A few weeks ago I wrote a post in a very negative tone regarding the Friends reunion, planned as an exclusive HBO Max special to premiere together with the arrival of all the episodes of the original series on the platform.
This special would bring the entire cast together for the first time since the end of the series in 2007, and would include several special guests, as well as stories and behind-the-scenes footage.
I must admit that while Friends is far from my favorite series, it has always been easy for me to recognize its objective value as a brilliant piece of popular culture, a position that was hard-won by its display of quality. Not only this, but I got to follow a considerable number of episodes, I adored their characters and their ending moved me deeply.
I feel that for all these reasons I felt morally obliged, not only to see the special but to dissect the good and the bad that arose from it with the best possible optimism, opening my mind to a piece of entertainment from which perhaps I expected the impossible. when I made the post I told you about a while ago.
The format of the reunion or what could at least be assumed thanks to the trailers did not attract my attention, it felt not very intimate and full of not very substantial filling that would hinder an experience with great potential. Friends is not only a great series, but it is a reflection of the time in which it existed (The beginning of the 2000s) so it would have been great to try to adapt it to our current world, with all the changes it would entail, to bring out its comfort zone characters and everything else.
Anyway, although my complaints remain after having seen the special (James Corden unbearable, a couple of guests who, although they come to pay tribute, feel out of place and a lot of emphasis on boring inside jokes) it is also quite moving and clearly arises from a infinite love for the series.
There is no better synthesis of the quality of the entire product than its first 20 minutes, after an intimate and introspective dialogue from the 6 friends is interrupted with the rather burned-out nighttime talk show format that will cover most of its duration.
So the results are mixed, on the one hand it is quite poignant but on the other hand it feels quite unnecessary and obsessed with its own content, unable to throw at Friends anything other than a blind compliment.
The best moments of the special result when the cast is left to do its thing: Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courtney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer brilliantly narrate their experiences behind and in front of the cameras, their accelerated rise to the fame and all the consequences that came with it.
It's also great to have access to testimonials from the writers, directors, and all the people who were in charge of producing the series, understand from their point of view why they made certain decisions and generally become familiar with the entire creative process.
Although if we are honest it was not necessary to do so much alaraca with the special (it could well have been a video on YouTube) it is also a solid piece that demonstrates the love that the series generated over time and respects its original canon without the need to establish sequels that are unnecessary.
For this reason I decided that in the first place I was wrong, and curiously, Lisa Kudrow explains to us why in the closing moments of the special, I will leave that part for you.
Hace unas cuantas semanas escribí un post en un tono bastante negativo respecto a la reunión de Friends, planeado como un especial exclusivo de HBO Max a estrenarse junto a la llegada de todos los episodios de la serie original a la plataforma.
Dicho especial reuniría a todo el cast por primera vez desde el final de la serie en 2007, e incluiría varias invitados especiales, así como historias y footage detrás de escena.
Debo admitir que aunque Friends dista de ser mi serie favorita, siempre ha sido fácil para mi reconocer su valor objetivo como una brillante pieza de la cultura popular, un puesto que se ganó a pulso por su despliegue de calidad. No solo esto, sino que llegué a seguir una cantidad considerable de episodios, adoraba a sus personajes y su final me conmovió profundamente.
Siento que por todas estas razones me sentía moralmente obligado, no solo a ver el especial sino a diseccionar lo bueno y lo malo que surgiera de el con el mejor optimismo posible, abriendo mi mente a una pieza de entretenimiento de la que quizá esperaba lo imposible cuando hice el post del que les hablé hace rato.
El formato de la reunión o lo que al menos se podía suponer gracias a los trailers no me llamaba nada la atención, se sentía poco intimo y lleno de relleno poco sustancial que entorpecería una experiencia con mucho potencial. Friends no solo es una gran serie, sino que es un reflejo de la época en la que existió (El principio de los 2000) así que hubiese sido genial tratar de adaptarla a nuestro mundo actual, con todos los cambios que supondría, sacar a sus personajes de la zona de confort y todo lo demás.
En fin, aunque mis quejas se mantienen luego de haber visto el especial (James Corden insoportable, un par de invitados que aunque vienen a homenajear se sienten fuera de lugar y mucho enfasis en inside joke aburridas) también es bastante conmovedor y claramente surge de un amor infinito por la serie.
No existe mejor síntesis de la calidad de todo el producto que sus primeros 20 minutos, luego de que un dialogo intimo e introspectivo de parte de los 6 amigos se interrumpe con el bastante quemado formato de talk show nocturno que va a cubrir la mayoría de su duración.
Entonces los resultados son mixtos, por un lado es bastante conmovedor pero por otro lado se siente bastante innecesario y obsesionado con su propio contenido, incapaz de arrojar a Friends algo que no sea un cumplido ciego.
Los mejores momentos del especial resultan cuando se deja al cast hacer lo suyo: Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courtney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry y David Schwimmer narran de manera brillantes sus experiencias detrás y delante de las cámaras, su acelerado ascenso a la fama y todas las consecuencias que conllevó.
También es genial tener acceso a testimonios de los guionistas, directores, y toda la gente que se encargó de producir la serie, entender desde su punto de vista por qué tomaron ciertas decisiones y en general familiarizarse con todo el proceso creativo.
Aunque si nos sinceramos no era necesario hacer tanta alaraca con el especial (Bien pudo haber sido un video en Youtube) también es una pieza sólida que demuestra el amor que generó la serie a través del tiempo y respeta su canon original sin necesidad de establecer secuelas innecesarias.
Por esto mismo decidí que en primer lugar yo estaba equivocado, y curiosamente, Lisa Kudrow nos explica el por qué en los momentos del especial, yo esa parte si la dejaré para ustedes.
