Good Boys (2019) review: The new Superbad.

For me it is quite curious to observe how comedy is usually a genre that many look down on when it comes to finding valuable lessons in it, especially when it comes to sour films that play with vulgar elements to boost their own humor.

Unfortunately, in this logical process we stop appreciating films that have a lot of thematic value and I feel that we should make an active effort to appreciate them.

Although the comparisons are odious to many, Good Boys is a film that in these respects reminds me a lot of another classic from the early 2000s: Superbad. Not because they are both drenched in suggestive nasties and jokes, but because they have an impressive ability to perfectly portray what it means to be young.

If in Superbad we found ourselves in front of a trio of iconic teenagers in a coming of age movie, eager to grow up without thinking too much about the consequences of it, Good Boys goes a couple of years back and takes us to the center of childhood , a sweet and sour trip in almost equal amounts.

Directed by Gene Stupnitsky and starring Jacob Tremblay, Keith L, Williams and Brady Noon, Good Boys is a stark portrait of youth, where we follow the story of 3 boys who skip school and go on a wild adventure. This simple premise serves as a vehicle to create a story where their friendship is constantly tested and between jokes we are made to reflect on growing up and suddenly feeling alien to a social group.

Although the humorous factor of the film is well executed and the performances of the boys are quite correct, the true jewel of the film is their courage to maturely accept the idea of ​​growing up being incompatible with the people we appreciate, forging our personalities to the painful detriment of those around us.

Without bothering to indulge in excessive drama, the ideas featured in Good Boys feel incredibly familiar, it's easy to relate to those dilemmas that we all likely face at some point in our lives.

Feeling problems of minimal magnitude like something of life or death, living between innocent lies to be noticed and totally reject those customs that we consider childish ... Good Boys has time to cover all this, in a package full of many sour jokes we find an exciting and simple film that knows how far to spread a gag without exhausting it.

Ironically, it may not be the best for the smallest of the house, but it lets us see in retrospect a moment in our lives that has already passed, full of triumphs and defeats.

Para mi es bastante curioso observar como la comedia suele ser un género que muchos miran por debajo del hombro cuando se trata de encontrar en ella lecciones valiosas, especialmente cuando se trata de películas agrias que juegan con elementos vulgares para impulsar su propio humor.

Lastimosamente, en este proceso lógico dejamos de apreciar cintas que tienen muchísimo valor temático y siento que deberíamos hacer un esfuerzo activo por apreciarlas.

Aunque las comparaciones son odiosas para muchos, Good Boys es una película que en dichos aspectos me recuerda mucho a otro clásico de principios del 2000: Superbad. No porque ambos se encuentren empapados en guarradas y chistes sugestivos, sino porque tienen una capacidad impresionante para retratar a la perfección lo que supone ser joven.

Si en Superbad nos encontrábamos frente a un trío de adolescentes icónicos en una coming of age movie, con afanes de crecer sin pensar demasiado en las consecuencias de ello, Good Boys se va un par de años más atrás y nos lleva al centro de la infancia, un viaje dulce y agrio en cantidades casi iguales.

Dirigida por Gene Stupnitsky y protagonizada por Jacob Tremblay, Keith L, Williams y Brady Noon, Good Boys es un retrato crudo a la juventud, en donde seguimos la historia de 3 chicos que faltan a la escuela y se lanzan a una aventura alocada. Esta simple premisa sirve como vehículo para crear una historia en donde su amistad se pone constantemente a prueba y entre broma y broma se nos hace reflexionar sobre el crecer y repentinamente sentirse ajeno a un grupo social.

Si bien el factor humorístico de la película está bien ejecutado y las actuaciones de los chicos son bastante correctas, la verdadera joya de la película es su valentía para aceptar con madurez la idea de crecer siendo incompatible con la gente que apreciamos, el forjar nuestras personalidades en doloroso detrimento de aquellos que nos rodean.

Sin tomarse la molestia de caer en el dramatismo excesivo, las ideas presentadas en Good Boys se sienten increíblemente familiares, es fácil identificarse con aquellos dilemas que probablemente todos enfrentamos en algún moment no de nuestras vidas.

El sentir problemas de magnitud mínima como algo de vida o muerte, el vivir entre mentiras inocentes para hacerse notar y rechazar totalmente aquellas costumbres que consideramos infantiles… Good Boys tiene tiempo para abarcar todo esto, en un paquete lleno de bastantes bromas agrias nos encontramos con una película emocionante y sencilla que sabe hasta que punto extender un gag sin agotarlo.

Irónicamente, quizá no sea la mejor para los más pequeños de la casa, pero nos deja ver en retrospectiva un momento de nuestras vidas que ya paso, plagado de triunfos y derrotas.
