If you ask a Spiderman fan which is the best animated series with the character as the main character, they will most likely give you one of two answers: The 90s Animated Show... Or Spectacular Spider-Man. Although it is evident that on many occasions nostalgia speaks in favor of the first (And here I include myself as someone who grew up watching this show on Fox Kids), I have always been very curious about the second option, especially when we consider that the last decades have not been plagued with good series of the arachnid precisely.

For this very reason I decided to give it a chance, trying to understand from a more or less objective point of view why Spectacular Spider-Man tends to be adored by many.

For those who are not familiar with it, Spectacular Spider-Man is a 2008 animated series, logically inspired by the character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the 1960s. In summary, Spectacular was in charge of portraying the life of Peter Parker and his alter ego influenced by his humble beginnings in the comic, although in this adaptation several more contemporary elements of reference were taken, such as those that we could see in the ultimate comics, as well as the film trilogy created by Sam Raimi in the early 2000s. .

Unfortunately, the good reviews and positive reception from the general public did not help them much, since after two quite solid seasons the series was canceled as a result of various legal disputes between Sony, Disney and Marvel, this conflict ended up breaking any kind of storytelling potential that Spectacular had in the long term, but at the same time it served to cement the project as an incomplete masterpiece that was buried in the past.

When I first started watching Spectacular Spider-Man (which is available on Disney Plus, by the way) I felt it was important to understand all of this context in order to properly evaluate the series, as it's quite easy to jump to the conclusion that appreciation of its fans is not a consequence of its own quality, but rather of how painful its early cancellation was.

However, it is clear that Spectacular not only survives these prejudices, but that the passage of time has only solidified its humble virtues.

With only 26 chapters of approximately 20 minutes each, Spectacular Spider-Man is an in-depth approach to the entire myth of the iconic Marvel comics character, hitting the nail on the head with each of its substantial and visual elements.

The design of each character is unique and perfectly represents everything we need to know about their personalities, organically mixing their most childish and noisy aspects with the serious modernism that we would expect in a post-Raimi world, we have a structure that despite being Episodic knows how to move conflicts and narrative arcs throughout its two seasons, and time is used to the maximum to portray the evolution of Peter Parker and his superpowered alter ego.

The animation, which is rather simplistic, ends up being a playground to create action sequences where creativity is wasted, taking advantage of the skill set of each hero and villain, as well as the presence of New York, to provide a show worthy of a movie theater.

When unbridled action is not the main focus of the experience, characters are approached with maturity, serious issues are treated earnestly, and conflicts run their natural course.

Spectacular Spider-Man is not only an entertaining series that understands the character very well in all its facets, it is also a love letter to everything that surrounds his myth... in it we will see very well represented his love interests, his friends, allies, family and enemies, a definitive adaptation that every passionate fan should see.

O Spectacular Spider-Man.

I'm a total ignoramus in this field, you won't believe it, but I haven't seen any of the Spiderman animated productions. Only the live-action movies. Well, I only remember as a kid watching a Spiderman animated series, but I watched it sporadically, I didn't give much importance to this superhero, but I have read reviews of several Spiderman animated productions and they have been recommended to me.
