Love and Monsters is a film with a fairly simple premise and through it conveys an effective message: What is the value of our human connections?
In the midst of a fairly imaginative post-apocalyptic future, with a dense and organic lore, we are told the story of Joel, who after this "Apocalypse" lost everything, with the remains of humanity confined in various bunkers throughout the world, Joel manages to contact by radio with the one who was the love of his life 7 years ago, finally giving him a reason to come to the surface to rediscover the only part of his "normal" life that is still alive.
Although Joel may start out feeling like a generic protagonist who could well have come out of any adolescent drama, as the footage goes by we learn to empathize with his, with his mixture of innocence and cowardice, which he must later leave behind.
With an aesthetic and narrative style that seems to take from works like The Last Of Us (The video game), Love and Monsters is incredibly well cared for from the technical point of view, and it always has something to offer us: characters with whom Joel can interact, or disastrous situations in which that will end up wrapped.
With hints of comedy that do not fall bad, the timing is quite decent and does not get to be boring. The apocalyptic creatures all have varied designs and the CGI in general is very well done.
If I had to mention something negative I would focus on the final resolution, not directly bad but predictable. There comes a point where we already know where things will go and the movie doesn't help itself by rushing everything a little more than necessary.
The trip is enjoying and gives us a couple of endearing characters, they are few and it allows us to form emotional ties very efficiently.
But what do I mean that the Love And Monsters message is about understanding the value of human connections? Again, beware of spoilers, the Apocalypse is not an event that is usually treated with optimism, especially because it involves a breakdown of society and of us as cogs of it.
I like that in this film those conceptions are broken, and they play with the idea of moving on even if everything is lost, that although our relatives are no longer there, there will always be space to form new valuable connections, even for different reasons.
Our rationality (characteristic that differentiates us from animals) is a window to solve problems, it shows us that the most direct and violent way is not the solution, it lets us understand if everything is lost, we can well use it as an excuse to sink into misery and do nothing to sue it, or we can use it as an impetus to get ahead, if we have nothing to lose, why not try?
For those who are looking for a too deep plot, they will not find it in Love and monsters, but it is undeniable that we are in front of a simple film that tells what it wants in an effective way, it has a heart and that is always admirable.

Love and Monsters es una película con una premisa bastante simple y por medio de ella traslada un mensaje efectivo: ¿Cual es el valor de nuestras las conexiones humanas?
En medio de un futuro post apocalíptico bastante imaginativo, con un lore denso y orgánico, se nos narra la historia de Joel, quien luego de este “Apocalipsis” lo perdió todo, con los restos de la humanidad recluidos en diversos bunkers a lo largo del mundo, Joel logra contactarse por radio con quien era el amor de su vida hace 7 años, dándole por fin una razón para subir a la superficie a reencontrarse con la única parte de su vida “normal” que sigue viva.
Aunque Joel pueda empezar sintiéndose como un protagonista genérico que bien podría haber salido de cualquier drama adolescente, con el paso del metraje aprendemos a empatizar con el, con su mezcla de inocencia y cobardía, que posteriormente deberá dejar atrás.
Con un estilo estético y narrativo que parece tomar de obras como The Last Of Us (El videojuego), Love and Monsters esta increíblemente cuidada desde lo técnico, y siempre tiene algo que ofrecernos: personajes con quien Joel puede interactuar, o situaciones desastrosas en las que terminará envuelto.
Con pizcas de comedia que no caen mal, el timing es bastante decente y no llega a aburrir. Las criaturas apocalípticas todas tienen diseños variados y el cgi en general está muy bien logrado.
Si tuviese que mencionar algo negativo me enfocaría en la resolución final, no por mala directamente sino por predecible. Llega un punto en donde ya sabemos a donde irá la cosa y la película no se ayuda apresurando todo un poco más de la cuenta.
El viaje se disfruta y nos regala un par de personajes entrañables, son pocos y nos deja formar lazos afectivos de forma muy eficiente.
Pero, ¿A que me refiero con que el mensaje de Love And Monsters va sobre comprender el valor de las conexiones humanas? De nuevo, cuidándome de spoilers, el Apocalipsis no es un evento que suela ser tratado con optimismo, especialmente porque supone una ruptura de la sociedad y de nosotros como engranajes de la misma.
Me gusta que en este filme esas concepciones se quiebran, y juegan con la idea del seguir adelante aunque todo esté perdido, de como aunque nuestros familiares ya no estén siempre habrá espacio para formar nuevas conexiones valiosas, aunque sea por motivos distintos.
Nuestra racionalidad (característica que nos diferencia de los animales) es una ventana para solucionar problemas, nos muestra que la vía más directa y violenta no es la solución, nos deja entender si todo está perdido, bien podemos usarlo como excusa para hundirnos en la miseria y no hacer nada por demandarlo, o bien podemos usarlo como un impulso para salir adelante, si no tenemos nada que perder, ¿Por qué no intentarlo?
Para aquellos que busquen una trama demasiado profunda no lo encontrarán en Love and monsters, pero es innegable que estamos frente a una cinta simple que cuenta lo que quiera de forma efectiva, tiene un corazón y eso siempre es admirable.
