I have to admit that I have never been the biggest fan of M. Night Shyamalan, but over the years he has been able to produce some of the most interesting films I have ever seen, classics like Sixth Sense or Split hit quite deep in popular culture in a completely justified way, however, it is obvious that as a filmmaker he tends to fall for some tropes of dubious quality, such as the use of poorly implemented plot twist, disorganized direction and dialogues between his characters that leave much to be desired.
The case of "Old" is very particular because it has a premise that serves as the perfect ground to highlight all these problems, but at the same time, it has the potential to provide an experience that surpasses them and is genuinely engaging.
In Old we follow the story of a traditional family that in the middle of their vacations is invited to a paradise island, and, during their stay, they begin to notice that time behaves in it in a very different way, making the years go by in matter of minutes.
What does this mean? That children begin to age rapidly while the diseases of adults are rapidly enhanced.
In this way Old begins to be built as a suspense film, where we regularly observe the failed attempts of its protagonists to get out of this cryptic beach, as they struggle with the changes that their bodies and minds are undergoing.
Curiously, beyond the tension created by the supernatural properties of the island, the thematic focus of the film is found not so much in the struggle of its protagonists, but in how they try to internally face aging, challenges the concept of maturing and all the value of life
Obviously, Shyamalan's usual problems are not spared from existing in Old, and I have to admit that the first hour of the film is insufferable in terms of writing and most of the characters fail to connect with us. On the other hand, all these shortcomings fail to affect the overall experience, it is a solid movie with a simple message but ability to deliver it effectively.
Debo admitir que nunca he sido el mayor fanático de M. Night Shyamalan, pero a lo largo de los años ha sido capaz de producir varios de los films más interesantes que he visto en toda mi vida, clásicos como Sixth Sense o Split calaron bastante hondo en la cultural popular de forma totalmente justificada, no obstante, es obvio que como cineasta suele caer en algunos tropos de calidad dudosa, como el uso de plot twist mal implementados, una dirección desorganizada y diálogos entre sus personajes que dejan mucho que desear.
El caso de "Old" es muy particular porque cuenta con una premisa que sirve como terreno perfecto para resaltar todos estos problemas, pero al mismo tiempo, cuenta con potencial para brindar una experiencia que los supere y sea genuinamente atrapante.
En Old seguimos la historia de una familia tradicional que en medio de sus vacaciones es invitada a una isla paradisíaca, y, durante su estadía, empiezan a notar que el tiempo en ella se comporta de una manera muy distinta, haciendo que los años pasen en cuestión de minutos.
¿Que quiere decir esto? Que los niños empiezan a envejecer rápidamente mientras que las enfermedades de los adultos se realzan rápidamente.
De esta forma Old empieza a construirse como una cinta de suspenso, en dónde regularmente observamos los intentos fallidos de sus protagonistas por salir de esta criptica playa, a medida que luchan con los cambios que están sufriendo sus cuerpos y mentes.
Curiosamente, más allá de la tensión creada por las propiedades sobrenaturales de la isla, el foco temático del film se encuentra no tanto en la lucha de sus protagonistas, sino en como tratan de enfrentar internamente el envejecer, desafía el concepto de madurar y todo el valor de la vida.
Obviamente, los problemas usuales de Shyamalan no se libran de existir en Old, y debo admitir que la primera hora de la película es insufrible en términos de writing y la mayoría de los personajes no logran conectar con nosotros. Por otro lado, todas estas falencias no logran afectar la experiencia general, es una película sólida con un mensaje simple pero capacidad para transmitirlo de forma efectiva.
