How I Met Your Mother - The Finale (2014) review: The Game Of Thrones of Comedy.

Disclaimer: Of course, this post is littered with brief but meaty Spoilers about the ending of How I Met Your Mother.

When I think of sitcoms in a fairly traditional sense, it is almost impossible that How I Met Your Mother does not come to mind, the brilliant series created by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas managed to play defiantly with all the conventions of the format, to the time to break them to present something totally new.

The result was a 9-season project where a simple premise was extended considerably, leaving a host of wins and losses along the way.

Today, however, my intentions are not to evaluate the quality of its numerous episodes, but to present my thoughts on its ending, often considered one of the most controversial in the history of modern television.

For many, the complaints could be divided into substantive and structural, depending on whether it is the narrative aspects of the series or the way in which they decided to present them objectively. For me, although its conflicts and resolutions are far from perfect, my complaints have to do a little more with the latter: How i Meet Your Mother is a series that is desperate to finish and its own plot is bent to achieve it.

As if it were the Game Of Thrones of comedy, we are faced with several dozen plot points that enter without the intention of being organic and end with absurd speed. Is it a script flaw? In my opinion, not as long as its own duration, managing to offend the viewer who has invested years in front of the screen.

How I Met Your Mother moves in its final bars but the cost is too high, the refreshing tactics that in its first seasons made the rhythm of the series faster and gave it a different touch end up being a tool to speed things up, which does not mean that the story independently is wrong.

Everything was planned from the beginning: The mother must die and the eternal story of Ted to his children is nothing more than an emotional engine to transition Robin fully recognizing the importance that Tracy had in his life, it is a closure that connects beautifully With the beginning of the project and we would be lying if we dismissed it as inconsistent, the problem boils down to a matter of execution. The series evolved and its characters also, taking them to a context where returning them to that desired point was not going to be an easy task.

How I Met Your Mother is brilliant, it made me cry and despite its defects I find it difficult to deny it a place in my heart ... although none of this removes that it was a series too stupid to accept everything that had to be corrected, to reach new ones places while accepting what was meant to be its closure.

El resultado fue un proyecto de 9 temporadas en donde una premisa simple se extendió considerablemente, dejando un cúmulo de triunfos y derrotas en el camino.

Hoy, no obstante, mis intenciones no son las de evaluar la calidad de sus numerosos episodios, sino el exponer mis pensamientos sobre su final, considerado muchas veces como uno de los más controversiales en la historia de la televisión moderna.

Para muchos las quejas podrían dividirse en sustánciales y estructúrales, dependiendo de si se trata de los aspectos narrativos de la serie o de la forma en la que decidió presentarlos objetivamente. Para mi, si bien sus conflictos y resoluciones distan de ser perfectos, mis quejas tienen que ver un poco más con esto último: How i Meet Your Mother es una serie que se encuentra desesperada por terminarse y su propia trama se dobla para lograrlo.

Como si se tratase del Game Of Thrones de la comedia, nos encontramos ante varias decenas de plot points que entran sin intenciones de ser orgánicos y finalizan con una velocidad absurda, ¿Es un defecto del guion? A mi parecer no tanto como de su propia duración, logrando ofender al espectador que ha invertido años frente a la pantalla.

How I Met Your Mother conmueve en sus compases finales pero el costo es demasiado elevado, las tácticas refrescantes que en sus primeras temporadas agilizaban el ritmo de la serie y le daban un toque diferente terminan siendo una herramienta para acelerar las cosas, lo cual no significa que la historia de forma independiente esté mal.

Todo estaba planeado desde un principio: La madre debe morir y el eterno cuento de Ted a sus hijos no es más que un emotivo motor para transicionar a Robin reconociendo totalmente la importancia que tuvo Tracy en su vida, es un cierre que conecta de forma hermosa con los inicios del proyecto y mentiríamos si lo tachamos de inconsistente, el problema se reduce a un asunto de ejecución. La serie evolucionó y sus personajes también, llevándolos a un contexto en donde regresarlos a ese punto Tan deseado no iba a ser una tarea nada fácil.

How I Met Your Mother es brillante, me hizo llorar y a pesar de sus defectos me cuesta negarle un lugar en mi corazón… aunque nada de esto quita que fuese una serie demasiado necia como para aceptar todo lo que debía corregir, llegar a nuevos lugares al mismo tiempo en que aceptaba lo que estaba destinado a ser su cierre.
