This movie is brilliant. Upgrade was directed and written by Leigh Whannell who then go to do The Invisible Man. It's a sci-fi thrill with some aspects of horror, but mostly a sci-fi thriller. This movie wasn't officially a hit, but it was so cheap to make that it became a relative hit. But make no mistake, this movie does not look cheap. There is not a single moment where you think that something is just a terrible green screen or cheap CGI. This movie looks gorgeous. And most importantly, it's a really good movie. Also, don’t watch the trailers for this movie, they don't show you what the movie is about.
Logan Marshall-Green plays Grey Trace. He live in a futuristic world in which almost every aspect of our lives in controlled by technology. Trace is an old fashioned car mechanic who likes to work with his hands and who is happily married to Asha. However, his life gets turned upside down when she gets killed and he becomes paralyzed after an accident which leads them to the wrong neighborhood. Trace is in fact now becomes quadriplegic. He becomes depressed by his new situation and the police has no real leads on the actual people in charge of the crime. Then, one of his reclusive friends offer him a solution. A special chip that will allow him to regain the complete control of his body. The downside of that is that the chip is a computer that talks to Trace. Together they go on the hunt to find who killed Asha.
This movie is so much more than that. But telling you anything more will ruin the fun of seeing it unravel in front of you for the first time. The plot has a lot of twists and turns and some aspects of it are really original. The ending left me open mouthed.
Logan Marshall-Green is a great actor and he carries this entire movie on his shoulders. His good with his emotional scenes and the action scenes which are brilliant. It's almost like a first person shooter computer game. Everyone else in this movie are just ok. But, no one else has any substantial role. This is a one man show.
If you didn't get a chance to see this movie you should totally check it out. It is now streaming on Netflix.
