I must admit that Friends is not my thing, not that it has anything wrong, but that it does not fit my taste. However, I also must admit that several of its chapters are works of art, pieces of very good comedy ... Throughout my life I have spent a good time watching this series and there was always an episode that for me was far above of the others, today I would like to explain why.
"The one with five steaks and an eggplant" the 5th episode of the second season is on the surface a typical friends story: They are planning how to celebrate Ross's birthday, the 6 friends discover that money is starting to be a problem in a half of the group.
Rachel, Phoebe and Joey consider that a plan of 62 dollars per person is too expensive, and everything ends up exploding after the dinner that Monica proposes to celebrate the promotion she received at the restaurant where she works. Rachel, Phoeby, and Joey order inexpensive things, soup, water, and salads, then, Ross ultimately decides that the ideal is to divide the bill evenly, hurting them.
It is not a chapter that is regularly put on the list of the best of the series, but I am fascinated by how it addresses a simple but quite common problem in any group of friends. The gap in the group's economic capabilities is approached with comedy but without leaving aside the realism of the matter, we have all been on both sides of the argument at some point in our lives: perhaps we went through a few difficult days financially and we cannot afford it so easily. maybe, on the other side, we are in a good moment and we ignore the difficulties that our friends are going through.
At the end of everything, friendship must prevail over everything, the key is in empathy and in understanding where others are.
Although it is an extremely simple plot, Friends shines when it must play with the dynamics of its characters, clash their personalities, affinities and clashes, not everything can be perfect in this life.
When Monica is fired from her job, all of her friends leave the argument behind and proceed to comfort her.
I like that eventually it is not a problem that is solved, there is a reality that cannot be ignored, but in this life there are more important things than having the economic capacity to pay for a good dinner in an expensive restaurant. You never want to go over the problem, you just change the focus and go to pure friendship, which is the soul of the series after all.

Debo admitir que Friends no es lo mío, no que tenga nada malo, sino que no encaja con mis gustos. No obstante, debo admitir que varios de sus capítulos son obras de arte, piezas de muy buena comedia... A lo largo de mi vida he dedicado un buen tiempo a ver esta serie y siempre hubo un episodio que para mi estaba muy por encima de los demás, hoy me gustaría explicar por qué.
"The one with five steaks and an eggplant" el 5to episodio de la segunda temporada es en la superficie una historia típica de friends: Cuando están planeando como celebrar el cumpleaños de Ross, los 6 amigos descubren que el dinero está empezando a ser un problema en el grupo.
Rachel, Phoebe y Joey consideran que un plan de 62 dolares por persona es demasiado costoso, y todo termina explotando luego de la cena que Monica propone para celebrar la promoción que recibió en el restaurante donde trabaja. Rachel, Phoeby y Joey ordenan cosas económicas, sopa, agua y ensaladas de acompañamiento a platos principales, y Ross al final decide que lo ideal es dividir la cuenta en partes iguales, perjudicándoles.
No es un capítulo que precisamente se encuentre en una lista de los mejores de la serie, para muchos pasó sin pena ni gloria, pero a mi me fascina como aborda un problema sencillo pero bastante común en cualquier grupo de amigos. La brecha en las capacidades económicas del grupo se aborda con comedia pero sin dejar de lado el realismo del asunto, todos hemos estado en ambos bandos en algún momento de nuestras vidas: quizá pasamos por unos días difíciles economicamente y no podemos costear con tanta facilidad lo que nuestros amigos si, o todo o contrario, estamos en un buen momento e ignoramos las dificultades que viven nuestros compañeros.
Al final de todo la amistad debe primar sobre todo, la clave esta en la empatia y en entender en que posición se encuentran los demás.
Aunque es una trama extremadamente sencilla Friends se luce cuando debe jugar con las dinámicas de sus personajes, chocar sus personalidades, afinidades y choques, no todo puede ser perfecto en este vida.
Cuando Monica es despedida todos sus amigos dejan atrás la discusión y proceden a consolarla.
Me gusta que eventualmente no es un problema que se solucione, hay una realidad que no puede ser ignorada, pero en esta vida existen cosas más importantes que tener capacidad económica para pagar una buena cena en un restaurante costoso. Nunca se busca pasar por encima del problema, simplemente se cambia el enfoque y se dirige a la amistad pura, que al fin y al cabo es el alma de la serie.
