Recently my interest in Formula 1 has increased considerably and although I am far from being a passionate fan, I find several of its aspects quite fascinating, not only because of the technical and visceral nature of this very elitist sport, but the culture that surrounds it and how it has evolved over the years.
When we are faced with a film that seeks to portray with relative fidelity a series of events that occurred in real life, it is totally logical that creative liberties be taken, these not only contribute to making the narrative of the events more digestible to the viewer, but also that are often imposed in order to reinforce the dramatic impact of what happened.
Those who know the rivalry between Nicky Lauda and James Hunt will understand that in the case of Rush it was not necessary to sugarcoat things too much, both emerged as Formula One drivers in the mid-seventies and represented two diametrically opposed philosophies of life, something that publicly created constant tension but in more cynical terms it served so that each of the pilots gave their best.
In this way, Rush takes his time to represent this, showing the obvious parallels between both icons, as well as the series of decisions that led Lauda to suffer a tragic accident in the middle of a competition in 1976 (from which he eventually recovered, even if he suffered serious scars from burns) or Hunt himself to die at just 45 years old, as a result of a life full of hedonism and excesses.
Despite how extremely bitter this premise may sound, Rush takes advantage of these disasters to narrate a much warmer story than expected, where the beautiful single-seaters are nothing more than a brilliant excuse to study the desires of overcoming of two human beings plaged be flaws and virtues.
The level of fidelity with real life will always be questionable, but we cannot complain, since each alteration exists in favor of telling an agile and entertaining story, which simultaneously serves as a good film and a history lesson that both lovers of the F1 as those who don't care much about the sport will appreciate.
Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl not only manage to perfectly mimic the physicality of Hunt and Lauda (respectively), but they manage to plunge us into a fascinating conflict with a relatively optimistic resolution.
Recientemente mi interés por la Fórmula 1 ha incrementado considerablemente y aunque disto de ser un fan apasionado, encuentro diversos de sus aspectos bastante fascinantes, no solo por la naturaleza técnica y visceral de este tan elitista deporte, sino la cultura que le rodea y como ha evolucionado a lo largo de los años.
Cuando nos encontramos frente a una película que busca retrarar con relativa fidelidad una serie de hechos que ocurrieron en la vida real es totalmente lógico que se tomen libertades creativas, estás no solo contribuyen a qué la narrativa de los eventos sean más digeribles al espectador, sino que muchas veces se imponen con la finalidad de reforzar el impacto dramático de lo sucedido.
Aquellos que conozcan la rivalidad entre Nicky Lauda y James Hunt entenderán que en el caso de Rush no era necesario endulzar demasiado las cosas, ambos surgieron como pilotos de la fórmula uno a mediados de los setenta y representaban dos filosofías de vida diametralmente opuestas, algo que públicamente creaba tension constante pero que en términos más cínicos servía para que cada uno de los pilotos diera lo mejor de si mismo.
De esta forma, Rush se toma su tiempo para representar esto, mostrando los obvios paralelismos entre ambos iconos, así como la serie de decisiones que llevaron a Lauda a sufrir un tragico accidente en medio de una competencia en 1976 (Del cuál eventualmente se recuperó, aunque sufriera graves cicatrizes por quemaduras) o al propio Hunt a fallecer con tan solo 45 años, como producto de una vida llena de hedonismo y excesos.
A pesar de lo extremadamente amarga que pueda sonar esta premisa, Rush aprovecha estos desastres para narrar una historia mucho más cálida de lo esperado, en dónde los hermosos monoplaza no son más que una brillante excusa para estudiar los deseos de superación de dos seres humanos plagados se defectos y virtudes.
El nivel de fidelidad con la vida real siempre será cuestionable, más no podemos quejarnos, puesto que cada alteración existe en pro de contar una historia ágil y entretenida, que sirve simultáneamente como un buen film y una lección de historia que tanto los amantes de la F1 como aquellos a los que no les importe mucho el deporte sabrán apreciar.
Chris Hemsworth y Daniel Brühl no solo logran mimicar a la perfección el aspecto físico de Hunt y Lauda (respectivamente), sino que logran sumergirnos en un conflicto fascinante con una resolución relativamente optimista.
