Fear Street - Part 3: 1666 (2021) review: An inconsistent but fun closure.

I want to start this review by mentioning (Again) that this post is a direct sequel to those where I spoke briefly about Fear Street Part 1 and Part 2, although it is not entirely necessary to read them to understand the content of my writing, a considerable part of it it builds on things I said previously.

I also want to make it clear that being in the third part of a trilogy it is almost inevitable to approach them without spoiling, they are warned.

When I reviewed the first parts of Fear Street I was listening carefully to the comments I received here, those comments could not help but shape my perception of the trilogy as a series of entertaining films but without pretending to be much more, constantly dancing between funny moments and others quite mediocre.

There seems to be a consensus on which is the worst of the three: Fear Street - Part 3 (1666) and it is not exactly difficult to understand why, although it maintains the positive points of the previous films (A unique aesthetic presentation and elements of horror well implemented with characters that gain our empathy with relative ease) also suffers in terms of tone and narrative, managing to close loose ends with considerable difficulty.

If 1994 was built around the 90s nostalgia and 1978 towards the same with the 70s and the slasher genre, 1666 is much more limited in this regard, showing us an ancient era that lacks audiovisual incentives to hook so easily, it is not because is expressly boring but because there are elements to counterbalance.

The result in part 3 is a work that fluctuates in time and space of its own internal logic, without much interest in respecting the things that have been previously established, although there are no clear errors, there is a feeling that is difficult to ignore that the writers they were locked in a plot hole where any solution would be far-fetched.

Of course, everything improves in the second part of the film, which takes us back to 1994 and moves the main conflict forward.

The climax of Fear Street maintains the inconsistency that has characterized all of Part 3, but it also knows how to be satisfactory in terms of conflict, although the aggressive slasher force that we saw in the second part and a large portion of the first was left behind, we have an action-packed closing that reminds us more of a light adventure in the style of the recent Stranger Things and it is not that it feels bad.

1666 knows how to give us a satisfactory closure, takes his characters to interesting places and closes his arcs of argument even if he wobbles in the process.

I just want everyone to keep in mind that it is a fairly mediocre story, that it has the ability to entertain and does attractive things on a conceptual level, although it is far from having the necessary material to rise as a true work of art within its genre, which does not pretend to be either.

Quiero iniciar esta reseña mencionando (Otra vez) que este post es una secuela directa a aquellos en donde hablé brevemente sobre Fear Street Parte 1 y Parte 2, aunque no es enteramente necesario leerlos para entender el contenido de mi escrito, una parte considerable del mismo se construye sobre cosas que dije previamente.

También quiero dejar claro que estando en la tercera parte de una trilogía es casi inevitable abordarlas sin hacer spoiler, están advertidos.

Cuando reseñé las primeras partes de Fear Street estuve escuchando atentamente los comentarios que recibí aquí, dichos comentarios no pudieron evitar moldear la percepción que tengo de la trilogía como una serie de películas entretenidas pero sin pretensiones a ser mucho más, bailando constantemente entre momentos divertidos y otros bastante mediocres.

Parece haber un consenso sobre cuál es la peor de las tres: Fear Street - Part 3 (1666) y no es precisamente difícil entender el por qué, aunque mantiene los puntos positivos de las cintas previas (Una presentación estética única y elementos de terror bien implementados con personajes que se ganan nuestra empatía con relativa facilidad) también sufre en términos de tono y narrativa, logrando cerrar los cabos sueltos con bastante dificultad.

Si 1994 se construía alrededor de la nostalgia noventera y 1978 hacia lo mismo con los 70s y el género slasher, 1666 se encuentra muchísimo más limitada en este aspecto, mostrándonos una era antigua que carece de incentivos audiovisuales para enganchar con tanta facilidad, no es porque sea expresamente aburrida sino porque existen elementos para hacer contrapeso.

El resultado en part 3 es una obra que fluctúa en el tiempo y el espacio de su propia lógica interna, sin mucho interés por respetar las cosas que se han establecido previamente, aunque no existen errores claros hay una sensación difícil de ignorar de que los escritores se encerraron en un agujero argumental donde cualquier solución sería rebuscada.

Por supuesto, todo mejora en la segunda porción del film, que nos regresa a 1994 y mueve adelante el conflicto principal.

El clímax de Fear Street mantiene la inconsistencia que ha caracterizado a toda la Part 3, pero también sabe como ser satisfactoria en términos de conflicto, aunque la fuerza slasher tan agresiva que vimos en la segunda parte y una porción grande de la primera quedó atrás, tenemos un cierre lleno de una acción que nos recuerda más a una aventura ligera al estilo de la reciente Stranger Things y tampoco es que le siente mal.

1666 sabe darnos un cierre satisfactorio, lleva a sus personajes a lugares interesantes y cierra sus arcos arguméntales aunque se tambalee en el proceso.

Solo quiero que todos tengan en cuenta que se trata de una historia bastante mediocre, que tiene la capacidad de entretener y hace cosas atractivas a nivel conceptual, aunque dista de tener el material necesario para elevarse como una verdadera obra de arte dentro de su género, que tampoco pretende serlo.
