[ENG/ESP] Breaking Bad and Death Note: Parallels/Paralelismos.

I want to start this post by saying that both Breaking Bad and Death Note are very important pieces of media on a personal level, they came into my life at different times and showed me the benefits of story-telling in an unexpected way. For fun I would like to explain some of the parallels that I have found throughout these years in both works, this of course does not seek more than to expose my random thoughts on two works that are, after all, very different.

Quiero empezar diciendo que tanto Breaking Bad como Death Note son piezas importantisimas en un nivel personal, llegaron a mi vida en momentos distintos y me mostraron las bondades del story-telling de forma inesperada. Por pura diversión me gustaría explicar algunos de los paralelismos que he encontrado a lo largo de estos años en ambas obras, esto por supuesto no persigue más que exponer mis pensamientos aleatorios sobre dos obras que al fin y al cabo son muy distintas. One of the most obvious similarities has to do with how both series challenge the concept of a protagonist and how he is usually linked to a hero/morally correct character. They are built around villains, but it puts them in the main focus. Empathy is pursued not because they are good but because due to a question of structure as spectators we must take their side. In the case of Walter in Breaking Bad, this is achieved through a quick connection with Walt's personal problems, a sad life as an underpaid teacher that is not according to his knowledge, surrounded by students and relatives who see him as a joke.

Una de las similitudes más obvias tiene que ver como ambas series desafían el concepto de un protagonista y como suele estar vinculado a un heroe/personaje moralmente correcto. Se construyen al rededor de villanos, pero los pone en el foco principal. Se persigue la empatia no porque sean buenos sino porque por una cuestión de estructura como espectadores debemos tomar su lado. En el caso de Walter en Breaking Bad esto se logra por medio de una rápida conexión con los problemas personales de Walt, una triste vida como profesor subpagado que no es acorde a sus conocimientos, rodeado de alumnos y familiares que lo ven como un chiste.

With Light, empathy is achieved in a slightly more manipulative way, we are steeped in Light's ideals and how the end justifies the means - Ignoring whether the means itself is achievable -

Con Light la empatia se consigue de una forma un poco más manipuladora, se nos empapa en los ideales de Light y como el fin justifica los medios - Ignorando si el medio en si es conseguible -

This is the cornerstone of the dynamics of Death Note / Breaking Bad, although you can see that Light / Walter's behaviors are reprehensible, the series does not want you to despise them, it wants you to understand their actions, it is an interesting way of approaching how to tell a story.

Esta es la piedra angulas de la dinámica de Death Note/Breaking Bad, aunque puedas observar que las conductas de Light/Walter son reprochables la serie no busca que los desprecies, busca que entiendas sus acciones, es una forma interesante de aproximarse a como contar una historia.

On a thematic level, if you look at it with a magnifying glass, you can deduce that everything I mentioned above reveals the end of both series: The protagonist must die, why? Again, because it connects with the themes of both series. Imagen

En un nivel temático, si lo vez con lupa, puedes deducir que todo lo que he mencionado anteriormente te revela el final de ambas series: El protagonista debe morir, ¿Por qué? De nuevo, porque conecta con los temas de ambas series.

Breaking Bad is a series that in the pilot episode sets its rules extremely well, and the main rule is that Walt is eventually going to die. That predefines what the end will be for us to focus on the journey.

Breaking Bad es una serie que en el episodio piloto establece extremadamente bien sus reglas, y la regla principal es que Walt eventualmente va a morir. Eso predefine cual será el final para que nos enfoquemos en el viaje.

There are numerous critics who consider that the 5th season of Breaking Bad is unnecessary, and highlight Face-Off (The end of the fourth season) as what should have been the true closure of the series. From a plot point of view this makes all the sense in the world: Gustavo Fring was the only obstacle between Walter and everything else and they already left him out of the equation.

Existen numerosas criticas que consideran que la 5ta temporada de Breaking Bad es innecesaria, y resaltan a Face-Off (El final de la cuarta temporada) como lo que debió ser el verdadero cierre de la serie. Desde un punto de vista argumental esto tiene todo el sentido del mundo: Gustavo Fring era el único obstaculo entre Walter y todo lo demás y ya lo dejaron fuera de la ecuación.

The problem is that although this ending was satisfactory in terms of the plot outright, it is not consistent with the true themes of Breaking Bad ... Season 5 serves as an epilogue, a study into the reasons that led Walt to commit the horrible actions he committed, and a redemption arc for Jesse and the other indirect victims of his disaster.

El problema es que aunque este final fuese satisfactorio en terminos de trama pura y dura, no guarda coherencia con los verdaderos temas de Breaking Bad... La temporada 5 sirve como epilogo, un estudio sobre los motivos que llevaron a Walt a cometer las horribles acciones que cometió, y un arco de redención para Jesse y las otras victimas indirectas de su desastre.

The thing is, the same argument could be made about Death Note, Death Note was able to end with L's death, and again, from a purely argumentative point of view it makes sense: L is the only obstacle between Kira and the new world, and the rest of the series after his death loses its way until it ends.

La cosa es que el mismo argumento podría hacerse sobre Death Note, Death Note pudo terminar con la muerte de L, y de nuevo, desde un punto de vista puramente argumental tiene sentido: L es el único obstáculo entre Kira y el nuevo mundo, y el resto de la serie luego de su muerte pierde el rumbo hasta que termina.

But thematically: We need Light's death, according to his spiral into madness and his senseless desires to be a God.

Pero tematicamente: Necesitamos la muerte de Light, acorde a su espiral a la locura y sus deseos sin sentido de ser un Dios.

The epilogue narrates the events that occurred after the outcome of the final plot, thus we see the outcome of these villains-protagonists.

El epilogo narra los hechos producidos tras el desenlace de la trama final, así vemos el desenlace de estos villanos-protagonistas.
