Better Call Saul - Season 6 Part I (2022) review: Sooo... Is it Better than Breaking Bad?

Although it is one of the best current series (at least in objective terms) Better Call Saul has always been a project that is difficult for me to watch, beyond the conversation that unfolded in its first season where the comparisons with Breaking Bad were unavoidable we must admit that it is an unexpectedly dense work, with a rhythm and general theme that is simply not for everyone.

However, every time I give it a try and decide to catch up with it, I am totally satisfied with what I am looking at: The pinnacle of modern television.

From the hand of Vince Gilligan, Better Call Saul not only had the difficult task of serving as a prequel to one of the most iconic series of this century, but also had to justify the need for its own existence.

The years passed and it was clear that this spin off had not only managed to exceed our expectations, but in return had shown us a sober product, not very accommodating and capable of sustaining itself in isolation.

This sixth and final season has decided to adhere to the fashion of being divided into two batches of episodes and with the first part of these fully released, I think it is pertinent to analyze whether the story of Jimmy, whom we will later meet as the ambitious and deceitful Saul Goodman It's still worth it, then, is it?

One of the most exciting aspects of seeing the passage of time in Better Call Saul lies in the level of confidence that its own creators progressively acquire in the rhythm and general style of the series, we are at a point where each character added The Breaking Bad extended universe that was created here draws us in as viewers, or failing that, earns our contempt.

Obviously, we have a series with two main plots that are developed separately but meet organically from time to time: The legal aspect that follows the misadventures of Jimmy and Kim and the criminal plot, where characters like Nacho Varga, Gustavo Fring or the Salamanca family in general. From a narrative point of view, this duality serves to make the shocking factor of the work, although a good portion of the public seems to be biased towards one or the other side of this plot spectrum.

I personally enjoy both of them, and see them as a way to demonstrate the level of versatility that Gilligan and his associates have when it comes to writing and directing.

Better Call Saul is a very neat series, the performances are great, the direction and photography are beautiful and there are experimental moments that are too much fun... Although sometimes things happen in it that we don't like, this doesn't mean that the final product is not one of the best works that exist today.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how it all plays out in a couple of weeks.

A pesar de que es una de las mejores series actuales (Al menos en términos objetivos) Better Call Saul siempre ha sido un proyecto que me cuesta ver, más allá de la conversación que se desplegó en su primera temporada en dónde las comparaciones con Breaking Bad eran inevitables debemos admitir que se trata de una obra inesperadamente densa, con un ritmo y una temática general que simplemente no es para todos.

No obstante, cada vez que le doy una oportunidad y decidido ponerme al día con ella, me siento totalmente satisfecho con lo que estoy observando: La cúspide de la televisión moderna.

De la mano de Vince Gilligan, Better Call Saul no solo tenía la difícil tarea de servir de precuela para una de las series más icónicas de este siglo, sino que aparte debía justificar la necesidad de su propia existencia.

Los años pasaron y era evidente que este spin off no solo había logrado superar nuestras expectativas, sino que a cambio nos había mostrado un producto sobrio, poco complaciente y capaz de sostenerse de manera aislada.

Está sexta y última temporada ha decidido adherirse a la moda de dividirse en dos tandas de episodios y con la primera parte de estas totalmente estrenada, creo que es pertinente analizar si la historia de Jimmy, a quien luego conoceremos como el ambicioso y embustero Saul Goodman sigue valiendo la pena, entonces, ¿Es así?

Uno de los aspectos más emocionantes de ver el paso del tiempo en Better Call Saul radica en el nivel de confianza que progresivamente van adquiriendo sus propios creadores en el ritmo y el estilo general de la serie, nos encontramos en un punto en dónde cada personaje añadido al universo extendido de Breaking Bad que se creó aquí nos atrae como espectadores, o en su defecto, se gana nuestro desprecio.

Evidentemente, tenemos una serie con dos argumentos principales que se desarrollan por separado pero se encuentran de vez en cuando de forma orgánica: El aspecto jurídico que sigue las desventuras de Jimmy y Kim y la trama criminalística, en dónde se desenvuelven personajes como Nacho Varga, Gustavo Fring o la familia Salamanca en general. Desde un punto de vista narrativo está dualidad sirve para realizar el factor impactante de la obra, aunque una buena porción del público pareciera estar parcializado hacia uno u otro lado de este espectro argumental.

Personalmente los disfruto ambos, y los veo como una forma de demostrar el nivel de versatilidad que tiene Gilligan y sus asociados cuando se trata de escribir y dirigir.

**Better Call Saul es una serie muy prolija, las actuaciones son estupendas, la dirección y la fotografía son hermosas y hay momentos experimentales que se disfrutan demasiado... Aunque a veces sucedan en ella cosas que no nos agradan, esto no quiere decir que el producto definitivo no sea una de las mejores obras que existen en la actualidad. **

Definitivamente estoy ansioso por ver cómo terminará todo en un par de semanas.
