I find it quite funny that my last post in this community was criticizing Netflix when the project that I am going to talk about next knows how to synthesize very well all the problems I was talking about back then, however, it is a series that within its Its own mediocrity also allows us to understand very easily why Netflix knows how to trap so many people.
“is it Cake?” It is a rather simple reality series that was born as an unnecessary extension to the internet meme where we were presented in a short video with an apparently “real” object that turned out to be a cake.
Is it Cake? It continues this premise from the two most obvious angles: on the one hand we have the opportunity to see very talented people creating hyper-realistic pastels and on the other hand we have the opportunity to judge together with them (The experts) when an object is pastel and when it is not.
When it comes to executing these two ideas Is It Cake? It is relatively successful, starting to have problems only when more is demanded of a reality show that is not willing to give us anything beyond its effective premise. Although it is entertaining to see it with family and friends considering its theme, the enjoyment will always arise from the ability of its contestants to do spectacular works, while their charisma (and their host) is totally null.
It doesn't help their case that the structure of the contest doesn't make it easy for us to empathize with any of the colorful contestants, focusing instead on throwing out graceless one-liners and featuring second-rate actors from the same platform (Netflix) for self-promotion.
Although it sounds like asking too much of a pastry program, this point of emotional connection can often make the difference between success and failure, this is something that other reality shows such as Master Chef have understood perfectly.
But what lesson does all this leave us with respect to the same Nature of Netflix? Well, despite its innumerable flaws, it is still a series that is enjoyed, although this enjoyment does not lie in the factors that we would like as viewers. It is short, it arrives quickly and it leaves in the same way, it does not seek to leave a mark but there are enough incentives to stay on the screen, not so much because it is a quality television program but because there is an indescribable morbidity in its own premise.
“is it Cake?”
Is it Cake?
