Malignant (2021) review: Efficient...not perfect.

When it comes to film genres, there are few that are involved in as many peculiarities as terror and its derivatives, it is inevitable to lead to extensive discussions about when terror is "good" and the importance of a film's ability to scare as a factor.

For me, this factor is rather secondary ... I usually think that screaming and having altered nerves are a secondary course that does not affect my enjoyment for good or bad, this last position is supported by many great films that demonstrate the value of terror and horror to disturb our psyche in subtle but effective ways (I highlight the case of Midsommar and Hereditary) without going into typical effects.

I mention all of this because I feel that Malignant is an entertaining work but that he can't help but fluctuate in awkward ways between these visions, at times he focuses on the show and wants to be a classic slasher and at times he seeks a more artistic and psychological approach that honestly fits better.

James Wan is an excellent director and in Malignant he knows how to stand out, the elements of gore and the general visual presentation are quite attractive, they complement good performances and it is difficult to find flaws in the script, there are a couple of impressive sequences that alone make it's all worth it.

So what is the problem?

Here I will get a little nitpicky, although the plot is interesting, I feel that the way in which the information is delivered to us as viewers is not very organic, turning off any possibility of impact with each twist.

It is puzzling that paranormal elements coexist with those more settled in the real world, not because the combination is impossible (In fact, it is intelligent) but because the execution can leave much to be desired.

The hints of realism that are left throughout the film could be the basis for a much more interesting story but they come at moments where we as viewers have already lost ourselves in the absurd.

Without the intention of spoiling anything specific, my enjoyment was at its maximum when the "demonic" elements of Maligno were left in the back seat and the medical and psychological arguments that gave way to the whole conflict were given part.

While I don't want to invalidate the capacities of the paranormal and fanciful to disturb us, there is something about the groundedness of the final solution that reasoned much more with me.

Anyway, Malignant is a very well made horror film that with a couple of adjustments could be perfect, there are talented people behind it and has a passion that is not seen very regularly nowadays.

Cuando se trata de géneros de películas existen pocos que se encuentren envueltos en tantas particularidades como el terror y sus derivados, es inevitable desembocar extensas discusiones sobre cuándo el terror es “bueno” y la importancia de la habilidad de una película para asustar como un factor.

Para mi, dicho factor es más bien secundario… suelo pensar que los gritos y tener los nervios alterados son un plato secundario que no afecta mi disfrute ni para bien y ni para mal, esta última postura es apoyada por muchísimas grandes películas que demuestran el valor de el terror y el horror para perturbar nuestra psique de formas sutiles pero efectivas (destaco el caso de Midsommar y Hereditary) sin entrar en efectismos típicos.

Menciono todo esto porque siento que Maligno es una obra entretenida pero que no puede evitar fluctuar de formas incómodas entre estas visiones, a ratos se enfoca en el espectáculo y quiere ser un slasher clásico y a ratos busca un enfoque más artístico y psicológico que honestamente la sienta mucho mejor.

James Wan es un excelentísimo director y en Maligno sabe destacarse, los elementos de gore y la presentación visual general es bastante atractiva, le complementan buenas actuaciones y es difícil encontrar fallas en el guion, existen un par de secuencias impresionantes que por si solas hacen que todo valga la pena.

Entonces, ¿Cuál es el problema?

Aquí me pondré un poco nitpicky, si bien la trama es interesante siento que la forma en la que se nos entrega la información a nosotros como espectadores es poco orgánica, apagando cualquier posibilidad de impactar con cada twist.

Desconcierta que los elementos paranormales coexistan con aquellos más asentados en el mundo real, no porque la combinación sea imposible (De hecho, es inteligente) sino porque la ejecución puede dejar mucho que desear.

Las pizcas de realismo que se dejan a lo largo del film podrían ser la base para una historia mucho más interesante pero llegan en momentos donde nosotros como espectadores ya nos perdimos en lo absurdo.

Sin ánimos de spoilear nada concreto, mi disfrute estuvo al máximo cuando los elementos “demoniacos” de Maligno quedaron en el asiento de atrás y se le dio parte a los argumentos médicos y psicológicos que daban paso a todo el conflicto.

Si bien no quiero invalidar las capacidades de lo paranormal y fantasioso para perturbarnos, hay algo en lo grounded de la solución final que razonó mucho más conmigo.

En fin, Maligno es una película de horror muy bien hecha que con un par de ajustes pudo ser perfecta, hay gente talentosa detrás y una pasión que no se ve con mucha regularidad últimamente.
