Spider-Man Far From – Spoiler Free Movie Review

Review by @readingdanvers · 2591d · of Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spider-Man Far From Home Poster.jpg

Wow. Just wow. The marketing for this movie did not do it justice. Unlike what it appears, this is not a case of you saw the trailers, you saw the movie.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is once again directed by Jon Watts and stars Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio, Marisa Tomei as aunt May, Zendaya as MJ, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan (it is so great that he still continues this role), Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill.

Spider-Man: Far From Home follows Peter Parker's Spider-Man. Now an Avenger and a teenager who has been brought back into existence after 5 years of being not existing thanks to Thanos' snap. Now all he wants to do is go on a school trip to Europe and tell MJ how he feels about her. Just like the Spider-Man we know from previous incarnations, sometimes, he doesn't want to be Spider-Man.

That is certainly the case when the Elementals show up in the middle of his vacation and threaten to destroy Earth. He has a hard, and unsuccessful time fighting against them, but then Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio shows up to help and take some of the load off Spider-Man.

We already know that Tom Holland is Spider-Man. He is super fit, super chatty, and just has that adorable quirky quality to him that makes him a perfect Spider-Man. But just like Michael Keaton in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Jake Gyllenhaal is a different level sort of an actor. He wants that Oscar and everyone knows that he deserves it. Sure, this is not the movie that will get him that award, but it will bring him back to everyone's mind because he is fantastic. Just a little fan trivia fact, during the Sam Raimi trilogy when the original Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire, was injured, the studio considered brining Jake Gyllenhaal as a replacement. Because they do look so much alike. Now Jake Gyllenhaal has come full circle and joined the Spider-Man/Marvel universe. I want more of him in the MCU. Everyone did a great job in this movie but Jake Gyllenhaal and his role stole the show.

If you know the comics you are going to be less surprised by the turn the movie takes. But you will be surprised by how the movie takes that turn. I knew going in who Mysterio is. But when that big moment of reveal came, I was still shocked by the way it was portrayed.

This movie has a shock and awe factor. Sure, it is fun and entertaining. The action is brilliant. It is hard for the MCU to outdo themselves, but in one particular sequence, they totally outdid themselves. But this movie also takes risks. Big risks. This is not a maybe you should sit this one out movie. This movie ties into previous and future MCU movies in a critical way. If you won't watch it, and the mid and post credit scenes, you will not understand the MCU as it moves forward. This movie is crucial. Also, those mid and post credit scenes were so mind blowing and satisfying that the audience started clapping in my screening. So unlike iSpider-Man: Homecoming, you better stay all the way to the end.

This movie starts off as a regular Spider-Man movie, but by the end of the movie, it turns into a mind blowing must see. So you must see it in theaters or you'll be missing out. A lot.

I hope that Marvel, Kevin Feige, Sony and Amy Pascal can keep this cooperation for many years to come, because it is working out famously in my opinion.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is now playing in theaters around the world so go see it now. And ignore those ugly posters, they don't represent the movie.
