The ring, my take (Eng/Esp)

Horror is a well-established genre in cinema, and today I’m bringing you a review of El Aro (The Ring) as part of the “Halloween Party” initiative proposed by @wiseagent. This movie presents a supernatural theme that sends chills down our spines and cuts deep into our souls. It was released in 2002, and the first time I saw it, I couldn’t sleep all night—I have to admit that Samara, the ghostly girl, lingered in my subconscious for quite a while.

Masterfully directed by Gore Verbinski, I was captivated by the cinematography and the terrifying sequences that unfold little by little. In this case, the credit goes to cinematographer Bojan Bazelli, whose selection of greenish and grayish tones created the perfect atmosphere to heighten the terror.

I don’t think it disappoints, given that it’s based on an adaptation—the film Ringu (1998), a Japanese work that I also enjoyed. It’s impossible to ignore that the original idea comes from Kōji Suzuki’s novel, and the film was a huge hit at the time because of its premise of spreading terror through a VHS tape.

In the American version, we meet journalist Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts), who decides to investigate after the mysterious death of her niece and her friends. The clues point to a VHS tape containing several disturbing images. It’s said that anyone who watches the short film will be doomed, though they’ll first receive a phone call warning them that they have only seven days left. Rachel tracks down the video and watches it; from that moment on, fear is evident in her eyes. Shortly afterward, she asks her ex-husband Noah (Martin Henderson) for help and makes a copy of the video for him. Together, they uncover the dark past of the girl Samara Morgan and set out to stop the curse, since their son has also watched the video.

I think the elements added to the 2002 film were well-chosen; they create an atmosphere of mystery that works very well. The sound of the TV with no signal, the fly buzzing around repeatedly, the horses, the centipedes, the terrifying drawings, the tree, the ring of sunlight, the floating chair. All the elements designed to evoke fear were arranged perfectly, including the hallucinations—this was a fantastic strategy that helps weave the story together. The director knows how to play with suspense and makes the most of it.

The casting is also top-notch: Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, Brian Cox, and Daveigh Chase (as Samara Morgan) make up a cast that is one of this version’s strengths—the Japanese version, after all, has the story but lacks the performances. Naomi Watts gave a great performance; she comes across as a desperate and (at times) unbalanced mother, but that doesn’t stop her from continuing to investigate and get to the bottom of the story. Henderson delivered a solid performance, while David Dorfman gave a stellar update—it was one of my favorites.

I must point out that another of the most fascinating elements of this film is its soundtrack, which was composed by Hans Zimmer. Each piece of music is inserted for a specific purpose and helps build tension, while also highlighting the natural sounds of both objects and animals. The constant murmurs that are introduced are unsettling; the film thus relies on a series of techniques that appeal to the senses, going beyond the visual realm to instill terror.

I really enjoyed this version of The Ring—so much so that I actually prefer it over the original. Admittedly, when I watched it for the first time, I was already familiar enough with horror films not to feel intimidated, but the psychological horror presented here took me to another level; The Ring was an evolution of the subgenre, and since I was left somewhat traumatized after watching it, I have to admit that it’s scary.

El terror es un género consolidado en el cine y hoy les traigo la reseña de El Aro (The Ring), para así continuar participando en la iniciativa "Halloween Party" propuesta por @wiseagent. Esta película nos presenta un tema sobrenatural que nos eriza la piel y es capaz de calar muy hondo en nuestro espíritu. Data del año 2002 y la primera vez que la vi no pude dormir en toda la noche, he de confesar que Samara, la niña espectro, se quedó en mi subconciente un buen rato.

Dirigida de forma magistral por Gore Verbinski, me cautivó la puesta en escena y las secuencias terroríficas que se van hilando poco a poco. En este caso quien se lleva los aplausos es el director de fotografía Bojan Bazelli porque la selección de tonos verdosos y grisáceos recrearon el ambiente perfecto para acentuar el terror.

Considero que no decepciona puesto que partió de una adaptación, el filme Ringu (1998), obra japonesa que también disfruté, no se puede obviar que la idea original pertenece a la novela de Kōji Suzuki y la película en su momento fue un boom por su premisa de propagar el terror a través de una cinta de VHS.

En la versión estadounidense nos encontramos con la periodista Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts), quien tras la misteriosa muerte de su sobrina y sus amigos decide investigar. Los indicios apuntan hacia un video que está en VHS, allí aparecen varias imágenes perturbadoras. Se presume que quien vea el cortometraje será sentenciado, aunque primero recibirá una llamada que le advertirá que solo le quedan siete días. Rachel da con el paradero del vídeo y lo ve, a partir de allí el miedo se logra observar en sus ojos. Poco después pide ayuda a su exmarido Noah (Martin Henderson) y le hace una copia del video. Juntos descubren el pasado oscuro de la niña Samara Morgan, se proponen detener la maldición pues el hijo de ambos también observó el video.

Estimo que los elementos que se añadieron en la película del 2002 fueron acertados, crean una atmósfera de misterio que funciona muy bien. El sonido del televisor sin señal, la mosca revoloteando de forma reiterativa, los caballos, los ciempiés, los dibujos aterradores, el árbol, el aro de luz solar, la silla flotando. Todos los elementos para transmitir sensaciones de miedo fueron dispuestos de la mejor manera, incluyendo las alucinaciones, esto fue una estrategia fantástica que permite hilar la historia. El director sabe jugar con el suspenso y lo explota de la mejor manera.

El casting también está a la altura, Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, Brian Cox y Daveigh Chase (como Samara Morgan) conforman un elenco que representa una de las fortalezas de esta versión, justamente la japonesa tiene la historia pero no las actuaciones. Naomi Watts se desempeñó muy bien, se nota como una madre desesperada y desequilibrada (por momentos), pero eso no la detiene para seguir investigando y llegar al fondo de la historia. Henderson cumplió con el compromiso en tanto David Dorfman realiza una actualización estelar, fue una de mis preferidas.

Debo destacar que otro de los elementos más fascinantes de esta cinta es su banda sonora, la cual fue compuesta por Hans Zimme. Cada pieza musical se inserta con un propósito y contribuye a crear tensión, así como también se resaltan los sonidos propios tanto de objetos como animales. Los contantes murmullos que se introducen resultan perturbadores, se recurre entonces a propiciar el terror a través de una serie de recursos que inciden en el ámbito sensorial, más allá del plano visual.

Disfruté mucho esta versión de El Aro, al punto de preferiría por encima de la original. Ciertamente, cuando la observé por vez primera ya tenía películas referentes del género de terror como para no sentirme intimidada, pero el terror psicológico propuesto acá me llevó a otro nivel, El Aro fue una evolucion del subgénero y al quedar un tanto traumatizada después que la observé debo aceptar que da miedo.
