Supergirl Season 3 Episode 7: 'Wake Up' Review

Nothing is as it seems...

Both story arcs of this week's episode have exactly one thing in common --things end very differently from how they begin, leaving everyone involved deeply disappointed: Sam leaves to find answers to her emerging powers and the D.E.O. discovers Mon-El's ship with the Daxamite inside. Sind both arcs don't connect in any way, let's look at them separately.

Sam's Journey, and Reign's Awakening

Okay... it's confirmed. Supergirl is borrowing a lot from the Smallville-verse. Aftrr Sam discovers last week that she was shot and didn't even feel it, she embarks on a journey to get answers for what happening to her. Her first step, of course, is her adoptive mother, Patricia, who we learn has had a very estranged relationship with her daughter since she became pregnant with Ruby. When Sam questions her about her biological mother, it quickly becomes apparent she is hiding something about Sam's past --Sam wasn't adopted, she was found. In a fashion very much reminiscent of Clark and Jonathan on Smallville, her mother shows her her ship, hidden away in the storm cellar. Sorry... I meant barn. Hidden away in the barn. Sam is awed and thrilled. She's an alien with actual superpowers! With knowledge she had no idea she had, she operates the ship and retrieves a crystal, which leads her away on a even longer journey.

She ends up in the middle of nowhere, and suddenly, right in front of her, in another Smallville-esque scene, giant brown crystals begin to grow, shooting up straight from the ground and creating her very own Fortress of Sanctuary where she learns she is Kryptonian. Then in a shocking twist, the hologram tells her she will be a Worldkiller and deliverer of justice, and will forget her child and everything else to embark on her mission. Before Sam can do anything or try to refuse the mission, the fortress emits a strange sound that sends her struggling to her knees. When she arises, her eyes glow ominously red, and she says in Kryptonian : 'I have awoken'.

The Return of Mon-El

Meanwhile, in National City, the mysterious ship stuck in the rocks underneath the city is finally found. The D.E.O goes at once to investigate, and in a heartwarming moment, discovers Mon-El in it. Kara is shocked, but glad --after 7 months, her love has returned. But the circumstances are strange, and Winn and J'onn have questions. What is the ship? Whose is it? How has it been stuck for over 12,000 years? And how, how is Mon-El breathing when the atmosphere is still toxic with lead. However, Kara insists he is tired and should get some rest.

Immediately they leave, he sneaks out of the med bay and into the D.E.O's restricted weapons vault, knocking out two agents before Kara shows up and takes him down. Now she has questions. What happened? Why would he do that? Was he confused by the hypersleep? Or is the person in front of her not Mon-El at all? He assures her that it is him but refuses to explain further, only to later enlist Winn's help to escape. Before he can complete his mission in the ship thoigh, Kara finds them, and at last he tells the truth: He is actually from the future, had lived 7 years since he left Kara, and was just trying to power the ship and the life-support system of the other passengers, still in hypersleep. He succeeds and the pods are all restored to power. All but one.

Kara quickly helps break the pod and retrieve the person inside, a Saturnian named Imra. They take her back to the D.E.O. for emergency revival, and as she wakes, we get the biggest reveal of all --Imra is Mon-El's wife.
