Avengers Endgame is a estructural mess: a deep review (Part 1).

This is a post that I have wanted to do for a long time but I feel that to approach the whole film as I want I will have to divide it into more than one part, I hope you enjoy and understand that that is why I conclude this portion so abruptly.

For such a “mainstream” movie I must admit that my relationship with Avengers Endgame is quite strange, I have seen it an almost obsessive number of times and my feelings about it range from excitement to mild disappointment.

These constant visits have opened my eyes, they allow me to see its entire structure with another lens and observe defects that (at least for me) were not evident from the beginning.

Directed by the Russo brothers and released in 2019, Avengers Endgame is probably the biggest cinematic event since the closing of Harry Potter with Deathly Hallows Part 2, the reason? Not only is it a crossover of gigantic proportions, but it serves as a direct sequel to Infinity War (A film responsible for closing more than 10 years of story telling with one of the most surprising twists of modern blockbuster cinema).

The thing is that unlike Infinity War that does well despite all its risky decisions, Endgame suffers more as a result of its own approach.

Here I make a little disclaimer, even after having seen it so many times I still enjoy the tour and its climax is one of the most impressive things I have experienced in a movie theater, the flaws are beginning to become evident, yes, but they do not detract from it. to the general product.

It happens that in terms of structure it is not only quite disorganized, but considerably bends its characters with the purpose of producing exciting moments.

In other words: being effective on a sentimental level does not remove the flaws.

As many will already know, Infinity War concludes with the snap of Thanos, an act that gives him the “definitive” victory and closes the film with the desperate image of half of the living beings on earth (And the universe fading away), the structure of this film presents Thanos as the protagonist (not the hero) and builds around his surroundings, we see the obstacles he faces and how he finally fulfills his objectives.

Endgame takes this crushing victory as a starting point and after putting a couple of pieces together it finally brings victory to The Avengers, who finally reunite and locate Thanos, beheading him almost immediately.

This, from a narrative point of view is quite interesting, because it defies our expectations and makes it clear that the conflict during Endgame is not in the hands of Thanos but in the ability of our heroes to return everything to normal.

We take a jump of 5 years and here the problems begin to arise.

On the one hand, we know that the movie is not going to do without Thanos entirely and we need to bring him back, which also means undoing his character development and picking him up from the past, does it make sense? Yes, does it have the same emotional weight as the Thanos who lived through the events and Infinity War? Of course not.

The time jump is vital because it gives a sense of "ultimate damage" to Thanos' snap, solidifies the lives of the characters left alive in the present, and allows Tony to find unexpected peace in his new daughter.

The negative? We have a new status quo and the story of bending to break it: Ant-Man enters the quantum world.

When I learned that Scott Lang would play such an important role in Endgame I was excited, the post-credits scene of Ant-Man and The Wasp left us quite shocked so expectations were not exactly low.

Lang has in his hands the worst deux ex machina of the entire film, conveniently leaving the quantum world at the precise moment and finding the solution to time travel - a plot device that will give way to one of the most intricate sections of the film. movie - while it's easy to ignore the meaninglessness of his escape, we can't deny that his entry into Endgame is unorganic but helps move the plot forward.

At this point in the film we have all the cards on the table: Thanos has died, 5 years have passed and part of the avengers decided to continue with their lives and finally: Scott Lang opens the possibility of returning everything to normal.

This is the pitch of Avengers Endgame, the parameters on which the story stands, for better or for worse.

Estas constantes visitas me han abierto los ojos, me permiten ver toda su estructura con otra óptica y observar defectos que (Al menos para mi) no eran evidentes desde el principio.

Dirigida por los hermanos Russo y estrenada en el 2019, Avengers Endgame es probablemente el evento cinematográfico más grande desde el cierre de Harry Potter con Deathly Hallows Part 2, ¿La razón? No solo se trata de un crossover de proporciones gigantescas, sino que sirve como secuela directa a Infinity War (Una película encargada de cerrar más de 10 años de story telling con uno de Los giros más sorprendentes del cine blockbuster moderno).

La cosa es que a diferencia de Infinity War que sale bien parada a pesar de todas sus decisiones arriesgadas, Endgame sufre más como consecuencia de su propio planteamiento.

Aquí hago un pequeño disclaimer, incluso luego de haberla visto tantas veces sigo disfrutando el recorrido y su clímax es una de las cosas más impresionantes que he vivido en una sala de cine, las fallas empiezan a hacerse evidentes, si, pero no le quitan mérito al producto general.

Sucedes que en términos de estructura no solo es bastante desorganizada, sino que dobla considerablemente a sus personajes con el propósito de productor momentos emocionantes.

En otras palabras: el ser eficaz en el plano sentimental no le quita los fallos.

Como muchos ya sabrán Infinity War concluye con el chasquido de Thanos, un acto que le da la victoria “definitiva” y cierra el filma con la desesperante imagen de la mitad de los seres vivientes de la tierra (Y el universo desvaneciéndose), la estructura de esta película nos presenta a Thanos como el protagonista (Que no el héroe) y se construye a sus alrededores, vemos los obstáculos que enfrenta y como finalmente cumple sus objetivos.

Endgame toma esta aplastante victoria como punto de partida y luego de unir un par de piezas le brinda la victoria finalmente a Los Vengadores, quienes finalmente se reúnen y ubican a Thanos, decapitándolo casi de inmediato.

Esto, desde un punto de vista narrativo es bastante interesante, porque desafía nuestras expectativas y deja claro que el conflicto durante Endgame no está en manos de Thanos sino en la capacidad de nuestros héroes en regresar todo a la normalidad.

Damos un salto de 5 años y aquí los problemas empiezan a surgir.

Por un lado, sabemos que la película no va a prescindir enteramente de Thanos y necesitamos traerlo de regreso, lo cual supone también deshacer su carácter development y recogerlo del pasado, ¿Tiene lógica? Si, ¿Tiene el mismo peso emocional que el Thanos que vivió los eventos e Infinity War? Por supuesto que no.

El salto en el tiempo es vital porque le da una sensación de “daño definitivo” al chasquido de Thanos, solidifica las vidas de los personajes que quedaron vivos en el presente y permite que Tony encuentre una paz inesperada en su nueva hija.

¿Lo negativo? Tenemos un nuevo status quo y la historia de le doblarse para romperlo: Entra Ant-Man en el mundo cuántico.

Cuando supe que Scott Lang jugaría un rol tan importante en Endgame me emocioné, la escena post créditos de Ant-Man and The Wasp nos dejaba bastante impactado así que las expectativas no eran precisamente bajas.

Lang tiene en sus manos el peor deux ex machina de toda la película, al convenientemente salir del mundo cuántico en el momento preciso y encontrar la solución a los viajes en el tiempo - plot device que dará paso a una de las secciones más intrincadas de la película -, aunque es fácil ignorar lo carente de sentido de su escape, no podemos negar que su entrada a Endgame es poco orgánica pero ayuda a mover la trama hacia adelante.

En este punto de la película tenemos todas las cartas sobre la mesa: Thanos ha muerto, pasaron 5 años y parte de los vengadores decidieron seguir con sus vidas y finalmente: Scott Lang abre la posibilidad de regresar todo a la normalidad.

Este es el pitch de Avengers Endgame, los parámetros sobre los cuales la historia se mantiene, para bien o para mal.
