I recently wrote a series of posts where I reviewed the Fear Street trilogy, the truth is that in recent years I have become quite obsessed with Halloween and I like to spend the month of October watching series and movies with this theme.
As Fear Street is a rather violent and "mature" movie series, I felt it would be interesting to continue my Halloween celebration with a lighter film, allowing me to reconnect with one of my childhood favorites: House of Mouse.
For those who do not know it, House Of Mouse is a Disney series that mixes several very interesting concepts with a unique setting: a nightclub where several Walt Disney characters meet to dine, interact and watch several animated shorts, both new and classics. All this having Mickey Mouse as the main host.
In November 2001 a direct-to-TV and DVD special was released, with a unique twist: Disney villains are trying to take the show out of the hands of Mickey and his friends.
Of course, this serves as a brilliant excuse to bring together several of Disney's most iconic evil characters: Hades, Jaffar, Captain Hook, Ursula, Cruella, Pedro, all of whom are gathered here in a display of fan service and nostalgia like few others.
While the narrative quality is nothing to write home about - The conflict is quite simple and its subsequent resolution the same - there is a nostalgic quality to House Of Villains That makes it the perfect comfort movie, organically mixing classic shorts like Lonesome Ghosts and Trick or Treat with more current gems such as Mickey's Mechanical House and Dance of The Goofys.
It is incredible how after so many years, the content of several of these animated shorts is still burned into my memories, from the ghostly Goofy trying to find a house to scare, to Mickey fighting against a modern house where there are robots that they do all his work for him.
House of Mouse is far from being a masterpiece but we cannot deny its quality as a collecting vessel for a lot of things that made the late 90s and early 2000s a great time.
Since I was a kid it was pretty easy to scare me, so while my friends were watching dense and gruesome works like Nightmare on Elm Street or Paranormal Activity, I was totally immersed in what I consider to be one of the most food-packed adventures of Mickey and his friends.
We associate Halloween with terror and horror in its strongest version, totally ignoring that it is a unique holiday, full of all an attractive visual language and many elements that can give rise to great stories, stories that we can all enjoy: from the greatest even the little ones.
