Free Guy (2021) review: a fun gaming-accurate experience.

It is quite curious how so many recent films (Ready Player One, Space Jam 2, The Emoji Movie and Wreck it Ralph Breaka the Internet, to name a few examples) have tried to replicate the internet experience to a greater or lesser extent, either by focusing on social networks, mobile applications, artificial intelligence or video games.

Even more curious is that all these works end up being little more than a container of Easter eggs, winks and references from the most subtle to the most obvious, to everything that represents current popular culture, mixing in it a bit of eighties nostalgia and nineties.

The funny thing is, of all these attempts, most of these films fail at what should be most important: delivering a genuinely fun experience.

Although Free Guy is a silly film that does not bother to delve into philosophical or existential aspects, it is undeniable that it knows how to entertain.

Directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Reynolds (who appears to have a considerable amount of creative control here), Free Guy is an action-tinged comedy that operates within an unoriginal premise but presented in a fresh and true to form. try to represent.

In summary and without spoilers, we have the story of "Guy" an NPC of a massively multiplayer online "Free City". Guy has a fairly routine life (which is presumably due to his programming) until, due to things in life, he begins to become aware that he is inside a video game.

Free Guy is an agile blockbuster that mixes CGI with live action to represent a gaming world from the perspective of its non-playable characters, inspired by titles such as Grand Theft Auto, Fortnite and PUBG, it organically mixes the virtual world with some segments of real life that will move the story forward.

The participation of various actors such as Joe Keery and the great Taika Waititi contributes a lot to making it a pleasant experience, while coexisting with several cameos from real personalities from the internet world such as Pokimane or Jacksepticeye.

Although it is a superficial film with several plot points that could be questioned (Especially by those who know about programming), her undeniable passion for gaming fills her with charisma, making this a very entertaining experience.

A well-measured rhythm, epic and decent music, as well as an impeccable technical display make this a fairly solid film, which does not seek to break the typical schemes of the narrative but knows how to deliver exactly what it offers.

Es bastante curioso como tantas películas tan recientes (Ready Player One, Space Jam 2, The Emoji Movie y Wreck it Ralph Breaka the Internet, por mencionar algunos ejemplos) han tratado de replicar en mayor o menor medida la internet experience, ya sea enfocándose en las redes sociales, las aplicaciones móviles, la inteligencia artificial o los videojuegos.

Más curioso aún es que todas estas obras terminan siendo poco más que un recipiente de Easter eggs, guiños y referencias desde lo más sutil hasta lo más obvio, a todo lo que represente la cultura popular actual, mezclando en ello un poco de nostalgia ochentera y noventera.

Lo curioso es que de todos estos intentos, la mayoría de estas películas fracasan en lo que debería ser más importante: entregar una experiencia genuinamente divertida.

Aunque Free Guy es una película tonta que no se toma la molestia de profundizar en aspectos filosóficos o existencialistas, es innegable que sabe divertir.

Free Guy es un blockbuster ágil que mezcla CGI con live action para representar un mundo de gaming desde la perspectiva de sus personajes no jugables, inspirado por títulos como Grand Theft Auto, Fortnite y PUBG, se mezcla de forma orgánica el mundo virtual con algunos segmentos de la vida real que moverán la historia hacia adelante.

Contribuye mucho a que sea una experiencia grata la participación de varios actorazos como Joe Keery y el gran Taika Waititi, mientras que coexisten con varios cameos de personalidades real del mundo de internet como Pokimane o Jacksepticeye.

Si bien se trata de una película superficial con varios plot points que podrían ser cuestionados (Especialmente por aquellos que sepan de programación), su innegable pasión por el gaming la llena de carisma, haciendo de esta una experiencia bastante entretenida.

Un ritmo bien medido, música épica y decente, así como un despliegue técnico impecable hacen de esta una película bastante sólida, que no busca romper los esquemas típicos de la narrativa pero que sabe brindar exactamente lo que ofrece.
