisters just after Kara lands on Earth.

With Alex a mess after breaking up her engagement to Maggie, Kara drives both of them down to their hometown of Midvale for a weekend of rest. However, Alex won't talk to either her or Eliza and spends the day drinking in their bedroom, only to lash out at Kara at bringing them here at a whim and without her full consent. Kara, also nursing pains about Mon-El also becomes angry and the sisters go to bed that night estranged.

Throwback to their teenage days. Like we've been told several times on the show, Alex hates Kara for intruding into their lives and changing everything. She blames her for it all, even the loss of their dad, a situation she definitely could not control, and insists she doesn't have a sister to everyone who would hear. At school, Kara has only one friend, Kenny, who like her, is unpopular and picked on by others. Kenny is a photographer. He builds a telescope that takes pictures of the stars and invites Kara to take a look at it in the woods at night, where we see that they both are attracted to each other. Kara goes home and faces a fiery inquiry from Alex. And when she wakes in the morning, Kenny is dead.

Enraged by the antics and continued mockery of the other students in the school, she begins an investigation of her own, first unveiling that Kenny knew about the school quaterback's involvement with drugs, then going back to the crime scene to check it out for herself. Alex meets her there, revealing that Kenny had actually been taking her on calculus lessons and was secretly her friend. Together they uncover his laptop which he had buried before being killed, and surmise that Kenny must have had a lot of secrets on it, but after being out in the rain, they can't access his pictures. Kara remembers Clark's friend Chloe who is supergood with computers and sends her the hard drive. When the first set of images return, they discover that he had a picture that showed one of their teachers Mr. Bernard having an affair with Alex's friend Josie. Although Josie claims vehemently that it was all consensual and that Samuel didn't kill Kenny, Alex and Kara are not convinced. Later that night, they are almost run down by a hit-and-run driver.

Eliza is enraged at Kara for using her abilities and at the two for playing dectectives, and subjects Kara to a talking to by an FBI agent who looks remarkably like her Kryptonian mother and makes her promise not to use her abilities any more. As the agent leaves, we discover this isn't an accident: the 'agent' is J'onn Jonzz, shapeshifted. Then Alex gets accousted by the local sheriff for the laptop and the last set of photos reveal that he had been dealing in drugs shipped in from Canada, and Kara has to abandon that promise and rush down to save Alex who, as she says, knew Kara would come for her.

The episode ends with the teenage sisters well bonded and even apart from the rest of the school, and when the adult sisters wake up the next day, they are better and closer than their lashing out the previous night. They leave Eliza feeling better about themselves and each other and ready to deal with their respective pains, and head back to National City and the D.E.O where J'onn has a case waiting.

This episode was fit to burst with emotions and was more successful in this regard than all the others. What did you think? Let's know in the coments!
