Fast Five (2011) review: Pure dumb-fun

Although it is undeniable that in terms of profitability the Fast and Furious saga works, it seems that critics and the general public cannot decide between hating it, and appreciating it for what it is: A silly but entertaining series of action films with cars and a strange but tender fixation on family ties.

I, of course, would be part of the second group.

My interest in this series started very early, in the first half of the 00s, at that time, F&F seemed much more interested in the culture of street racing and tuning, than in having blockbuster action in an exaggerated plan, the thing is that From the beginning the seeds of what would come later were already noticeable.

Then things evolved, and after a couple more installments we had Fast Five, which in my opinion stands as the perfect mix of everything that makes F&F a very funny movie series.

Over time, the appeal of the innovations that this installment had has faded, but by then it was quite interesting to bring together all the prominent characters of the story in an almost crossover plan (With Roman from F&F 2, Han from Tokyo Drift and Toretto from the first film) in a heist movie set in Rio de Janeiro.

This crossover, which can end up knowing little for those who don't care about the franchise, ends up being the engine that propels the entire film, with a series of fun dynamics that any true fan has been waiting for years. Of course, these same dynamics lend a rather strange tone to F&F - And the tapes that followed - but it's never more shocking than entertaining.

The motivations of each character have more or less sense, if you do not spend a lot of time thinking about them, and the robbery itself is very well armed, no matter how simplistic the argument of Fast and Furious, it cannot be denied that love for the practical special effects, mixed with subtle hints of CGI (present since its inception) were what raised the saga to another level.

Although the cars were progressively relegated to a secondary role, the moments that lend themselves to it are used to cheer up the fans of this world with one or another impressive vehicle. Personally, this change does not bother me or make me happy.

It is easy to get into a pedantic plan to find fault with a film that obviously has too much, but at the same time, it is important that we understand the intentions of a work, and judge it for it.

Fast and Furious has never claimed to be a dense study of human nature, it does not play complex philosophy or existential conflicts. It is an expensive sample of special effects, expensive actors and beautiful machines, which draw on their own nostalgia (being so long-lived) to move us, I do not judge those who expect more from it, I would rather they saw the cinema with a different perspective, a little more relaxed and willing to enjoy without thinking too much about the issue.

Aunque es innegable que en términos de rentabilidad la saga de Rápido y Furioso funciona, parece que la critica y el público general no pueden decidirse entre odiarla, y apreciarla como lo que es: Una tonta pero entretenida serie de películas de acción con coches y una extraña pero tierna fijación por los vínculos familiares.

Yo, por supuesto, vendría formando parte del segundo grupo.

Mi interés por esta serie empezó desde muy temprano, en la primera mitad de los 00s, en ese entonces, F&F parecía mucho más interesada en la cultura del street race y el tunning, que en tener acción blockbuster en plan exagerado, la cosa es que desde el principio ya se notaban las semillas de lo que vendría más adelante.

Entonces, la cosa fue evolucionando, y luego de un par de entregas más tuvimos Fast Five, la que a mi parecer se erige como la perfecta mezcla de todo lo que hace a F&F una serie de películas muy divertida.

Con el tiempo, el atractivo de las innovaciones que tenia esta entrega se ha ido desvaneciendo, pero para ese entonces era bastante interesante la juntar a todos los personajes prominentes de la historia en un plan casi crossover (Con Roman de F&F 2, Han de Tokio Drift y Toretto de la primera cinta) en una heist movie ambientada en Rio de Janeiro.

Esta crossover, que puede terminar sabiendo a poco para aquellos a os que no le importe la franquicia, termina siendo el motor que propulsa todo el filme, con una serie de dinámicas divertidas que cualquier verdadero fan llevaba años esperando. Por supuesto, estas mismas dinámicas brindan un tono bastante extraño a F&F - Y las cintas que vinieron después - pero nunca resulta mas chocante que entretenido.

Las motivaciones de cada personaje cuentan con más o menos sentido, si no gastas mucho tiempo pensando en ellas, y el atraco en si está muy bien armado, por más simplista que sea el argumendo de Rápido y Furioso no se puede negar que el amor por los efectos especiales prácticos, mezclados con sutiles toques de CGI (presentes desde sus inicios) fueron lo que elevaron la saga a otro nivel.

Si bien progresivamente los autos quedaron relegados a un papel secundario, se aprovechan los momentos que se prestan para ello para alegrar a los fans de este mundillo con uno que otro vehículo impresionante. A mi, en lo personal, este cambio ni me molesta ni me alegra mucho.

Es fácil ponerse en un plan pedante a buscarle fallas a una pelicula que evidentemente tiene demasiado, pero al mismo tiempo, es importante que entendamos las intenciones que tiene una obra, y la juzguemos por ella.

Fast and Furious nunca ha pretendido ser un denso estudio sobre la naturaleza humana, no juega a la compleja filosofía o a los conflictos existenciales. Es una costosa muestra de efectos especiales, actores costosos y maquinas bellísimas, que jalan de su propia nostalgia (al ser tan longeva) para conmovernos, no juzgo a quienes esperan más de ella, más me gustaría que vieran el cine con una óptica distinta, un poco más relajada y dispuestos a disfrutar sin darle muchas vueltas a la cuestión.
