Being totally honest with you guys, this post would originally be part of my now typical mensual rants against the Marvel Cinematic Universe, boosted considerably by the newly released trailer for Doctor Strange and The Multiverse of Madness and how it manages to generate hype while presenting everything it got me jaded with the MCU these last two years. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to see The Eternals for the first time, a film that since its announcement did not attract my attention in the least and seemed the perfect formula for disaster, at least within my terms.
It's funny, because not only did I manage to find in Eternals a pretty decent movie, but also the break from the MCU scheme that I had been waiting so eagerly for since Endgame was released.
Of course it's far from perfect, Chloé Zhao's film constantly faces plot inconsistencies and a pace that leaves much to be desired... but it makes up for it with a fairly fresh approach that knows how to break the monotony.
The Eternals is a fairly dense movie in terms of lore and with a very serious tone, in fact, it is probably one of the 5 most tonally consistent movies since the whole MCU started with Iron Man in 2008. The only drawback in this sense is that its excessive length manages to feel heavy but simultaneously insufficient to land several of its fascinating plot points (In fact, I feel that it is a story that could have benefited greatly from a serialized format).
Visually it is fantastic and although its CGI is irregular if we measure it in terms of realism we cannot deny that it knows how to deliver a show, the fights are skilfully made and the photography in the slower moments is also very well executed.
It stumbles when it tries to fit in with the rest of the MCU, but it's riddled with interesting characters, with gripping conflicts and narrative arcs that unfold surprisingly well even though we have such a plentiful staff, there's time for everyone: Thena, Ikaris, Sprite, Sersi , etc... without a doubt they constitute the most attractive part of the entire film and sustain its weakest moments. It contributes a lot to this aspect that they are all played by excellent actors, both the familiar faces and those more underground ones.
The Eternals is the perfect blockbuster and I can't help but observe with a bit of pain how the critics have found it lousy (especially when compared to films like No Way Home), for me it is the perfect example of the true potential of this interconnected universe: a platform to create stories across time and space that can play with different genres and scales of conflict.
It is incongruous from time to time, yes, we could spend hours complaining about how it makes no sense that they went unnoticed by other Marvel characters during all this time (If we consider that they have been around for the entire existence of the earth and their powers are far from to be easy to ignore)... for me all that is not as important as striving to tell a good story, a task that The Eternals successfully fulfills.
Siendo totalmente sincero con ustedes este post originalmente formaría parte de mis ahora típicas rants en contra del universo cinematográfico de Marvel, impulsada considerablemente por el recién estrenado trailer de Doctor Strange and The Multiverse of Madness y como logra generarme hype al mismo tiempo q presentatodo lo que me tiene hastiado en el MCU estos últimos dos años. Parecía la oportunidad perfecta para ver por primera vez The Eternals, un filme que desde su anuncio no llamaba mi atención en lo más mínimo y parecía la formula perfecta al desastre, al menos dentro de mis términos.
Es gracioso, porque no solo logré encontrar en Eternals una película bastante decente, sino el quiebre del esquema MCU que venía esperando con tantas ansias desde que se estrenó Endgame.
Por supuesto dista de ser perfecta, el filme de Chloé Zhao se enfrenta constantemente a las incongruencias argumentales y un ritmo que deja mucho que desear... pero lo compensa con un enfoque bastante fresco que sabe romper la monotonía.
The Eternals es una película bastante densa en términos de lore y con un tono muy serio, de hecho, probablemente sea una de las 5 películas más consistentes tonalmente desde que se le dió inicio a toda esta serie de películas con Iron Man en el 2008. La única pega en este sentido es que su excesiva duración logra sentirse pesada pero simultáneamente insuficiente para aterrizar varios de sus fascinantes plot points (De hecho, siento que es una historia que podría haberse visto muy beneficiada de un formato serializado).
Visualmente es fantástica y aunque su CGI es irregular si lo medimos en términos de realismo no podemos negar que sabe entregar un espectáculo, las luchas están hábilmente concluidas y los momentos más lentos también están muy bien ejecutados.
Se tambalea cuando trata de encajar con el resto del MCU, pero está plagada de personajes interesantes, con conflictos que atrapan y arcos narrativos que se desarrollan sorprendentemente bien aunque tengamos una plantilla tan abundante, existe tiempo para todos: Thena, Ikaris, Sprite, Sersi, etc... sin duda constituyen la parte más atractiva de todo el film y sostiene sus momentos más flojos. Con este aspecto contribuye demasiado que todos están interpretados por actores excelente, tanto las caras conocidas como aquellos más underground.
The Eternals es el blockbuster perfecto y no puedo evitar observar con un poco de dolor como a la crítica le ha parecido pésima (Especialmente si se compara con filmes como No Way Home), para mí es la muestra perfecta del verdadero potencial de este universo interconectado: una plataforma para crear historias a lo largo del tiempo y el espacio que sepan jugar con diversos géneros y escalas de conflicto.
Es incongruente de vez en cuando, si, podríamos pasar horas quejándonos de como no tiene sentido que pasaran desapercibidos por otros personajes de Marvel durante todo este tiempo (Si consideramos que tienen rondeando por ahí durante toda la existencia de la tierra y sus poderes distan de ser fáciles de ignorar)... para mí todo eso no es tan importante como esforzarse por contar una buena historia, una tarea que The Eternals cumple con éxito.
