Hello, Worldkiller!
This episode continues from where episode 7 left off, with the revelation of Mon El's relationship to his wife, Emra, and the awakenening of Reign in Samantha.
However, in doing this, it totally ignores the events of episode 8. This is my first issue with the episode --Supergirl as an Arrowverse show has never been integrated well into the crossovers and this yar that it is, it's only about that episode itself? Not cool, guys. At least a mention, just a mention, of the lessons Kara learnt on Earth-1 would have been nice.
Odette Annabelle, who plays Samantha Arias, aka Reign was just awesome. Her performance both as Sam and Reign brought both characters to live and made her the centre of the episode, which, as the title implies, was just what this episode was about. And it made us quite sad, and anxious concerning her future, knowing that sooner or later, she will have to clash with her best friend in what will be a fight to the death, and that gentle Sam is doing all these without even realising it. Kara's arc, on the other hand, seemed quite contrived. The focus on her not being over Mon-El was just too much, and her continuous rebuffing of everyone... really, guys? And the moment when Alex tells her to forget her humanity is just out of character for both of them. Yes, Alex might be scared of the alleged Worldkiller, but asking Kara to be cold even before Reign does anything other than murder a few gang members? Too soon. Even the teacher knowing so much about the days before Ra seemed forced, and didn't make complete sense.
Still, the episode had the needed effect with its quite terrifying ending --Reign, in her sinister black outfit and mask knocking Supergirl unconscious after a prolonged fight in which Kara was clearly at her best, and beating her so badly that she has to be 'incubated' by the D.E.O. How will she ever stop the Worldkiller if it is that much stronger than her? Perhaps this is where the Legion of Superheroes will come in. Mon El finally explain why they were found in 12000 year old rock --the ship had accidentally gone back in time through the same type of portal that had taken him forward, and they had put themselves in hypersleep to be awakened when the 31st century arrived. The ship is owned by a group of superheroes who call themselves the Legion, formed by Mon-El himself and modeled after principles he'd learnt from Kara during his year with her.
So many questions remain unanswered. Will we see the rest of the Legion on Supergirl? What will happen when they find out Reign is actually Sam? And will Ruby, sweet Ruby, survive the scourge? Guess we'll just have to wait until the Winter hiatus is over to find out!
