Silent Nights is one of the strangest "Christmas" movies I've seen recently, a feature that at least in my humble opinion not only gives it freshness, but also helps us understand that there are very curious ways of producing stories outside of everything. what we know in the mainstream sphere of modern cinema.
Presented at first as a typical Christmas story where a slightly dysfunctional family must share a dinner putting aside their differences, as the film progresses we will discover that things are a little more bitter than it seems, and really, we are observing the last days of life of this group and soon they will be stalked by a poisonous smoke.
In the world of Silent Nights, the apocalypse has been going on for a long time, and although the information regarding how it happened is scarce (and remains ambiguous), there is only one fact of which we are absolutely certain: All the characters we are seeing on screen are going to die after tonight.
Although we could dismiss this very premise as unnecessarily tragic and detrimental to the enjoyment of the film, the true appeal of the footage lies in its ability to build solid characters who look their own mortality in the face in painfully realistic ways.
Calling Silent Nights a comedy wouldn't be a crazy idea, but it's not because the director's aim is to make us laugh, but rather because there is something inherently funny about the tragedy that surrounds this "fictional world"... The main conflict? The governments of the world were in charge of manufacturing a magic pill capable of ending the life of those who consume it before the contaminated smoke poisons them in a painful way.
Each of the characters we follow in this film has a slightly different perspective on what is right, what about those people who, because they are homeless or illegal immigrants, did not receive this pill? Is it worth clinging to life if we are not going to have anyone around us? Can we put aside our selfishness and come together in the last moments of our lives? The world is unfair and we cannot do anything to change it.
Contributing to the film's emotional impact is an excellent cast, led by Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode and Roman Griffin Davis. Silent Nights manages to capture the typical Christmas warmth with a tragic addition that will leave us questioning our very existence. For a long time, it is very hard, yes, but at the same time entertaining.
