Contrasting ideas with @miguelogliastre - What if… The World Loses its mightiest heroes? (2021) review

After watching the most anticipated episode of the recent Marvel series exclusive for Disney Plus: What if...? I decided that it was a good time to force myself to watch the rest of the episodes, as my interest in this was not exactly abundant, I choose to continue with the next one that seemed more attractive to me after the Marvel Zombies adaptation that turned out to be (In my opinion) pretty mediocre.

I took advantage of these circumstances to invite my brother @miguelogliastre to this post, hoping to find in him a slightly more optimistic opinion than mine, considering that unlike me, he has taken the trouble to see Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki… and he didn't let Black Widow ruin his MCU experience perpetually.

This time we will evaluate the third episode of "What If":...The world lost it’s mightiest heroes? Directed by Bryan Andrews and A.C Bradley. My brother's review portion will remain unchanged, except for minor adjustments to help with the overall harmony of the post.

Just by the name of this chapter we can already get an idea of ​​where his plot would be going, however there are many things that I liked and others not so much but they still have to be mentioned.

I want to start with the good and remarkable of this chapter, one of the things that I liked the most was the use of scenes that we had already seen previously in the Marvel movies and although they are obviously slightly modified, it seemed a very interesting resource.

The chapter goes straight to the point, it does not use filler scenes or anything like that, they are clear that they have to give us a story with a good beginning, a good development and a worthy ending, this is not an easy task considering that it is a series where each chapter lasts approximately 25 minutes, however this episode does what it promises and I loved how it was carried out.

I also liked that they are giving themselves the freedom to release episodes a little darker or at least within the standards that Marvel has us accustomed to.

To end with the positive, obviously we must talk about the plot of the chapter, since only the name of the chapter is quite engaging, but when we see the first 5 minutes we are already wondering who is behind everything that is happening and they manage to maintain the suspense until the last minutes and personally I did not imagine who was going to be the villain of this chapter and I was quite surprised because in addition the arguments he gives to Fury have all the sense in the world, the final scene is the best of the chapter.

Now I want to dedicate this last paragraph to talk about how "bad" two things are. First, that the voices of some characters such as Iron Man and Black Widow do not have the voices of Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson, I do not know what the reason for this has been, but personally I would have liked to hear them more. voices that the MCU has accustomed us to. Second, I felt the humor of the episode quite weak, perhaps because I felt that it did not fit with the style of the chapter but in my opinion several jokes were more than enough.

My opinion:

What if… Zombies? was a disorganized episode that had difficulty generating an emotional impact on the viewer, but "What if ... The World Loses its Mightiest Heroes?" presents a whole new set of different inconveniences.

Preserving the brilliant animation style that I praised previously, the third episode of “What If” seems to start with a much more focused concept, but falls apart as time goes by, with a rather strange location in the timeline. From the MCU, almost surgically arranged to extract as much fan-service as possible, we find a simple show that satisfies no wish and (again) concludes extremely quickly.

I regret that stories of such caliber are relegated to an interesting but limited format for their own development, in this installment of What If we are told about an alternative world where the avengers (at least the original template with all 6 of them) were killed before they even formed.

This premise is extremely interesting on paper, there are scraps in the final product and it is always appreciated these attempts to provide stories with a darker and more tragic tone, far from the usual rhythm of the movies that Marvel regularly produces.

The thing is that it does not stop feeling like a pitch, an interesting premise that can generate many expectations that are impossible to fulfill within the 30 minutes that each chapter composes.

The anthological nature of "What If" makes us appreciate its easy digestion, but we can't stop regretting how disposable a good portion of this project feels.

Luego de ver el episodio más anticipado de la reciente serie de Marvel exclusiva para Disney Plus: What if…?, decidí que era un buen momento para forzarme a ver el resto de episodios, como mi interés al respecto no era precisamente abundante decidí continuar con el siguiente que me parecía más atractivo después de la adaptación de Marvel Zombies que resultó ser (Bajo mi opinion) bastante mediocre.

Aproveché estas circunstancias para invitar a mi hermano @miguelogliastre a este post, con la esperanza de encontrar en el una opinión ligeramente más optimista que la mía, considerando que a diferencia de mi si se ha tomado la molestia de ver Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki… y no dejó que Black Widow le arruinara el MCU perpetuamente.

En esta ocasión evaluaremos el tercer episodio de What If:…The world lost it’s mightiest heroes? Dirigido por Bryan Andrews y A.C Bradley. La porción de la reseña de mi hermano se mantendrá inalterada, salvo pequeños ajustes para ayudar con la armonía general del post.

Con solo escuchar el título de este episodio ya podemos ver por donde irán los tiros, sin embargo, quiero que tengan en cuenta que muchas cosas me gustaron y otras no tanto pero igual hay que mencionarlas.

Quiero empezar con lo bueno y destacable de este capítulo, una de las cosas que más me gusto fue el uso de escenas que ya habíamos visto anteriormente en las películas de Marvel y aunque obviamente están levemente modificadas me pareció un recurso bastante interesante.

El capítulo va directo al punto, no utiliza escenas de relleno ni nada por el estilo, tienen claro que tienen que darnos una historia con un buen inicio, un buen desarrollo y un final digno, esto no es una tarea fácil tomando en cuenta que es una serie donde cada capítulo dura aproximadamente 25 minutos, sin embargo este episodio cumple con lo que promete y me encanto como se llevo a cabo.

También me gusto que se están dando la libertad de sacar episodios un poco más oscuros o por lo menos dentro de los estándares que Marvel nos tiene acostumbrados.

Para terminar con lo positivo obviamente debemos hablar de la trama del capítulo, ya solo el nombre del capítulo es bastante enganchante, pero al ver los primeros 5 minutos ya nos estamos preguntando quién está detrás de todo lo que está sucediendo y logran mantener el suspenso hasta los últimos minutos y en lo personal no me imaginaba cuál iba a ser el villano de este capítulo y me sorprendió bastante porque además los argumentos que le da a Fury tiene todo el sentido del mundo, la escena final es lo mejor del capítulo.

Ahora quiero dedicar este último párrafo para hablar de lo “malo” que son dos cosas. Primero, que las voces de algunos personajes como los son Iron Man y Black Widow no tengan las voces de Robert Downey Jr y Scarlett Johansson, no se cual haya sido la razón de esto, pero a mi en lo personal me hubiese gustado más oír las voces que nos tiene acostumbrados el MCU. Segundo, sentí bastante flojo el humor del episodio, tal vez porque sentía que no encajaba con el estilo del capítulo pero en mi opinión varios chistes estuvieron de más.

Mi opinión:

Si What if… Zombies? era un episodio desorganizado al que se le dificultaba generar en el espectador un impacto emocional, “What if… The World Loses its Mightiest Heroes?” Presenta todo un set de inconvenientes distintos.

Conservando el brillante estilo de animación que ya alabé previamente, el tercer episodio de “What If” parece iniciar con un concepto mucho más enfocado, pero se desmorona a medida de que el tiempo va transcurriendo, con una ubicación bastante extraña en la línea de tiempo del MCU, casi quirúrgicamente organizada para extraer todo el fan-service posible, nos encontramos con un espectáculo simple que no satisface ningún deseo y (de nuevo) concluye extremadamente rápido.

Lamento que historias de tanto calibre queden relegadas a un formato interesante pero limitado para su propio desenvolvimiento, en esta entrega de What If se nos habla de un mundo alternativo en donde los vengadores (Al menos la plantilla original con los 6 de ellos) fueron asesinados antes de que si quiera llegaran a formarse.

Dicha premisa resulta extremadamente interesante en papel, existen retazos en el producto final y siempre es de agradecer estos intentos por brindarnos historias con un tono más oscuro y trágico, distante del ritmo habitual de las películas que produce Marvel regularmente.

La cosa es que no deja de sentirse como un pitch, una premisa interesante que puede generar muchas expectativas imposibles de cumplir dentro de los 30 minutos que compone cada capítulo.

La naturaleza antológica de What If hace que una vez más apreciemos su fácil digestión, pero no dejamos de lamentar lo desechable que se siente una buena porción de este proyecto.
