Last Night in Soho (2021) review: Wright in definitely on another level.

After having it on my watchlist for a couple of months, I had the opportunity to finally see "Last Night in Soho", a rather particular film that is not exactly lacking in reasons to attract viewers, with the imposing but pleasant presence of Anya Taylor-Joy hand in hand with the direction of Edgar Wright.

My first minutes in this elegant drama that played with supernatural elements were immersed around a constant thought: Last Night in Soho is a much more reserved film than what is expected from a filmmaker like Wright, although his seal of quality was present everywhere.

Of course, the film progressed and with each passing minute my statement became a little more incompatible with the true essence of the film.

In short, we could say that Last Night in Soho shows us the story of a young woman (Played by Thomasin Mckenzie, whom many will recognize from Jojo Rabbit) who decides to move to London to follow her dream of being a fashion designer, the point is that Eloise seems to have certain supernatural abilities that connect her to her mother who committed suicide when she was just a child.

For reasons that the film doesn't decide to explain in extremely detail (and I'm not complaining either) Eloise begins to suffer a series of hallucinations that seem to connect her with the life of Sandie, a beautiful girl who was trying to make a place for herself in the world show business of Soho in the 60s.

What may sound like a rather unfocused premise turns out to be a display of talent where Wright manages to organically include elements of horror and suspense in an aesthetically pleasing drama.

His common foibles are present here: Last Night in Soho is an exquisitely directed film, with impeccable editing and a recurring use of "classical" music that he knows how to exalt without overwhelming the experience.

Although after its first hour we could define it as a very entertaining thriller, this abundant surface value goes hand in hand with a surprising thematic density that decides to deal with machismo and how power dynamics between men and women are changing.

Last Night in Soho has it all, great characters, a solid plot and a couple of unexpected twists. A great film.

Luego de tenerla en mi watchlist durante un par de meses tuve la oportunidad de ver finalmente "Last Night in Soho", una película bastante particular que no carece precisamente de razones para atraer espectadores, contando con la imponente pero agradable presencia de Anya Taylor-Joy de la mano de la dirección de Edgar Wright.

Mis primeros minutos en este elegante drama que jugeteaba con elementos sobrenaturales estuvieron sumergidos en un pensamiento constante: Last Night in Soho es una película mucho más reservada de lo que se espera de un cineasta como Wright, aunque su sello de calidad estuviese presente por todos lados.

Por supuesto, el filme fue avanzando y con cada minuto que pasaba mi statement se quedaba cada vez un poco más incompatible con su verdadera esencia.

En términos resumidos podríamos decir que Last Night in Soho nos muestra la historia de una joven (Interpretada por Thomasin Mckenzie, quien muchos reconocerán por Jojo Rabbit) que decide mudarse a London para seguir su sueño de ser una diseñadora de moda, la cuestión es que Eloise parece tener ciertas habilidades sobrenaturales que la conectan con su madre que se suicidó cuando ella tan solo era una niña.

Por razones que el filme no decide explicar de forma extremadamente detalladas (Y tampoco me estoy quejando) Eloise empieza a sufrir una serie de alucinaciones que parecen conectarla con la vida de Sandie, una hermosa chica que estaba tratando de hacerse un lugar en el mundo del espectáculo de Soho en los años 60s.

Lo que puede sonar como una premisa bastante desenfocada termina convirtiendose en un despliegue de talento en dónde Wright logra incluir orgánicamente elementos de terror y suspenso en un drama estéticamente muy agradable.

Sus manías comunes se encuentran aquí presentes: Last Night in Soho es una película exquisitamente dirigida, con una edición impecable y un uso de la música "clásica" recurrente que sabe exaltar la experiencia sin llegar a abrumar.

Aunque luego de su primera hora la podríamos definir como un thriller muy entretenido, este abundante valor superficial va de la mano con una sorprendente densidad temática que decide lidiar con el machismo y el como van cambiando las dinámicas de poder entre los hombre y las mujeres.

Last Night in Soho lo tiene todo, grandes personajes, una trama sólida y un par de twist inesperados. Una gran película.
