Bo Burnham- Inside (2021) review: When art meets cringe.

For a while now I've wanted to tackle Inside by Bo Burnham, it's honestly one of those pieces of media that I know I'm going to be unable to enjoy but feel it's important to acknowledge, even though my style of humor has never aligned with what Burnham produced, His talent as a comedian, musician and performer in general is undeniable, also adding directing and writing to the list of his skills with the recently released Eight Grade.

Inside is a fairly intimate film that seeks to replicate in an hour and a half all the feelings involved in living through the toughest moments of the pandemic, presented from the perspective of a man locked up for months in his own living room. Although it appears to be a comedy special that plays with documentary elements, it is quite evident that it is a slightly more abstract work in which anyone can feel identified.

From a purely technical perspective Inside is a beautiful film, Burnham's immeasurable talent extends to absolutely every aspect of the work: His editing, his direction, his screenplay and almost every accompanying musical piece is a technical marvel. with a flawless rhythm and although we don't connect thematically with it, it provides us with entertainment and lots of emotions... but, is this enough?

Don't get me wrong, I think Inside is great but I feel like as an introspective look at the collateral damage of the pandemic it leaves a lot to be desired, constantly getting lost in its jokes and almost systematically repeating things we've heard hundreds of times in other places.

Songs like White Woman's Instagram or Jeff Bezos's song (which gained an absurd level of fame on the internet) start off being fun but drag on unnecessarily, repeating the same punch line again without any added value...

Other segments, songs and sketches are wonderful, the sexting song ends ups being an hilarious storytelling and the serious interludes where Burnham discusses his own evolution within the special are brilliant, it's a shame that the overall result can't maintain such a consistent quality.

Inside prefers self-flagellation, naively assuming that acknowledging our mistakes within the "privileged class" is enough to be a transgressor, attacks deep political correctness and our facility to burn time on the internet without being able to empathize with the other side of the situation, falling into the pretentious although they were probably not their intentions.

I absolutely respect Bo Burnham and despite its flaws Inside is still an impressive piece of work, just because my feelings don't align with what he's showing us doesn't mean that I'm unable to see its objective value, it's still a roller coaster of emotions and I totally recommend it.

Desde hace un tiempo he querido abordar Inside by Bo Burnham, honestamente es una de esas piezas de media que sé que soy incapaz de disfrutar pero que siento que es importante reconocer, aunque mi estilo de humor nunca se ha alineado con el que produce Burnham es innegable su talento como comediante, músico y un performer en general, sumando también a la lista de sus habilidades el dirigir y escribir con la recientemente estrenada Eight Grade.

Inside es un film bastante íntimo que busca replicar en una hora y media todos los sentimientos que implicaron vivir los momentos más duros de la pandemia, planteados desde la perspectiva de un hombre encerrado durante meses en su propia sala. Aunque aparenta ser un especial de comedia que juega con elementos de documental, es bastante evidente que se trata de una obra un poco más abstracta en dónde cualquiera puede sentirse identificado.

Desde una perspectiva puramente técnica Inside es una película hermosa, el talento inmesurable de Burnham se expande a absolutamente todos los aspectos de la obra: Su edición, su dirección, su guión y casi todas las piezas musicales que lo acompañan son una maravilla técnica, cuenta con un ritmo brutal y aunque no conectemos temáticamente con ella nos brinda entretenimiento yn emociones por montón... pero, ¿Esto es suficiente?

No me malinterpreten, me parece que Inside es estupenda pero siento que como un análisis introspectivo de los daños colaterales de la pandemia deja mucho que desear, perdiéndose constantemente en sus chistes y repitiendo casi sistemáticamente cosas que hemos escuchado en otros cientos de lugares.

Temas como a White Woman's Instagram o la canción de Jeff Bezos (Que adquirieron una fama absurda en internet) empiezan siendo divertidos pero se alargan innecesariamente, repitiendo la misma punch line otra vez sin ningún tipo de valor agregado...

Otros segmento, canciones y sketches son maravillosos, el tema del sexting termina siento un storytelling hilarante y los interludios en dónde Burnham analiza su propia evolución dentro del especial son brillantes, es una pena que todo el resultado general no pueda mantener una calidad tan consistente.

Inside prefere la autoflagelación, suponiendo con inocencia que reconocer nuestros errores dentro de la "clase privilegiada" es suficiente para ser transgresor, ataca la profunda corrección política y nuestra facilidad para quemar tiempo en internet sin ser capaz de empatizar con el otro lado de la situación, cayendo en lo pretencioso aunque probablemente no fuesen sus intención.

Respeto absolutamente a Bo Burnham y a pesar de sus defectos Inside sigue siendo una obra impresionante, que mis sentimientos no se alineen con lo que nos está mostrando no quiere decir que sea incapaz de ver su valor objetivo, sigue siendo una montaña rusa de emociones y la recomiendo totalmente.
