As I explained to you in my previous post, I have decided to dedicate myself to watching all the Evil Dead movies, the cult horror franchise not only represented the starting point for a career as prolific as that of Sam Raimi, but also served as an inspiration for dozens and dozens of filmmakers who were obsessed with his ability to balance terror with excessive violence and an occasional pint of violence.
Although the original film (released in 1981) seemed to me an indisputable classic, it is undeniable that it had several rough edges, and although many of them added charm to the work and were a direct consequence of its low budget and the inexperience of the acclaimed director, The idea of a sequel that could leave these limitations behind was fascinating.
And it is that although a good portion of the events of the original film had to be redone for the sequel (apparently due to copyright conflicts with the film's distributors), ironically this redundancy allowed it to exist as a kind of reboot, despite advancing the story significantly after its first hour.
In this way, Evil Dead II retains only the characters of Ash and Annie, adding much more backstory to the necronomicon ex mortis, and breaking the ambiguity of the original ending, serving as a solid bridge between this sequel and the bizarre Army of the Darkness.
However, as with the 1981 film, the true value of Evil Dead II lies in its entertaining gore and horror sequences, where audiovisual violence is organically intermingled with slapstick and physical comedy.
Sam Raimi recognizes the virtues of his own format and elevates them to the maximum, giving us a show with an equally strong identity, but much more calculated and efficient.
Retaining a similar duration (1 hour and 25 minutes) Evil Dead II is a brilliant sequel, embracing the positive aspects of the franchise and giving us more of the same without falling into the boring.
Cómo les expliqué en mi post anterior he decidido dedicarme a ver todas las películas de Evil Dead, la franquicia de terror de culto no solo representó el punto de partida para una carrera tan prolija como la de Sam Raimi, sino que aparte sirvió como inspiración para decenas y decenas de cineastas que se encontraban obsesionadas con su habilidad para balancear el terror con la violencia excesiva y una que otra pinta de violencia.
Aunque la película original (estrenada en 1981) me pareció un clásico indiscutible, es innegable que contaba con varias asperezas, y si bien muchas de le añadían encantó a la obra y erqn una consecuencia directa de su bajo presupuesto y la inexperiencia del aclamado director, resultaba fascinante la idea de una secuela que pudiese dejar atrás estás limitaciones.
Y es que aunque una buena porción de los eventos de la película original se tuvieron que rehacer para la secuela (aparentemente por conflictos de copyright con los distribuidores del filme), irónicamente esta redundancia le permitió existir como una suerte de reboot, a pesar de avanzar la historia significamente luego de su primera hora.
De esta forma, Evil Dead II retiene únicamente los personajes de Ash y Annie, añadiéndole mucha más backstory al necronomicon ex mortis, y rompiendo la ambigüedad del final original, sirviendo como un puente sólido entre está secuela y la extraña Army of the Darkness.
No obstante, al igual que con la cinta de 1981, el verdadero valor de Evil Dead II yace en lo entretenido de sus secuencias de gore y horror, en dónde la violencia audiovisual se entremezcla orgánicamente con el slapstick y la comedia física.
Sam Raimi reconoce las virtudes de su propio formato y las eleva al máximo, brindándonos un espectáculo con una identidad igual de fuerte, pero mucho más calculado y eficiente.
Conservando una duración similar (1 hora y 25 minutos) Evil Dead II es una secuela brillante, que abraza los aspectos positivos de la franquicia y nos entrega más de lo mismo sin caer en lo aburrido.
