First of all I want to mention that this post is totally inspired by a recent video by Nerdstalgic, an American YouTube channel where they analyze various topics related to pop culture, it develops this theme and I totally recommend it. I will use information from there and my own knowledge. At the end i will put links to everything.
Antes que nada quiero mencionar que este post está totalmente inspirado en un reciente video de Nerdstalgic, un canal estadounidense de Youtube en donde analizan diversos temas relacionados con la cultura pop, dicho video desarrolla este tema y lo recomiendo totalmente. Usaré información de allí y mis conocimientos propios. Al final pondré links de todo.
The Big Bang Theory is far from being my favorite series, but I have never stopped recognizing the impact it had on television, becoming one of the longest multi-camera sitcoms that have existed, although it is over and continues to garner fans throughout the world. The plot is quite simple, we follow Leonard, Sheldon and their friends, a small group of physicists and engineers quite prominent that feels a lot of passion for geek culture after Penny arrives in their lives, who moves to the other side of the building where they live. The Big Bang Theory shows us the development of their lives over time, the growth of their characters and how they face problems of daily life that for many others would not be a big deal.
The Big Bang Theory dista de ser mi serie favorita, pero nunca he dejado de reconocer el impacto que ha tenido en la televisión, llegando a ser una de las sitcom multi-cámara más largas que han existido, aunque ya terminó sigue cosechando fans a lo largo de todo el mundo. La trama es bastante sencilla, seguimos a Leonard, Sheldon y sus amigos, un pequeño grupos de fisicos e ingenieros bastante destacado que aparte siente un nivel de pasion grandisimo por la cultura geek a partir de que a sus vidas llega Penny, quien se muda al otro lado del edificio en donde viven. The Big Bang Theory nos muestra el desarrollo de sus vidas a lo largo del tiempo, el crecimiento de sus personajes y como enfrentan problemas de la vida cotidiana que para muchos otros no serian gran cosa.

The premise is quite simple and that is precisely why it works, each character works as a gear in the story that they want to tell us and whether you like it or not it is difficult to imagine it with another formula.
La premisa es bastante sencilla y por esto precisamente funciona, cada personaje funciona como un engranaje en la historia que nos quieren contar y te guste o no es difícil imaginarla con otra formula.
This is why I was surprised when I discovered that the original TBBT pilot (which was never aired) had quite a different style. Curiously, the pilot was totally financed by the creator of the series (Chuck Lorre) and was taken to a series of television networks that obviously rejected it, this is a rare practice since the pilots are usually financed by the networks themselves that then decide if they want to continue with the series or not.
Por esto mismo me sorprendió cuando descubrí que el piloto original de TBBT (que nunca fue emitido) tenia un estilo bastante distinto. Curiosamente, el piloto fue totalmente financiado por el creador de la serie (Chuck Lorre) y fue llevado a una serie de cadenas de television que obviamente o rechazaron, esta es una practica poco común ya que los pilotos suelen ser financiados por las propias networks que luego deciden si quieren continuar con la serie o no.
The Pilot/El piloto:
Here we have a series of differences that serve as a point of reference to understand why The Big Bang Theory worked and why this chapter did not.
Aquí tenemos una serie de diferencias que sirven como punto de referencia para entender por qué The Big Bang Theory funcionó y por qué este capitulo no lo hizo.
According to CBR, Sheldon showed himself as a socially inept character - something that is repeated in the series - but with a sexual appetite that made him almost unrecognizable. For Nerdstalgic this small change considerably affects the aura of the series, and he is absolutely right, in the version that we all know the dynamic between Sheldon and Leonard is sometimes tense but friendship dictates everything, we know that Leonard has a romantic/sexual interest for Penny but Sheldon does not enter the equation, otherwise, his relationship with Penny would have been almost indistinguishable from that between Leonard and Penny. Why it is important? Because there is the soul of the whole series, not in the only idea of Sheldon being a social inept, but in how he see value in Penny despite the fact that her intellectual capacities are clearly inferior to hers.
De acuerdo a CBR Sheldon se mostraba a si mismo como un personaje socialmente inepto - Cosa que se repite en la serie - pero con un apetito sexual que lo hacía casi irreconocible. Para Nerdstalgic este pequeño cambio afecta considerablemente el aura de la serie, y tiene toda la razón, en la versión que todos conocemos la dinámica entre Sheldon y Leonard es a veces tensa pero la amistad lo dicta todo, sabemos que Leonard tiene un interés romantico/sexual con Penny pero Sheldon no entra a la ecuación, caso contrario, la relación de este con Penny hubiese sido casi indistinguible de la que tiene Leonard con Penny. ¿Por qué es importante? Porque allí está el alma de toda la serie, no en la única idea de Sheldon siendo un inepto social, sino en como lograr ver valor en Penny a pesar de que sus capacidades intelectuales sean claramente inferiores a las de el.

And what about Penny in the original pilot? Well, this is the funny thing, Penny did not even exist in that episode, she was created later to see the bad reception that the original vision for the series had. I present to you Kate, Kate is a character that structurally occupies the same role as Penny (The Romantic Interest / Co-protagonist) but is presented as someone much less sweet, much more aggressive and manipulative ... Much more in line with an archaic vision of the toxic next-door girl. Played by Amanda Walsh, Kate proved to have 0 chemistry with the rest of the cast and the way she was written didn't help either.
Returning to my analysis of the previous paragraph, this is another change in the dynamics that simply ruins the experience of the viewers.
¿Y que hay de Penny en el piloto original? Bueno, esto es lo gracioso, Penny ni siquiera existia en ese capitulo, ella fue creada posteriormente al ver la mala recepción que tuvo la visión original para la serie. Les presento a Kate, Kate es un personaje que estructuralmente ocupa el mismo rol de Penny (El interés romántico/Co-protagonista) pero es presentada como alguien mucho menos dulce, mucho más agresiva y manipuladora... Mucho más en linea con una visión arcaica de la girl next-door toxica. Interpretada por Amanda Walsh, Kate demostró tener 0 química con el resto del cast y el como estaba escrita tampoco ayudó. Retomando mi análisis del parrafo anterior este es otro cambio de la dinámica que simplemente arruina la experiencia de los espectadores.
Penny as a character lives to contrast Leonard and Sheldon, but she must also have a point of charisma that allows us to empathize. Maybe it's a bit silly within the standards of the series but that's the funny thing, the affection that he progressively feels for the group of friends and Leonard specifically is believable, it works within the internal logic of the series and it always feels like something won, never forced.
Penny como personaje vive para hacerle de contraste a Leonard y a Sheldon, pero también debe tener un punto de carisma que nos permita empatizar. Quizá sea un poco tonta dentro de los estándares de la serie pero esa es la gracia, el afecto que progresivamente siente por el grupo de amigos y Leonard específicamente es creíble, funciona dentro de la lógica interna de la serie y siempre se siente como algo ganado, nunca forzado.

I repeat, The Big Bang Theory is far from being my favorite comedy, I prefer them with another style, but I feel that we are fortunate that despite all these problems, the pilot liked it enough so that Lorre and Prady were given another chance , and we received whether we like it or not one of the biggest series of today.
