Hey, guys!
So, ‘Mixed Signals’ is, in my opinion, the most fun episode since Season 1 ended, despite Cisco’s continuous and unrelenting efforts otherwise. I mean, how funny can you be when you’ve seen visions of a close friend dying, right? Anyway, the episode was filled with so much noteworthy scenes and quotes I decided to do a whole separate review on them.

So here goes!
First, the Barry kitchen dance. Our hero is seriously flaunting his newfound freedom (and increased speed) in very creative ways, including dancing and cooking. In his briefs, no less. And using a spatula as a mic. And speaking of creative flaunting, Barry goes ahead to catch up on TV shows he’s missed watching them at 1000 times the usual speed. It was so funny when he remarks ‘Aw, Jon Snow died’, and a second later goes “Oh, he’s alive!” The jab might’ve been at the widely-acclaimed Game of Thrones, but it does mirror how no one stays dead in a comic book show like The Flash.
All the relationship drama made for a ton of fun opportunities. Cisco understands nothing of ladies apparently (although to be fair, most guys don’t!) but in this episode, we see just how far it goes when it’s revealed that the magazines he collected in high school were tech magazines and the entire Team Flash, including Barry the ultimate geek, looks at him like he just confessed to having just had a bad diagnosis. Like, were you EVER normal, dude?! And then Gypsy walks in on him admiring something in a magazine, but before she can flare up he’s checking up other girls, he shows her what it was: the July 2007 Motherboard of the month and she remarks ‘I kinda wish it was a girl’. Sorry, Cisco.
And Gypsy still goes on to give us one of the most favourable quotes of the episode. After Caitlin gives Cisco some feminine advice (Rule 1: ‘When a girl says she gets it, she doesn’t get it AT ALL’), he goes on to apologise to Gypsy, only for him to leave her standing all alone a second later to deal with a new discovery he’d made. Gypsy, being Gypsy, just smiled and said: “It’s like he doesn’t know he’s a dead man”. Perhaps we should have saved our ‘Sorry, Cisco’ for this point, because it absolutely seems like he’ll need it. Oh, and the continuous use of ‘Schmoopy’! Hilarious! Like, what does that even mean?! Meanwhile we won’t even mention the fact that Earth-19 celebrates a day called 1-1-1 day. Apparently, they never had a Saint Valentine, or even a Saint Nicholas for Santa Clause... but they do celebrate... wait for it... a Saint Shaquile O’Neal day. Guys!!!
More relationship drama in Barry and Iris (perhaps I should have made that Barry-and-Iris, as they continuously referenced) took them to a couples therapist who gave us some of our best discussion scenes ever. It was so funny watching Barry and Iris try to tell someone not in the know about their situation and struggle to find an excuse for everything while she inexorably took notes. The show also used the opportunity to ridicule itself a bit further, chronicling just how many people had been lost in a few short years, and letting us see, for a brief moment, just how absolutely ridiculous it is that our heroes haven’t collapsed from all the trauma. Oh, and don’t forget the swiftly changing relationships, like Iris being engaged to someone else (Eddie) previously. And he’s dead, too.
As an Arrowverse fan, one of my best parts in the episode was the magazine on the therapist’s table with the headline: ‘Mayor Queen is the Green Arrow’, and Barry’s reaction on seeing it. Now, I can’t wait for tomorrow’s episode of Arrow!
And speaking of Arrow, I can’t be the only one who noticed that the penthouse in Central City in the beginning of the episode is the same house Thea and Oliver lived in at Star City? Really, guys... we’ve got eyes, you know!
